hysterix··on Twitter refuses US order to disclose owner of anti-Trump account
The comments in this thread are just as pathetic as I've expected from ycombinator as of late.

Just search for the term, "hate speech" and you'll see this pervasive cancer trying to erode the very fabric of our free society.

If anyone uses the term hate speech unironically, I'd like you to take a long walk off a short pier.

hysterix··on How Lever (YC S12) Got to 50–50 Women and Men
Quite simple really. Because women don't want to do physically difficult jobs like oil worker, construction worker, mechanic etc.

If there are cushy office jobs where you have to sit most of the time, women are clamoring for equality in those. If you have to do a lot of physical labor, not so much.

Where is the feminist outcry to put women on oil rigs in the middle of the gulf?

hysterix··on All Tesla Cars Being Produced Now Have Full Self-Driving Hardware
I know this was just a hypothetical question but as a scuba diver I actually pay for a completely separate insurance on top of my standard health plan called DAN insurance: http://www.diversalertnetwork.org/insurance/dive/

So stuff like a helicopter evac, access to a hyperbaric chamber and the ability to call a number and speak to a doctor who specializes in diving related illness means I already do pay more for insurance than someone who isn't a diver.

hysterix··on Extracting Multiple Bits per Request from Full-Blind SQL Injection Vulns
You guys are absolutely crushing it. Would have never thought to use the response time from a server to be able to extract extra bits of information.

Keep up the awesome work and I look forward to seeing more research.

>the absurdity of the idea to begin with

A false flag operation initiated by America is an absurd idea? What about all the documented and public comings and goings of when America has done just that?

How in the hell is the notion of America creating an enemy to rally against absurd when there is proof of it occurring in the past?

Operation Northwoods - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Northwoods

Project TP-Ajax - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1953_Iranian_coup_d%27%C3%A9tat

Many people say the Gulf of Tonkin incident which initiated the Vietnam "conflict" was also one.

I'm astounded that you can make a statement like that when there is such black and white proof of such incidents occurring in the past. I'm not talking about 9/11, I'm just saying that it isn't out of the realm of possibility for a government to manufacture an enemy.

What I'm wondering is, are you just ignorant and you've never heard of these documented false flag operations? Or instead have you heard of these things and choose not to believe it?

hysterix··on The sad state of sysadmin in the age of containers
Wanted:

3-5 years of linux system administration experience 3-5 years of windows 2000/2010 administration experience 3-5 years of networking level tcp/ip experience with custom protocols 3-5 years of c++ experience 3-5 years of .net experience 3-5 years of .....

I think more than half the job postings out there are created by entry/mid level hr persons who find similar job descriptions on other sites and copy paste requirements. This then has propagated into monster job descriptions you see now.

I noted this as well, for the pay these companies are offering, anyone with that level of experience they are asking for would laugh and move on. It's almost as if it's a trojan horse of a job post. Only those stupid enough to apply to a job post like that are the kinds of employees they are looking for.

hysterix··on The sad state of sysadmin in the age of containers
>What does the language have to do with the program?

I happen to agree with you whole heartedly, if you spend enough time here though you'll see the inevitable comment about how anything made in php is worthless insecure garbage and anyone who spends their time developing a php application are amateurs at best.

This isn't really a comment at you, just wanting to point out how much that convention is challenged.

hysterix··on Ellen Pao Loses Silicon Valley Bias Case Against Kleiner Perkins
Wow. Can you step back for half a second and really examine what you're saying? You're saying, these people you are bringing up: women, minorities, etc. are weak, are not strong enough to pick themselves up, and require people to, "do what you can to support these people in your life, in all their endeavours". Can you turn your white guilt off for two seconds and realize maybe these people don't require your saving?
hysterix··on Lizard Squad attacks Brian Krebs
I don't know if zee gained any skill over time, but I believe he simply used public exploits.

So for example remote command injection vulns:

http://en.1337day.com/exploit/description/20598

http://en.1337day.com/exploit/description/20602

http://en.1337day.com/exploit/description/20671

Then it is just a matter of figuring out where these routers are, and then writing a few scripts to exploit and command them in mass. I don't think CSRF/XSS would net him the vast numbers he'd need to make a significant ddos.

And to more specifically answer your question, by "incoming connections", I mean like monitoring the ddos via netstat on a box zee was actively attacking.

hysterix··on Lizard Squad attacks Brian Krebs
The reply to your question is already on point. There is a sickening amount of open systems on the net. I know zee used tends of thousands of routers as only some of his ddos tools. I also know of dudes who wrote custom scripts specifically for zee's ddosing, would scan for incoming connections matching whatever signature identified at the time, automatically connect to the router using whatever exploit to get in, change the root pass and restart it.

Zee got his net taken away from him numerous times hitting the wrong people.

But yes in a nutshell, the digital world is mostly unprotected open and unlocked houses, with little pockets of protected castles here and there, and some locked houses too.

hysterix··on Lizard Squad attacks Brian Krebs
Well quite frankly if you've been in the scene for a while, you'd be able to tell using other clues, speech patterns, and reused nicks.

Julius Kivimäki aka zee, aka Zeekill (https://encyclopediadramatica.se/Zeekill) has an extensive history, he actually has been dox'd and outed numerous times prior to this.

I knew lizard squad was zee by zee's idiotic behaviour. He constantly used the moniker "Ryan" or "Ryan Clearly" the name of another unrelated hacker. Well sure enough he gave an interview to someone using that moniker. Having even the tiniest bit of inside knowledge it was easy to piece together 1 + 1 = 2 and lizard squad is zee, aka julius.

There are other clues too, believe it or not, not too many entities are capable of massing as large a ddos as they were. Those that have the technical capability, normally don't advertise as such.

Zee was a "special" case, in that he had the capability, and advertised it as such, I was astounded the boy hadn't been jailed years prior. As I mentioned earlier he has an extensive history, and was involved in many of the large site take downs and ddos's that have made public news.

hysterix··on For the Love of Money
Wow. Fractional reserve lending is "innovative"? That is hilarious, absurd, and unnerving at the same time. An entity literally creates money out of thin air, and then loans that made up nothing at interest? That is "innovative"? More like criminal.

Oh right, and then said entity can't actually allow 10% of all withdraws on itself else it is called a "run" on the banks and they close their doors.

What sort of innovation do you see here other than a banking cartel that completely controls the money supply?

Comments like yours make me sick because it shows the brainwashing the banking cartel has implemented is complete from the bottom up and unifying; you now have people like you strutting around calling criminal activity innovative.

When banks create money it is innovative, when the little guy creates money, it is counterfeiting. Pull your head out of the banking cartels ass for a second, and take a breath of fresh air.

Really? You are really going to imply America is uncivilized when you compare it to a country that literally attempted to take over the world and exterminate an entire race of people? Within recent generational memory no less?

Europeans come in two flavors, smug, and really really smug. When will you all get off your high horses?

I think I should say it again because it bears repeating. The country that you just compared america to, implying we are not civilized and germany is, literally attempted to take over the world and exterminate an entire race of people. Civilized? Really?

At least our country was on the right side.

hysterix··on Ask HN: Can we please slow down the stories about Edward Snowden?
I don't mean to make this personal, but someone who submits a wikipedia entry as a submission should not decry posts that are about current affairs directly relating to software development and the tech industry.
hysterix··on Ask HN: Can we please slow down the stories about Edward Snowden?
It's pathetic the defeatist attitude the majority of americans have. We finally get a week or so of pushing these sort of stories to the front page and now people are complaining.

Ironically if you look at a list of recent submissions by this "peterwwillis", you will see a list of boring nothing-to-see-here content that should also be downvoted due to a lack of originality and new content.

Anchoring (wikipedia.org) - yep he linked to a random wikipedia article. I'm so glad we have people like peter to lead hn to a new promise land of link filled content to wikipedia.

Graph of BitCoin market price (USD) (blockchain.info) - Yes because what hn readers need is a link to blockchain.info as we were too incompetent to find it alone.

Ironic a poster crying about content submits such boring, shallow and useless posts.

But something that is actually relevant to current affairs should be flagged and downvoted? The guy who started this thread is a joke.

To all the foreigners claiming this is "american politics" and should be ignored, do you all really have such short sightedness you can't see this effects everybody in the world, not just americans?

hysterix··on Ask HN: Can we please slow down the stories about Edward Snowden?
What an unbelievably awful defeatist attitude.

If everyone had your terrible attitude, nobody would ever do anything about any issue and just simply bend over, cry, and take it.

I'm glad this joker peterwwillis has absolutely no say on what is and isn't upvoted on this site.

Btw peter, I checked your submissions and I thought the majority were extremely boring, unoriginal and worthless, much like this post.

hysterix··on Email Sent by Michael Hastings Hours Before His Death Mentions ‘Big Story’
People mentioning mythbusters as if it is actually a relevant data point is really annoying.

They are an entertainment show, nothing more. Because they shot a tracer bullet at a gas tank (really that's the "evidence"?) means exactly nothing in the real world.

"Nobody is in control".

Wow that is probably the most naive statement I've seen made on hn in a while. If you truly believe that, I've got some beach front property in arizona to sell you.

I love the logic, we aren't being controlled by "reptilians' so therefore nobody is in control? Really terrible statement that is meaningless.

What an utterly useless post. I had to double check I was on ycombinator and not reddit after reading this.

Isn't this a general behavior of typical sterotype (you can't even speak english correctly) european? Most them believes europe as theland of the law and anything else is savagery.

Why even bother making posts like these? We get it, america and therefore vicariously all americans are horrible people, the devil, and should be wiped off the face of the earth. We get it, europeans hates americans. Can we all move on with our lives now?

hysterix··on Mark Zuckerberg addresses PRISM
I've been called a conspiracy theorist enough, I wear it as a badge of honor now. I'm not one of these anti-vaccine, anti-gmo glenn beck style conspiracy theorist.

No, just one that accepts there is most certainly things going on behind closed doors the public is not privy to, which is all the definition a conspiracy is.

People say, "you are a conspiracy theorist" or a "tin foil hat wearer" in an attempt to discredit what you say. The government doesn't need paid goons to sleuth on the internet to defend them, their are armys of people just waiting to comment on how stupid we all are for challenging the government positions/laws. The battle is already lost in the mind of the average american.

hysterix··on Oculus Rift co-founder killed by gang trying to escape police
Why do people make comments like these when deep down they know it's not true?

>They never get away.

This is false. I've personally watched los angeles based car chases where the person gets away even though there was a helicopter and units on the ground right behind him.

He was able to get underneath a lot of trees in a neighborhood, jump multiple fences in a row, and completely evaded the helicopter and police units on the ground.

Why do people like you make false statements like, "they never get away" when clearly people do? Do you live in some sort movie fantasy world where the "good guys always win"?

Anyways, running makes sense if you already have multiple felonys and/or know your crime is large enough to meet federal prosecution.

hysterix··on I Built This AK-47. It's Legal and Totally Untraceable
Wow, where to begin with biased posts like these?

>A lot of people interested in gun culture have severe inefficiencies in their cognitive abilities.

First off you start off insulting a large group of people, painting broad strokes of assumption. You've already lost the majority of all your credibility (what little you had that is) at this point.

>gun culture represents a small and decreasing minority of Americans

There are more guns in circulation and owned and in the hands of americans than there has ever been in history prior to this date. Practically all your opinions on gun control and gun ownership are false.

I'd tell you to go out and do some ACTUAL research on the subject, but judging by the fact you open your opinion insulting a vast majority of americans for no good reason at all, its falling on deaf ears.

I guess I can finish saying that for ignorant people like you, it would be best if you said nothing at all, you are embarrassing yourself.

hysterix··on I Built This AK-47. It's Legal and Totally Untraceable
Extra ordinary claims require extra ordinary proof.

Could you provide at least ONE scientifically accurate source actually proving this obviously biased opinion? Can you provide even one?

Or is this just the standard liberal, pulling information out of your own ass to further your own viewpoint style of thought so common with your type and others on ycombinator.

Also your own words contradict themselves. You open your statement with, "most gun ownership is motivated by...". And then finish your statement with, "A small minority turn to...". Absolutely fascinating you couldn't even go more than a paragraph without contradicting yourself.

And why you are sitting around ycombinator trashing php and talking about which stack is superior, I've gotten loads done with it.

You can write awful code with php or you can write great code with php or something in-between, it's up to the developer.

The fact that you go so out of your way to trash php going to the lengths to question "why lamp is treated as a first class citizen", actually just goes to show your own utter dependency on development environment and existing code base.

So if there is crappy code out there, suddenly you become incapable of writing good code? No, so why sit around on sites and trash a programming language that the final product completely depends on the skill level of the person writing it.

You touch php and all you write is shit code? Maybe you are just shitty at programming? You don't "have" to use ruby or python to write clean, well thought out code. Please get off your high horse and understand that people get shit done using the lamp stack, and give it a rest.

Do you berate any other programmer anytime you see them writing perl as well? You are not superior to anyone because of the technology stack you use.

edit: how about you downvoters, actually come up with a coherent response and tell me why I'm wrong instead of treating this site like reddit and downvoting what you don't understand.

eddit2: I've noticed you have a nice github repo, which includes https://github.com/radiosilence/Ham All of your code looks clean and very decent, I'm just pointing out that php is obviously a good enough language for you to waste your own time developing in it!

hysterix··on Establishing secure connection
My father was an audio engineer/mixer and worked with some big names. He told me a similar story that happened to him later in life when he finally owned his own studio.

There were clients that would always insist on making audio adjustments, for no good reason at all. They were paying to have their music professionally mixed, yet still insisted on making adjustments and changes. Finally my dad and his friend came up with a great solution.

Mind you this was prior to everything being digital, so what they did was they had a massive 24 track. (a really big machine where you can individually adjust the sound of each track) Well what they did was installed a knob that looked just like the other ones in the track, but placed it a bit lower and near to where the client would be sitting.

The client was then told they can adjust the "openness", or the "richness" by adjusting this rotating knob to a particular setting (remember, the knob does nothing, and isn't connected anywhere). My dad said clients would spend hours adjusting this knob until they got it "just right", and would make sure to let everyone know in the studio that knob was dialed in and to not touch it.

It's amazing how many silly things people have to do in all walks of life to placate the ignorant.
