iKevinShah··on Ask HN: I can't do development any more, what should I transition to?
> Another option, which may be unpopular is to find a less demanding job. No one wants to hear it, but theres a plenty of development jobs, especially in non-tech companies where you don't have to be that good, you won't do much outside the standard 9-5 hours, pay what you want,and you can coast at for a very long time as long as you aren't a total incompetent. These ofc come with their own issues, but it might be the most realistic option you have, although you haven't gone into much details as to why you want out.

What / Where are these companies and where could one look for such?

iKevinShah··on Intel Launches 11th Gen Core Tiger Lake
Wouldn't newer ones be more power-efficient as compared to the older one? I remember reading a post on HN which stated the OP buying older, high spec hardware for cheaper than latest one and almost all comments pointed to power-efficient thing
iKevinShah··on Deep Dive into PHP 8's JIT
I am out of advertising for a long time so I might not be aware but back in 2009s-10s, Adsense had a limit for 3 ads per page.

Is that not a thing anymore? Genuinely curious

Edit: Yes, some initial searches reveal that it's not a thing anymore.

iKevinShah··on TikTok CEO Kevin Mayer to leave the company
It doesn't but sends a good amount of data to China which they have not yet (to my information) clarified. Similar ban was implemented in India, which gives more context to what I am trying to say. Source: https://pib.gov.in/PressReleseDetailm.aspx?PRID=1635206

And parent company will always have the dibs, if you will, on Tiktok. Regardless of whether tiktok is out of China or in.

iKevinShah··on TikTok CEO Kevin Mayer to leave the company
I am neither a US Citizen or a resident BUT this is not only about "geopolitics" but more about National Security too. There's literally a law in China which states you have to provide "crucial information for review" to the government if asked. You(the firm operating in China) cant deny that. Period. That itself is scary, regardless of whether or not politics / geopolitics is involved.

The law (Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/China_Internet_Security_Law) :

> Regarding the requirements for spot-checks and certifications, international law firms have warned that companies could be asked to provide source code, encryption, or other crucial information for review by the authorities, increasing the risk of this information being lost, passed on to local competitors, or used by the authorities themselves.

iKevinShah··on UPI: India's Unified Payments Interface
"UPI is unreliable"

Not saying it is 100% reliable, but there's a good possibility the aggregator you are using (GPay / PhonePay / etc.) might have issues on the whole or with the account.

iKevinShah··on What is Jio, and why are tech’s biggest players suddenly obsessed with it?
"Uber also had a huge number of paying customers" but we knew that they(UBER) were burning cash despite that.

That is not the story with JIO, also JIO is also owned by RIL which has other businesses and would NOT need approvals / investments / bureaucracy to move cash from there to JIO, if need be.

WAY different than Uber / Wework, etc.

iKevinShah··on What is Jio, and why are tech’s biggest players suddenly obsessed with it?
I am no expert in any sense but the comparison to 'limitless amount of money pumped in by Uber or SoftBank in the hopes of “capturing the market and making boatloads of money”' here is incorrect.

JIO already has a good amount of paying, repeating customers and they have the infrastructure setup and working already for 1B+ people (not subscribers).

So yeah, the tech companies might lose it but not like Uber / Wework did (IMO). Also, another important point to note is that Reliance, regardlesss of the political party, will have the backing.

iKevinShah··on Microsoft is reportedly in talks to buy TikTok's US operations
One of the factors might be region but also:

> Consumers (audience) side: Tik Tok use AI to calculate what content will be the best fit for the consumer. When consumer use the app, consumers even do not need to put their preference. AI will automatically get a sizeable database of the consumers’ behaviors.

iKevinShah··on An update on our security incident
Sorry if I am taking this on a tanget, but in one of the HN threads regarding this exact security incident, it was recommended that this is why something called as "Blast Radius" needs to be implemented.

Anyone here with any literature / sessions one could go through for a good gist of things with respect to Blast Radius?

iKevinShah··on An update on our security incident
Hey,

Any good literature which you'd recommend to read to avoid something like this?

iKevinShah··on Trump is moving forward with his plan to regulate social media
While the article doesn't mention it directly or indirectly, isn't this exactly what the social media giants would ideally want? Regulation might raise the `Barriers to entry` for any potential new social media site, if there was any chance of a new one coming up and taking a pie out of FB / Twitter, etc.
iKevinShah··on Twitter internal panel linked to account hijackings
> "Because the audience needs to know how to quickly send BTC."

Yep, I agree with this.While mine guess was purely on "amount of money available to give", your speculation seems more on point.

iKevinShah··on Twitter internal panel linked to account hijackings
Really Qualitty suggestion. Do you have any recommended document / link where one could study how to do this? (blast radius in production). Would be really glad.
iKevinShah··on Twitter internal panel linked to account hijackings
I didnt even know I wanted to know this. My guess is between Jeff and Bill. They're the leading ones who can afford giving twice the money back ;)
iKevinShah··on Wuhan hospital traffic, search engine data indicate virus activity in Fall 2019
Here's a suggestion and no scientific evidence backing this.

The virus might have spread worldwide earlier. There might have been deaths due to it earlier too. There was no way of knowing it until Jan 2020. No testing. Nothing. Also the fact that this virus affects people with existing conditions, there's a very good chance that initial deaths / patient 0 / index patient might have been tagged as dead under their respective conditions. As far as the symptoms go, there's no 'unique' symptom so that might have led to people saying that their coughing is due to cold or whatever.

iKevinShah··on SARS-CoV-2 was already spreading in France in late December 2019
Even if they knew, if they had themselves been moral and decided to stop all travel, it would've been fair to say we are all responsible. They did not do that. Sure all the countries are at fault too definitely (me, as an Indian, included) but doesnt take away the fact that Chinese authorities downplayed this and led to the spread. No matter how you put it and the moment it had spread world over, stopped flights to China to stop spread.

Sorry, all governments are to blame here, for sure (these deaths cant be justified) but China and to a large extent WHO are in the blame here too. Majorly.

iKevinShah··on SARS-CoV-2 was already spreading in France in late December 2019
> moral responsibility of the disease lies in China

Is there a another opinion on this? It's where the virus originated (Lab created or from eating a bat or even US military doing it - whatever you are opting to believe) in November 2019 and it took them until late Jan 2020 to say that there's human to human transmission despite their own doctors warning and telling the world earlier than that (and they were silenced)

iKevinShah··on U.S. judge blocks Twitter's bid to reveal government surveillance requests
> There aren't many/any instances of single corporations causing >10M deaths, or oppressing millions of people.

Sure. But that doesn't mean they dont have a say / influence in it. Take any social network for example, with a small change in their respective feed / discovery algorithm , it could clearly influence it.

> the maximum possible damage by corporate evil is much, much, much, much less than the maximum possible damage by government evil

In my opinion, it definitely is NOT that less. Sure governments can cause wars and all that but the corporations right now have a lot more control over the mind / general public view of things than the government.

iKevinShah··on Ask HN: How can I pick a side project and stick with it?
Definitely not an expert in this but I have found that the bigger the aim, greater the tendency to nope out of it (for me).

So one way of going around this is keeping short, simple, achievable-today goals.

Example Target: I need to develop a CMS.

New target: Need to create that one method which will do X and return boolean value.

Once that is done, on to next.

iKevinShah··on Why have so many coronavirus patients died in Italy?
> Of the 47,000 people confirmed coronavirus patients in Italy, 4,032 so far have died - with a record increase of 627 in the last 24 hours. By contrast China has almost twice as many cases, 81,250, but 3,253 fatalities.

One major problem with this is China's reporting and actual figures.

iKevinShah··on Ask HN: Will Covid-19 be the end of Bullshit Jobs?
Going through the wiki link, some of the jobs might end (or already be at the end of it) but it would be less due to Covid-19 and more due to some automation (and hence cost saving to the business). That said,the following jobs seem fine for the time, maybe the way (or the workplace) might change, but definitely won't end soon:

* Receptionist

* Administrative Assistants

* Lobbyists

* Corporate lawyers

* Telemarketers

* Public relations specialists

* Programmers repairing shoddy code

* Middle management

* Leadership professionals

iKevinShah··on GitHub blocked me and all my libraries
While I understand the reality, this is just how a lot of us did not imagine Internet should be / would be. It's 2020, we should have some way to connect them instead of hoping the victim's post go viral forcing the "Big ones" to act on that particular case.
iKevinShah··on Ask HN: Did you experience any positive side-effects of the pandemics?
I discovered that my office isn't that far away. It is just that traffic made you feel so. Also everyone is so concerned about hygiene and sanitizing everything, feels good.

iKevinShah··on How India, the World's Largest Democracy, Shuts Down the Internet
Context is super important while reporting such news.

"India, the World's Largest Democracy, Shuts Down the Internet " - False.

"India, the World's Largest Democracy, Shuts Down the Internet in the disputed Kashmir region between India and Pakistan " (they had it blocked for entire state of Jammu and Kashmir) where terror attacks are (were?) a norm, specially in Kashmir

iKevinShah··on The magic of generating new ideas
I feel, in my opinion, getting an idea and generating something comparatively easier part compared to actually educating the market / users about what the idea is and what is the solution we have generated, we all see / are a part of so many good products which just had a steep learning curve and hence failed / didnt get accepted.
iKevinShah··on Confluence is broken. Here's how I plan to fix it
Genuine question: In the market of SaaS and cloud, is there a market for performant and self-hosted solutions for the enterprise space?
iKevinShah··on YouTube can terminate anyone they deem “not commercially viable”
If you got to make money, you got to make money - Thats okay.

Major worry here being if I dont be a "money earning user" for Youtube i.e. I have ad blocker and I do not monetize / upload videos, will I lose access to ALL my Google products? (All being analytics, webmaster tools, gmail being 3 main ones)
