i80and··on Canada fast-tracks Pacific oil pipeline to reduce US dependence
I think you're operating in enough bad faith that normally I wouldn't respond, but on behalf of my northern friends, I gotta say

> Obviously Canada should at minimum demand to be brought in as multiple states rather than as one oversized one. Or Canada could just offer to lower tariffs instead. It’s up to them.

This is quite something. Trump does not think in any kind of structured axiomatic way at all as of his decaying health in 2026, and the framework you've put this in is so far outside of any coherent diplomatic framework that it's outright an offense.

No, Canada should not be put in a position where they consider the choice of being multiple U.S. states! What is wrong with you!

i80and··on Canada fast-tracks Pacific oil pipeline to reduce US dependence
Come on this is not just about trade disputes, though that side of things is also deeply screwed up.

Maybe some Americans don't take all the "51st State" and annexation talk that's become a full-on party line seriously, but Canadians are perfectly in their rights and sense to take it seriously and literally.

i80and··on Canada fast-tracks Pacific oil pipeline to reduce US dependence
They're unpopular, but we're apparently a fickle and short-memoried people with few real legal safeguards or principles.

Trump was deeply unpopular at the end of his first term too, and Americans still went back for a second bite.

We gotta look inward and, metaphorically speaking, go to rehab.

i80and··on Canada fast-tracks Pacific oil pipeline to reduce US dependence
Disclaimer: I'm American

I don't see how Canada can trust us again without a major cultural and legal shift in the US. The fact is that any president can, apparently, unilaterally shred international friendships, and 30%-40% of Americans will cheer it on.

I would love a return to normalcy, but Americans need to make sure, really sure this can't happen again.

i80and··on Burning Man death rates – A short lesson in statistics
I mean, entering somebody's tent without being told in advance that's okay genuinely sounds sketchy as hell
i80and··on The state of SIMD in Rust in 2026
I think they meant it should have been deployed to all SKUs instead of the very silly ecosystem split Intel did for a long time.
i80and··on How I changed teaching after AI managed to do all my homework assignments
I might argue that homework is, for mathematics, where the useful learning happens.
i80and··on WH proposes rules giving political appointees final approval on research grants
> Also it really is sad to see “Hacker” News be “World News”. More Zig and less White House, please.

I have been on this website for 17 years (ugh that's scary), and people have been posting variations of this remark the entire time. It's a tiresome sort of post the thousandth time.

Politics have always been a consistent part of this website: it's a big part of the world that hackers live in, and barring rule enforcement to the contrary, hackers will always find politics interesting and want to talk about it.

If you want a website with a more narrow focus, there's always lobste.rs.

i80and··on Mozilla to UK regulators: VPNs are essential privacy and security tools
I don't know the parent's policy position, but it seems like they didn't express one, and you've just assumed they support deanonymization?
i80and··on Understanding young news audiences at a time of rapid change
"Access" is the filthy dirty word here. Can't be anything other than a stenographer because you might lose your ACCESS, with which you can do MORE stenography.

It's a sickness.

i80and··on Ensu – Ente’s Local LLM app
Defunct? I just switched to it a couple months ago, and it seems actively developed.

(Though I think this announcement is sufficiently unpleasant I'm starting to reconsider)

i80and··on God, I hate .env files
They are right to say it though
i80and··on I hate: Programming Wayland applications
That's good to hear!
i80and··on I hate: Programming Wayland applications
Maybe the technical politics have changed, but I feel like I remember there was some push in the late 2000s to rewrite libraries that were using Xlib to instead use XCB.

Regardless, that's sort of my point: having a lower level fiddly layer is a desirable quality, and Xlib being rebased on top of it isn't exactly a counterexample.

i80and··on I hate: Programming Wayland applications
Whenever people complain about Wayland being hard to program in, I think about how Xlib was largely replaced by XCB, and OpenGL is increasingly marginalized in comparison to Vulkan.

Not to draw any specific analogy, but sometimes a fussy low-level interface is just important to have.

i80and··on Denmark was reportedly preparing for full-scale war with the US over Greenland
The absolute lack of consequences Trump faced after his first go-around all but guaranteed the crime spree we're now seeing, and will probably go down in history as the primary blunder of Biden's DOJ.
i80and··on Pope tells priests to use their brains, not AI, to write homilies
Not the parent, but products like it are strongly Protestant Evangelical-coded, so that could actually be a selling point for the intended audience
i80and··on Sizing chaos
ah yes, clothes not fitting, a famously bourgeoisie problem /s

As somebody with an atypical body shape, not being able to find things that fit is an endless source of irritation and discomfort

i80and··on CIA to Sunset the World Factbook
Unfortunately, the citations are generally quite low quality and have in my experience a high rate of not actually supporting the text they're attached to.
i80and··on Adventure Game Studio: OSS software for creating adventure games
Adventure Maker and Bryce3D were an S-tier way of making very nonsensical games as a child!

It would be cool to have a FOSS redux of it, to be honest.

i80and··on Claude Code is suddenly everywhere inside Microsoft
I remember when everything was "Sign in with .NET Passport" as a yoot and just being like "what the hell are you talking about"
i80and··on ICE and Palantir: US agents using health data to hunt illegal immigrants
I really haven't found this to be true at all; corporations are just as dysfunctional or worse.

It's more that there's fewer legal protections, so private surveillance is a great way for governments to launder the illegal things they want to do.

i80and··on Xfwl4 – The Roadmap for a Xfce Wayland Compositor
I ran xfwm's compositor back when it was first introduced on a 400 MHz Pentium II with a GeForce 2. It was fully fine.

The compositing tax is just waiting for vsync; unless your machine is, like, a Pentium Classic, compositing itself isn't a problem.

i80and··on Adoption of EVs tied to real-world reductions in air pollution: study
The 2026 redesign has put in a proper liquid cooling loop.

(Battery heating is inexplicably an extra $300 option, and not available on the base trim AFAICS?)

i80and··on Adoption of EVs tied to real-world reductions in air pollution: study
They often have eSIMs I think, but (depending probably on the car) pulling the modem's fuse can be safe. That's the case for the VW ID.4 at least.
i80and··on Radboud University selects Fairphone as standard smartphone for employees
I found USB-C to be pretty unreliable up until the past several years -- I had multiple phones and laptops from multiple brands <=2020 that just had USB-C ports turn fiddly or outright stop working after a year or two.

Things are better now in my experience, but for a device made in 2019, this is pretty darn plausible.

i80and··on Danish Armed Forces expand their presence and continue exercises in Greenland
About 0%. China really has no serious interest in Greenland, and Russia isn't going to trigger direct confrontation with NATO. At least, unless NATO splinters, which is looking somewhat likely now with this foolish US administration.

Russia and China are just made-up excuses for Trump to do what he wants to do: steal territory, at gunpoint if needed.

i80and··on EU-US relationship is 'disintegrating,' says Germany's vice chancellor
I just cannot stomach the number of people who apparently value nothing except displays of performative cruelty and childish tantrums.

There's been a significant shift of an "ow-I-touched-the-stove" variety towards sanity among independents, but it's a Problem that some significant double-digit percentage of the nation just plain likes this violent self-destructive flailing, and will reward anything as long as it makes them feel like somebody is getting hurt.

i80and··on EU-US relationship is 'disintegrating,' says Germany's vice chancellor
I'm sympathetic to the position that a lot of people just didn't pay attention before voting in the '24 election and voted purely off of some incomprehensibly puerile vibes, but the complete apathy I'm still seeing is equal parts profoundly tragic and utterly crazy-making.

Even if the US backs down, the transatlantic coziness that's felt like a permanent fixture all my life is just gone. And if we don't back down, God help everybody.

i80and··on Personal thoughts/notes from working on Zootopia 2
IMDB stars are probably one of the worst SNR filters you could use for film, to be honest.
