Just tried it out, and performance seems really bad at the moment, to the point where I couldn't tell if it was working properly. Does anyone have any suggestions of sites to try this on?

Also covered by Greg Egan in Chapter 2 of Diaspora, with some accompanying drawings here. https://www.gregegan.net/DIASPORA/02/02.html

It took me a bit to figure out that the third statement was meant to be Albert expressing his confidence that Bernard didn't know the answer and not Albert inducing from Bernard's silence that Bernard didn't know the answer. The latter implies something like the Python code below, which will end up giving August 17th as an answer instead:

  def statement3(date):
    possible_dates = tell(Month(date))
    return (not know(possible_dates)
      and not know(filter(lambda x : not know(x),
        [tell(Day(d)) for d in possible_dates])))
hyt7u··on Ask HN: How's working in the Silicon Valley today?
I'm curious about this. I went to a good university (though not known for CS), and I thought that most of my classmates were apathetic/just in it for the money. I certainly never saw the sort of enthusiasm that I see from people on HN (or my co-workers at my startup job).

Are places like CMU or MIT utopias of hacking-related discussion?

(I mean at the undergraduate level, that is)

Ah, great, thanks. I wasn't thinking about modifications to the tree.

> There are ways to do a DFS of a tree without any sort of stack, though

What do you mean by this? You need a way to say that the unexplored nodes we've most recently found are the ones we explore first. How do you do that (with constant time operations) without what's effectively a stack?

This is a particularly disgusting instance of Germanophobia. I guess that tens of millions of people use the German language every day makes you uncomfortable, as well?
hyt7u··on What will it take to run a 2-hour marathon?
I follow competitive running closely; this just isn't something that would happen. Running a marathon takes a huge toll on the body. Professionals typically only run two a year (although certain East Africans sometimes do one or two more), and they usually take an extended break after each one. Competitive runners never approach race effort in their training, especially at marathon distance — it's counterproductive to do that sort of damage to your body.

There's also a financial incentive to run your fast marathon in a race, especially for the runners from poor East African countries who are the only ones capable of running close to the world record. The prize money is typically several hundred thousand dollars if you include the bonuses for breaking the course record and the world record, finishing faster than certain time thresholds, etc.
