In one case it just also happens to be impossible to avoid being further monetized via ads and tracking.
This, to me, is unacceptable for paid software, as essentially amounts to license fee + adware model.
edit:
To make it clear to people not reading the comment carefully, I'm not saying MacOS is "free". I'm merely saying that once you pay for the computer, the OS is included in the price.
And there is no additional monetization under the form of ads or tracking. Unlike in the Windows world, where you pay for the license, yet you are still being tracked and served ads.
On Facebook. Literally. You can scrape any public profile info. It's against ToS, but it's not illegal (some caveats apply, see the hiQ Labs v. LinkedIn case for more info).
The only noteworthy thing is the phone number vuln. Except that's been known since 2019, so it's certainly not news.
Someone scraped some public profiles. Someone then brute forced a poorly implemented "look up by phone number" feature. They linked the two datasets on the unique facebook user id.
Leaking data that is or was in the public domain is not much of a leak. The only noteworthy thing would be the leak of the non-public phone number, however that vulnerability has been widely known since 2019 (and has been resolved by Facebook), so there's nothing new here?
They really want to burn them.
In contrast, YC wants 7% for $125k, and you get a few talks, some introductions and "office hours" meetings.
It's an apples to oranges comparison.
Even more so in recent years, since YC has essentially turned into a conveyor belt incubator (in my opinion).
I don't suggest trying it, as unlocking your account requires phone no. and email verification... yikes.
Well, in Germany, a software engineer making that much simply does not exist..
Germany - senior software engineer - 45k eur.
US - senior software engineer - 240k usd.
Do you or the average engineer, over the course of their lifetime, save or spend around 190k usd a year on healthcare?
Everybody that I know that has an idea or a business that might be worth something, is moving or trying to move to the US.
The mix of too much regulation, high taxes and difficult access to capital is just too much for most new businesses to handle. So, they are moving somewhere else.
I think, despite the talk about higher quality of life, etc., that is going to make us losers in the long run and actually erode our quality of live. Because we need a productive and innovative economy to keep our living standards.
