iamacyborg··on A 'bananas' order for 5000 obscure book titles fuels suspicion
I’ve not followed the market much but I suspect some fine press editions of Stephen King’s work would be up there. Of course, tons of standard paperback editions of those that could be pulped.

There are plenty of rare and precious books with ISBNs.

My guy, stop asking me to do all the legwork for you.
iamacyborg··on The software group Palantir paid just £2M in corporation tax in the UK in 2024
The problem is your content both looks and reads like low effort slop. Not that AI tools are here to stay.
iamacyborg··on The software group Palantir paid just £2M in corporation tax in the UK in 2024
Which might be true if the content weren’t also AI slop.
iamacyborg··on The software group Palantir paid just £2M in corporation tax in the UK in 2024
The content generally reads like Claude slop. Lots of self-narration, throat clearing sentences, overuse of verbs like “lands”, overuse of tidy sentence conclusions.

It’s all fixable with a modicum of effort but combined with the slop styling I’m not sure what you’re trying to achieve other than just pushing slop online.

iamacyborg··on The software group Palantir paid just £2M in corporation tax in the UK in 2024
If the website looks like slop, why would anyone believe the content in it to be anything but slop too?

Hard to look past the claude slop design
iamacyborg··on Unsubscribe from every newsletter, with no server and no database
Not sure what the point of this is when gmail has a subscription centre built in.
iamacyborg··on Zigbee vs. Matter over Thread:Understanding IoT Protocol Performance in Practice
My whole setup is, suboptimal, to put it delicately. It’s just running on a NUC that’s crammed inside my AV cabinet, antennas would be crammed in there as well. I mostly buy zigbee stuff but it’s hard to ignore how cheap the Ikea Matter over Thread kit is.
iamacyborg··on Zigbee vs. Matter over Thread:Understanding IoT Protocol Performance in Practice
My Matter over Thread stuff keeps occasionally falling over in Home Assistant and becoming unavailable, probably a router issue as I’m using a homepod mini but still endlessly frustrating.
iamacyborg··on The tax strategy used by the rich to pay 0% income tax
The principles for the strategy appear to be published in this paper https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/0015198X.2019.1...

You’re being polite, this stinks of Claude.
iamacyborg··on Handbook.md shows that long policy documents do not reliably govern agents
Hard to take this seriously when it has all the hallmarks and annoying tics indicating it has been written by Claude.
iamacyborg··on Document-borne AI worms can self-propagate through Copilot for Word
> And AI chatbots are very much targeted at the second group, not the first.

I suppose this is why the AI labs are famously not releasing developer-oriented tools.

iamacyborg··on Substack writers, you need a website
> It was never any better than Myspace, and gradually got much worse.

I might be misremembering a bunch but myspace never had a feed that showed you your friend’s updates.

It also wasn’t able to magically show you the people who were at that random house party you went to the night before that you hit it off with but were too drunk to get their number.

iamacyborg··on Show HN: Ex Situ – Open-source spatial index of displaced cultural artifacts
You might want to read Hamilton’s defence of Elgin to understand how they saw the difference between legitimate and illegitimate acquisition of antiquities.
iamacyborg··on Show HN: Ex Situ – Open-source spatial index of displaced cultural artifacts
I’m quite fortunate on the family history side of things. Not sure a chatbot is what’s needed but I’d be happy to make digitised files public that relate to things that are in the public interest. This ancestor for example was key in the acquisition of the rosetta stone and the parthenon marbles and was the recipient of one of Canova’s “Ideal Heads” that can now be seen at the Ashmolean in Cambridge. There’s a lot of history associated with those 3 events.
iamacyborg··on Jellyfin founder Andrew leaves team
They’re not “friends”, they’re people paying a small fee to conveniently access pirated media.

There are lots of folks self-hosting the music app Roon and paying for it.
iamacyborg··on Show HN: Ex Situ – Open-source spatial index of displaced cultural artifacts
They’re at my aunts house, I’ve just not had a chance to read them or ask my cousin to digitise them and send them to me.

One day I really should dig up my great great great great grandfather’s[^1] diaries to see first hand how he justified bringing back so much stuff to the UK.

iamacyborg··on The privacy problems hidden in your period tracker
> The real solution to this would be to give everyone and their dog a standardised online server with legally enforced privacy, and have sandboxed apps manage data in and out in a interexchangeable format, but I feel like I'm asking for peace on earth.

That sounds like Tim Berners-Lee’s Solid project.

I am aware, that’s why I don’t have one in my flat (and I don’t own a car for that matter so none there either) but they’re still a hell of a lot of fun.

Subwoofers are really fun though.
iamacyborg··on Societal Impacts: Claude's values across models and languages
Calling it a “fucking idiot” seems to do the trick
iamacyborg··on Societal Impacts: Claude's values across models and languages
I swore at it a few times and it did the same thing.

It seems to be getting distinctly dumber and pulling more and more irrelevant context from historical conversations.
