hyperhello··on I am so tired of this bullshit
People who sound like AI when they write, even if they’re liked and productive, have become identifiable because of the overload of ML text. Maybe at some point we’ll identify precisely what we don’t like about the results of telling AI to write, and we’ll become better for it. Patterns are just neutral, really.
hyperhello··on Show HN: Lathoa, a math app for kids where the AI is wrong on purpose
That's orthogonal. Anyone can make a LLC, file a patent, apply for a trademark, do it any way you want.
hyperhello··on Show HN: Lathoa, a math app for kids where the AI is wrong on purpose
I've come around. I think there's really nothing wrong with guiding AI to develop a speculative, experimental, personal project. You're going to see rough edges, but guess what? You see rough edges when you write your own code, too. The process of fixing them is the same process either way: see and adjust.
hyperhello··on LinkedIn Larpmaxxing
It’s part of the Microsoft network of properties that make everything harder to get up in the morning.
hyperhello··on The Beatles have permeated research papers across academic disciplines
It’s a smartphone comment with a lot of layers, a glass onion if you will.
hyperhello··on The Beatles have permeated research papers across academic disciplines
Help! me guess how to translate the headline. People decorate their papers with quotes from the song lyrics. And the article decorated that with words from scientific research like “permeate”, maybe “meta”, could find “tertiary research” in here? Fun!
hyperhello··on The Greatest Pun in JavaScript
Good job, I definitely felt punished.
hyperhello··on Show HN: Building a Markdown editor for Mac, iOS and web
What if any other app starts uploading the files too, though?
hyperhello··on The Normalization of Inexplicable Failures
If you spend more time with a product, you’re more likely to choose to do it again, even if it’s because of failure or annoyance. You’d justify it somehow (I have a leg up now or something). This actually applies to looking at things as well; a brightly colored box on the supermarket shelf is simply more likely to be chosen because you look at it first and longer.

Wasting your time and resources is a power signifier, but getting you to waste your own time and your own resources is hegemony.

hyperhello··on Fifteen years later, the Apple Cards origin story
I’ve dealt with difficult bosses myself so I’d appreciate a legendary story like that.
hyperhello··on Fifteen years later, the Apple Cards origin story
I like these comments that basically say working for Steve Jobs was hard. They carry a legend that is almost creative writing. Every year Steve Jobs becomes more of an evil genius villain-bastard hobbit-creature spreading the seeds of every sadistic personality disorder.
hyperhello··on Uncle's frozen Mac says it's infected after viewing a Google ad. Now what?
I have noticed that it is possible to lag a browser sandbox very badly in some ways like making it deal with stack overflow (the condition not the site). Chrome can’t handle text files past a certain size and goes nutty. So if you put enough into frames maybe you could really stun it while a malware message shows.

Nice picture.

hyperhello··on 'That's so AI ' What gen Alpha's biggest insult tells us
Drawing sneakers the right way is what separates our society from savagery.
hyperhello··on Google’s Project Suncatcher to put ML infrastructure in space
I assume the kilometer-size array would not be series-wired.
hyperhello··on Search – A small, fast WebKit browser for macOS
We used to say, use an open source product and inspect and compile it yourself.

Now endless frameworks and everything make that impossible. So the next step is probably to describe the thing you want to your own AI, in plain English, and have it code it itself.

Of course that will only work until we start using frameworks and everything…sigh.

hyperhello··on GitHub has not removed malicious imitation software after 3 weeks
It’s not a coincidence if they had already found the problem, wrote up the solution, primed it for action, and then it sat in some “management queue” for essentially forever, until someone called someone with a go.
hyperhello··on GitHub has not removed malicious imitation software after 3 weeks
If we have no way to strike back, they will simply suck every drop of blood out the way you use every part of the buffalo. There is no way to escape Microsoft when they just buy everything and turn it into part of their garbage moat.
hyperhello··on Japanese used bookstores see 5x sales surge as books are being bought by the ton
They are the memories of the productive part of society. You can leaf through them and get the feel of what it was like. You don’t need most of your memories, personality, or core ideals to be productive to the State.
hyperhello··on Owners mourn spoiled food after firmware update bricks Samsung smart fridges
Your enthusiasm is catching. I’m not sure I would ever consider a fridge with a built in camera though because of the bad manufacturer incentives. Maybe you could find a wireless camera that you put inside and the fridge related processing - the real point - is done somewhere else?
hyperhello··on What California is learning from solar panels built over irrigation canals
Seems trivial to just AirTag a few car parts and follow the thieves to their warehouse, doesn't it?
hyperhello··on Pentagon says overreliance on AI contributed to missile strike on Iran school
Small children often develop coping mechanisms for their lack of agency. It may be part of these people’s worldview since early childhood that anyone who opposes them should magically die.
hyperhello··on More floating point alternatives
But, as I understand it, 1+2=3 in all of these senses using floating point; as long as you don’t go outside of a certain very large range, they are really a superset of integers.

That makes me think that I can just plan ahead by storing the number of cents instead of dollars, or a “hack”, and then it makes me wonder why the format even requires me to do that.

hyperhello··on The Hierarchy of Money
It introduced vocabulary well enough though? I get that the specifics were all apocryphal.
hyperhello··on Trying the software factory pattern
> March: ok, let’s also get everyone else onto Claude Code or Claude Cowork every single day

May I ask what you’re making that somehow is improved by turning everyone into chat bot controllers?

hyperhello··on AI-generated posters don’t have to be horrible
Well, why did you?
hyperhello··on AI-generated posters don’t have to be horrible
I had to talk back, but if insults and down votes solved anything there would be no insults or down votes.
hyperhello··on San Francisco Onion Futures Company
That’s exactly what I meant. I was only replying to the question as posed.
hyperhello··on San Francisco Onion Futures Company
“Absorbs” volatility might be more accurate.
hyperhello··on San Francisco Onion Futures Company
> The San Francisco Onion Futures Company is not a board of trade, defined as an "organized exchange or other trading facility".

I hate to argue but then what would they define this as, if not an organized exchange or other trading facility?
