iamarobot··on AI tutoring with Khanmigo in a two-year school experiment
I think, IMHO, that AI is a growing problem in education, not because it gives answers to HW or tests, but because it stifles the creative thinking schools are supposed to preach(The HW and tests are more like a side hustle). We don't know the full impacts of AI, but from what I've seen, AI is kind of destroying our education system from the inside. Using AI, people just don't have a creative spark anymore, hw assignments that are submitted all look the same with GenAI prose, and with context, AI tutors just give answers to people without explaining the concept. On the flip side, the scores on tests in my schools are higher(Most of them just test basic memorizing), but the Homework scores are some of the lowest, creating a somewhat inverted diagram of scores.

A blog post is a fantastic idea :)

It's a mixture of both, really. On one hand we got Google Classroom and other study platforms pushing every AI Tutor they can towards us students. On the other hand, teachers(Some might be good, but it's a growing problem) frequently hand us assignments created with Claude and ChatGPT. The school then forbids us to use AI, but there's no way to police this anymore, and we gets points taken off if we don't sounds like GPT's perfect answer. I think the worst offenders, IMHO, are the publishers who force us to use AI, but teachers definitely have a fault in it themselves.

As a high schooler, the amount of AI forced down our throats is on another level. We have assignments with Claude Prose, tutors that hallucinate, and even gemini in the apps we use to access our assignments. Even my friend's brother(a 4th grader) uses AI to generate pictures for his slideshow about "Penguins". Education is definitely facing a turn, but is it for the worse?

Even currently, there are clearly diminishing returns throughout the field. While not a skeptic myself, I think the age of LLM's is now over or close to plateauing. GPT-6.1 Sol seems almost the same as GPT-6 Sol(even if the benchmarks are slightly better). It doesn't help that we are running out of real training data, requiring new Synthetic data to be created for the next generation of Models. AI(or SI), has hit its peak, IMO, and now the focus shifts directly to Autonomous tasks. While Fable 5.1 is borderline okay at autonomous tasks, the amount of Slop it generates fundamentally requires a human to correct its mistakes. I was working on a website for a nonprofit with Fable, but the amount of slop and corrections I had to make was astounding/

As a high schooler going to a school with stricter rules on AI than most in my area, I can say that it's been going downhill ever since GPT 4. Teachers constantly use AI to create assignments(my French Teacher regularly handed us work with GPT 5.1 prose and emojis). Students are also rampantly using AI and bypassing school restrictions(We have a google account, making it easy to use Gemini if we just sign out), causing an inflation in GPAs and test scores. There's no easy solution to the problem, banning AI-tools only help somewhat as even typing into Google has AI web results, and students are quickly overcoming ways to restrict them. I have a friend that vibe coded an application that allowed his Mac Mini's desktop to be mirrored on his school chromebook, bypassing every restriction with sub 1-second latency. Of course, that opens the can of worms to whether schools should allow students to use AI...

Hmmmm, I'm relatively new to FTC and robotics in general, but I'm kind of excited to see what happens. My team has heard rumors regarding that it will likely be a shooter game this year, which could make it relatively easier for the whole participation body.
