i_feel_great··on The Art of PostgreSQL
He is also at CitusData: https://www.citusdata.com/blog/2018/01/12/dimitri-fontaine-p...

By the way, I used to think Citus was bought out by IBM. By no, they are part of MicroSoft.

I don't remember Pepperidge Farm. What was it?
i_feel_great··on Most startup theory is ex-post, therefore bs
Never heard of it, although I work just up the road from the Garden's Point campus. Where can I find a summary?
i_feel_great··on Juul, Philip Morris Sued Under Racketeer Act for Targeting Kids
>>They have some brilliant marketing people working for them.

These people are not brilliant. They are utterly deceitful. To go along with this shit in this day and age is utterly contemptible. Imagine all the people and the planning and the brainstorming to come up with such a trick - how can any of them not feel really really bad and storm out of the room?

Oh yeah, profit.

i_feel_great··on Mapped: The world’s coal power plants
Was initially happy when looking at Australia (my home country) - small circles and no planned stations (maybe Adani in Queensland).

Then I realized that the large circles in China and India almost certainly burn Australian coal.

i_feel_great··on What Happened to Aung San Suu Kyi?
She was always thus. The act she put on was to get sympathy and help when she was on the receiving end. There is no other mystery about it.
i_feel_great··on Nutrient deficiencies in rice grown under higher carbon dioxide
I used to work on GMOs and I fully believe that they are an important part of the solution to world hunger. But increasingly I feel that the same types of corporations/stockholders/countries that are directly/indirectly responsible for the dire state of the environment and all that will flow from it, are the same ones who will benefit from everyone being forced to use GMOs.
i_feel_great··on Flying cars
"We have self-driving vehicles today, the are called buses and trains" - lots of people
i_feel_great··on Mosquitoes Changed Everything
I am thinking of planting more trees and bushes around the yard especially closer to the windows and doors to attract spiders and other predators to set up shop (and also because plants aromatic and pretty and good for the environment).

Has anyone else done this and noticed any difference in mozzie numbers? I live in Brisbane Australia.

i_feel_great··on Ask HN: Best Lisp for software development?

A bit old now, and Schemes only, but still worth a quick look.

i_feel_great··on Russian Hack of Elections System Was Far-Reaching, Report Finds
Americans have been hacking other countries' elections for decades. But now it has happened to America, it will cause the collapse of democracy. What, really?
i_feel_great··on Foreign purchases of American homes plunge as Chinese buyers flee the market
>prices remain the same

Zero growth, return on investments bad, need economic stimulation quick

i_feel_great··on Small horned dinosaur from China, a Triceratops relative, walked on two feet

i_feel_great··on FreeDOS's Linux Roots
FreePascal & Lua! Thanks
i_feel_great··on FreeDOS's Linux Roots
Curious. How exactly does one build embedded applications for FreeDOS? What languages/compiles can I use?
i_feel_great··on Why U.S. Cities Aren’t Using More Electric Buses
In the case of New Zealand from the mid-70's to the early 80's, CNG (compressed natural gas) was subsidised by the government and there was a very large uptake. My dad had it installed in his Toyota Hiace van and Ford Falcons. This was during the oil shortages era.

When oil became cheap again, the government stopped the subsidies and it was back to petrol. The tanks and the pumps at the services stations were ripped out and sold to the Indians, Eastern Europeans and the Chinese.

i_feel_great··on New Twist Found in the Story of Life’s Start (2014)
I always remember the tragedy of Thalidomide (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thalidomide#Birth_defect_crisi...) when reading about chirality.
i_feel_great··on Betrayed by an app she had never heard of
Spam it by labeling phone numbers with shit data and make it useless.
i_feel_great··on Typed Slots for Pharo Smalltalk
Pharo is looking less and less like Smalltalk with every release. I looked at the typed slots a while back and they just look alien. Types in an extreme late-binding language?
i_feel_great··on GNU Guix 1.0.1 Released
Can someone please explain what replaces systemd in Guix?
i_feel_great··on Ask HN: What overlooked class of tools should a self-taught programmer look into
Tools you can use to recover from the loss or destruction of your laptop/desktop as fast as possible. Or having to hand over your password to the authorities. This involves compressing all of the state and data and removing and/or sending it somewhere, and then being able to recover it quickly. And it must be simple, robust and automated.
i_feel_great··on Proteins central to the pathology of Alzheimer’s disease act as prions – study
I still remember undergraduate biology class where the lecturer mentioned that crazy idea of proteins being infectious. Most scientist thought the results were errors and that Prusiner was a fool. Even after kuru was proven to be cause by infectious proteins.
i_feel_great··on Why did Clojure gain so much popularity?
Kawa (https://www.gnu.org/software/kawa/) is even better, and I only ever came across one other person who has ever heard of it.
i_feel_great··on Why did Clojure gain so much popularity?
Alas, it looks like it hasn't had much love since 2014: https://github.com/the-concurrent-schemer/scm
i_feel_great··on No one, not even the Secret Service, should randomly plug in a strange USB stick
In BSDs and Linux, you can recompile the kernel without USB support. But then you will have to go back to using a PS/2 keyboard and mouse.
i_feel_great··on Red Cross Raised Half a Billion Dollars for Haiti and Built Six Homes (2015)
What then do you think is the right way to help these countries out of the rut they are in?

I used to think the Grameen Bank way was the best way, but even that has come under criticism [0].

i_feel_great··on New York’s Rockland County declares measles outbreak emergency
Too many forces will oppose this at every turn. The various religions and political ideologies come to mind.
i_feel_great··on There Are No Dream Homes
I am researching building an earthbag house in Australia. But I am scared it will look bat-shit weird and no one will buy it.
i_feel_great··on David vs. Goliath: Nauru Rejects'one China'recognizes Taiwan as Nation
Nauru is the plaything of the China vs anti-China forces. No good will come of it for the Nauruans. Also other Pacific Island nations
