hyghjiyhu··on The Vietnam government has banned rooted phones from using any banking app
Well you could take a certified system off-the-shelf and integrate it into a bigger thing.
hyghjiyhu··on The Vietnam government has banned rooted phones from using any banking app
A solution could be having a tiny non-rooted Android system as a "coprocessor".
hyghjiyhu··on US Government demands access to European police databases and biometrics [video]
I think the idea is that if you don't consent you don't cross the border.
hyghjiyhu··on Rust--: Rust without the borrow checker
Imo if you run into the halting problem it's because you are trying to do too much. In particular I think what you actually want is to check soundness based on the "shape" of the code rather than the reason about which variables can have which values and what that means for soundness.

  flag=false;
  if flag {
    use_after_free();
  }
can be rejected with a clear conscience.
hyghjiyhu··on C++ says “We have try... finally at home”
It's important even without the meme. c++ has try-catch but not try-finally.
hyghjiyhu··on FDA approves Novo Nordisk's Wegovy pill, the first and only oral GLP-1
I think it's also the physical barrier. Like how getting bacteria on your skin is no big deal.
hyghjiyhu··on The post-GeForce era: What if Nvidia abandons PC gaming?
Cod devs aren't stupid. They will design a game for the hardware their target market can get their hands on.
hyghjiyhu··on Spain fines Airbnb €65M: Why the government is cracking down on illegal rentals
The "problem" is that a rent controlled apartment is some weird chimera of ownership and renting.

You could take the difference between the market rent and contract rent to calculate a subsidy. Then you could calculate the net present value of the future subsidy payments. This is often a very significant amount of money that you just lose if you move.

Another way of looking at it. Let's say you need 40sqm of space. You rent an apartment of 100sqm. These square meters don't bring you any joy of quality of life at all. If you owned you would move. If you rented at market rate you would move. But if you rent it at a controlled rent you must hold onto it for dear life because maybe you will need it when you start a family in the far future. Getting another contract this good could be very uncertain.

hyghjiyhu··on I'm Kenyan. I don't write like ChatGPT, ChatGPT writes like me
Unlike the last variant, the first two imply there was some quantity of work and it was all completed.

I don't really see the difference between the two though.

hyghjiyhu··on I'm Kenyan. I don't write like ChatGPT, ChatGPT writes like me
I think that's a great sentence to include... you know, provided it's actually true.
hyghjiyhu··on Show HN: Gemini Pro 3 imagines the HN front page 10 years from now
The biggest mistake it makes is how interesting the frontpage is. It should have more obscure things and filler.
hyghjiyhu··on Stop Saying Vibes
After reading that article I come to a different but closely related opinion. Heavy use of the word vibe is symptomatic of elevating instinct above intellect.

My instincts approve of this, so the vibe is good, so I will do it. Absent is the conscious attempt to understand the pros and cons

hyghjiyhu··on The US polluters that are rewriting the EU's human rights and climate law
The mature perspective is that there isn't one big conspiracy. There are many small conspiracies.
hyghjiyhu··on The Free Software Foundation Europe deleted its account on X
It's a sign of someone gifted that they make everything look easy
hyghjiyhu··on Micron Announces Exit from Crucial Consumer Business
I think this is an incorrect zero-sum mindset. Yes in the short term there is a fixed amount of GPUs, ram etc. But in the long run the money from ai and crypto is invested in building factories, researching new nodes etc. These investments will lead to better and cheaper products trickling down to everyone.
hyghjiyhu··on The risk of round numbers and sharp thresholds in clinical practice
I have heard people gain weight intentionally to ensure they get these new weightloss drugs.
hyghjiyhu··on Bringing Sexy Back. Internet surveillance has killed eroticism
I think self censorship is normal and fine and healthy. Well to some extent. Like not all information needs to be shared with all people all the time.

It does become unhealthy if important things go unsaid.

hyghjiyhu··on We're losing our voice to LLMs
We might get twice as many original ideas but hundred times as much filler. Neither of those aspects erases the other. Both the absolute number of ideas and the ratio matter.
hyghjiyhu··on PRC elites voice AI-skepticism
It doesn't really matter what you can trick it into saying. As long as it promotes the right ideology most of the time it's good enough.
hyghjiyhu··on Several core problems with Rust
Due to the unfortunate naming of unwrap_or and friends it's a little (but only a little) more complicated than ctrl-f.
hyghjiyhu··on Moss Survives 9 Months in Space Vacuum
A bootstrap station that can turn asteroids or space dust into probes sounds like a solution for that.
hyghjiyhu··on Moss Survives 9 Months in Space Vacuum
For a photosynthesizer minerals water, sun and co2 should be enough I think? Maybe oxygen is needed too unless it's able to store oxygen for respiration. Now eventually it might start running out of some resource or building up toxic levels off something so you gotta hope that that happens slow enough that evolution is in time to fix those issues.
hyghjiyhu··on Hilbert space: Treating functions as vectors
I think getting hung up on words (in this case index) in mathematics is a trap. They are often stretched to their breaking point and you just kind of go with the flow.

> When I use a word,’ Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, ‘it means just what I choose it to mean — neither more nor less.’

> ’The question is,’ said Alice, ‘whether you can make words mean so many different things.’

> ’The question is,’ said Humpty Dumpty, ‘which is to be master — that’s all.

In mathematics it is the author's privilege.

hyghjiyhu··on Microsoft-backed Veir is bringing superconductors to data centers
High temperature super conductors is a term of art. It does not mean what it sounds like. They still have to be pretty cold.
hyghjiyhu··on Israeli-founded app preloaded on Samsung phones is attracting controversy
Thanks that's important data. I started looking into this and found a case in the EU as well.
hyghjiyhu··on Israeli-founded app preloaded on Samsung phones is attracting controversy
Edited. This seems to be according worldwide despite the article saying it's in West Asia and Africa.
hyghjiyhu··on Rust in Android: move fast and fix things
The obvious(?) question is why it sends gigabytes of stuff to llvm and if that can't be reduced somehow.
hyghjiyhu··on Rust in Android: move fast and fix things
Remember that there are other types of vulnerabilities too. If there are less of them in old code then it may make up for more memory issues.
hyghjiyhu··on Dependent types and how to get rid of them
The fundamental difference is that in his case any conforming compiler has to do the network request. Whereas with LSP it's just an implementation detail of the editor.
hyghjiyhu··on I refuse to date someone who uses ChatGPT
She sounds like someone that has too many good options and needs to invent things to be upset about
