hywel··on Failed Startup Post-Mortems
It doesn't get that far. I type in my email, press the button and "Please enter a valid email address." appears. Not sure why I've been downvoted for the previous comment, your validator really is broken.

6 alpha chars @ gmail.com, on Firefox and Chrome on OS X 10.9.5. Really should work; doesn't. Console shows that you're passing an empty string to getElementById at some point.

hywel··on Failed Startup Post-Mortems
"And our email validator is totally broken"
hywel··on Refactoring Ruby with Monads
This is an excellent article but one of its main achievements is to make Ruby work like PHP (swallowing nil errors). The difference between try and Eventually isn't just that try is on every Object, but that the calling code gets to decide when a nil is unexpected. Personally, I'd rather get errors from nils which I can fix, than swallowed nil values that I'll probably never know about.
hywel··on Show HN: Franc – Detect natural languages
Based on a 2-sec look at the code, it's using a built-in database of trigrams as a predictor of the language.

hywel··on Real Life MMO FPS
Excellent landing page design, but judging by the YT video there's a lot to be done before they can match it with the actual product.
hywel··on This email may be worth millions of dollars in sales
It sounds like you don't like that the email is part of the company's marketing. But wouldn't it be crazy if they sent such an email without making it part of their marketing?

Also, there is differentiation, and explanation of why that's valuable. "We're designed to help improve your'e company's performance in the critical area of XYZ. The ROI on doing that is enormous."

Yes, any competitor could have sent such an email outlining their USP / positioning. But most of them won't, and that's what makes this an excellent example.

hywel··on Loyalty Nearly Killed My Beehive
Kept waiting for this to turn out to be an allegory about a startup.
hywel··on Against Sharing
I think the root of the problem is that the drivers are contractors not employees, so have fewer rights. And that's at the heart of the idea behind the sharing economy, that independent individuals with a resource can offer that resource to the marketplace at ad hoc times.

Whether or not the article is right is another matter, obviously.

hywel··on Against Sharing
Uber must have a lot of drivers if "Arman, an Uber driver in LA" isn't specific enough to be identified.

It would be tragically ironic if this article resulted in his being 'deactivated'.

hywel··on Scotland rejects independence
Normally called Liquid Democracy, FWIW http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delegative_democracy
hywel··on How to see into the future?
It's an interesting article, but those conclusions seem so weak to me; little more than formalised common sense. Maybe the training you had did a better job of making them tangible.
hywel··on Canon printer hacked to run Doom
I wonder if you could turn his work into a preprocessor, so you could just compile a more general source code into a Pixma binary :)
hywel··on Ask HN: How to start earning $500/month in passive income in next 12-18 months?
If anyone is interested in tech like this, I'm selling a Rails app that makes a photomosaic from your Facebook photos. It's no longer online, but there's no licensing the photomosaic part, cos I built it myself. Contact me at <my HN handle>c@gmail.com.
hywel··on Isobuild: why Meteor created a new package system
That's a good find but I'm not suggesting they wrap npm, but that they fork it. I don't think this comment explains why they couldn't fork their spangly new system from a robust existing one.
hywel··on Isobuild: why Meteor created a new package system
Why start from scratch? Seems like reinventing the wheel to start from a blank slate rather than forking npm etc. I guess forking doesn't get you to the top of HN though.
hywel··on Math Riddle: Find Optimal Amount of Fence for Farmer
Just a request that someone eventually post an answer (unless the answer is something ridiculous like blindfolding all the cows, in which case, I don't care).
hywel··on The crushing lameness of April Fools Day on the Internet.
StackOverflow unicoins are sort of fine with me because I can still use the site. But up until midday php.net was rotating every single documentation page which was hyper-annoying.
