iamaelephant··on Ask HN: What are some examples of good database schema designs?
Counterpoint yes it is.
iamaelephant··on Mythical man month: 10 lines per developer day
This is just an ad for NDepend.
iamaelephant··on Scaling to 100k Users
Jesus. If you're having to split your application across multiple machines at just 1,000 users you are poked by the time you have to properly scale.
iamaelephant··on ‘We feel really terrible,’ says chief executive whose app roiled the Iowa caucus
> The problem was caused by a bug in the code that transmits results data into the state party’s data warehouse.

The amount of data we're talking about here would fit comfortably in an Excel spreadsheet. Why on Earth was there a data warehouse involved at all?

iamaelephant··on Nvidia Geforce Now launches at $5 a month
Most articles I can find put MacOS at 9-15%, about 5-8 times greater than Linux.
iamaelephant··on Tesla's self driving algorithm's overlay [video]
> One issue not discussed enough is all this push for automation really needs road marking guidelines pushed down from the Federal level

Yup especially because every country is USA.

iamaelephant··on Tesla's self driving algorithm's overlay [video]
So it operates under the conditions that we expect the commercially available product to operate under? Yeah cool thanks for the caveat.
iamaelephant··on Tesla's self driving algorithm's overlay [video]
Can you go out and buy a fully self driving Tesla today? Because that would be the relevant comparison.
iamaelephant··on Tesla's self driving algorithm's overlay [video]
"Just". Pro tip, these guys work on these problems all day every day. If you think you've solved one of their major problems after 18 seconds of consideration then you're probably missing a large amount of context.
iamaelephant··on On Computers: First Rule on Updating Software – Don’t
What the hell is this? This is not the calibre of content I expect from HN.
iamaelephant··on Building all of our new mobile apps using React Native
Building a chat app without notifications is a good way to get exactly zero users.
iamaelephant··on The 'Race to 5G' Is Lobbyist Nonsense
Please explain what this has to do with 5G. Be specific.
iamaelephant··on How much longer will we trust Google’s search results?
In this analogy the "cable customer" would be the ad purchaser. I don't know enough about that industry to know if the analogy works, but just saying.
iamaelephant··on Design Tips for Developers
> Pick a palette from flatuicolors.com

Wow those are some gaudy colour schemes that all look the same.

iamaelephant··on Stack Overflow is forming a moderator council
The first half of the article contains a huge amount of gloating about the size and reach of Stack Overflow. Then the second half of the article has gems like

> in order to continue to fuel our growth

Why does it have to be this way? SO is an immensely useful resource and a sustainable business. Why does every company need to continue to grow until they lose the essence of what made them good? Why can't companies be satisfied with making a decent chunk of change, paying their employees a fair wage and delivering value to their customer base?

iamaelephant··on LastPass stores passwords so securely, not even its users can access them
Ok man if it works for you then keep on keeping on. I have chosen to leave the service due to a huge drop in reliability and several major security and service incidents.
iamaelephant··on LastPass stores passwords so securely, not even its users can access them
> I'm not familiar with "theregister.co.uk"

Then you're not qualified to be discussing software or the tech industry, frankly.

iamaelephant··on LastPass stores passwords so securely, not even its users can access them
LastPass is riddled with problems, and the quality has dropped precipitously since their acquisition by LogMeIn. For a sampling of their problems I suggest searching this site for their name.

iamaelephant··on LastPass stores passwords so securely, not even its users can access them
One of the best things I've done in my personal software life recently is getting off LastPass. The only other piece of software I have seen decay in quality so rapidly and markedly is PocketCasts.
iamaelephant··on Dynamic type systems are not inherently more open
Best of luck with that.
iamaelephant··on Mozilla lays off 70
What's your point? That was already immediately clear from the comment, the tweet and the chart. So what's your angle?
iamaelephant··on New study: The advertising industry is systematically breaking EU law
That's comparing tracking advertising with bad data to tracking advertising with good data. Where's the comparison of tracking to non tracking advertising?

Tracking advertising costs the advertiser more (and makes the ad provider a lot more), but there's little evidence to suggest it's significantly more effective than content advertising. And this isn't even accounting for the enormous social cost of private surveillance.

iamaelephant··on The new Microsoft Edge is out of preview
None of the touch scrolling or gestures are as smooth as the old Edge, it's a real shame.
iamaelephant··on New study: The advertising industry is systematically breaking EU law
If you can't handle data reasonably then you can't handle data. I don't see why the company size is relevant.
iamaelephant··on New study: The advertising industry is systematically breaking EU law
All this invasion of privacy and still little evidence that user targeted advertising is substantially more effective than simple content based advertising.
iamaelephant··on Hipmunk Says Goodbye
> I don't mean for this to be a diatribe against regulations

I don't know how to tell you this, but it definitely is a diatribe against regulations.

iamaelephant··on Hipmunk Says Goodbye
Of course not, because it's absolutely ridiculous. The theory doesn't pass the basic smell test, it utterly defies common sense. I don't know if this user is a shill for some retailer or just extremely gullible, but this kind of absurd misinformation shouldn't be welcome on this website.
iamaelephant··on Building a more private web: A path towards making third party cookies obsolete
There's no reason to conflate "advertising" with "user-targeted advertising". There's nothing inherently privacy-breaking about advertising. A regular billboard doesn't track users, a print magazine ad doesn't track users and there's no reason internet advertisements absolutely need to track users.
iamaelephant··on Building a more private web: A path towards making third party cookies obsolete
> I am not saying they strike the right balance or not, but doesn't there have to be SOME balance?

No, absolutely not. User-targeted advertising does not need to exist, a priori. Plenty of empires were built on privacy-friendly content-targeted advertising in the past and there's no reason that can't be done now. Except that Google would make far less money.
