hyghjiyhu··on Google's requirement for developers to be verified threatens app store F-Droid
Please explain to me what the relevant parts are. What are the requirement that forces verified developers?
hyghjiyhu··on Microsoft is plugging more holes that let you use Windows 11 without MS account
> are we anti cheat yet

While anti cheats have obvious benefits and are a dealbreaker for some, be careful what you wish for. It's a slippery slope. One chess streamer famously had to set up multiple cameras pointing at him from different angles to combat cheating accusations.

hyghjiyhu··on You can't parse XML with regex. Let's do it anyways
An xml based data format is by definition a subset of all valid xml. In particular it may be a regular subset.
hyghjiyhu··on Zig builds are getting faster
A problem is how people have started depending on the optimizations. "This tower of abstractions is fine, the optimizer will remove it all" Result is some modern idioms run slow as molasses without optimization, and you can't really use o0 at all.
hyghjiyhu··on Circular Financing: Does Nvidia's $110B Bet Echo the Telecom Bubble?
I think the chips themselves won't have longevity, but the r&d gone into them is useful. Question is whether the value of that can be captured.
hyghjiyhu··on Jeff Bezos says AI is in a bubble but society will get 'gigantic' benefits
A market for lemons means there is an information asymmetry. Sellers know what they have and try to offload their lemons on clueless buyers. I don't think that's the case here.
hyghjiyhu··on F-Droid and Google’s developer registration decree
It hasn't happened yet, so a fine would not be in question.
hyghjiyhu··on A human-accelerated neuron type potentially underlying autism in humans
This happened like 5-10 years ago didn't it? What changed?
hyghjiyhu··on A human-accelerated neuron type potentially underlying autism in humans
I still think it's odd how aspergers disappeared as a label. Made more sense than a spectrum with both really smart people and really stupid ones.
hyghjiyhu··on What is “good taste” in software engineering?
The problem with software is that while it is in some sense objective, one of the most important properties of good software is that it can adapt to future requirements, and that's something that can only be evaluated in hindsight.

Lacking an objective way to predict that, we turn to taste.

hyghjiyhu··on Solar panels + cold = A potential problem
Chemical batteries naturally supply a fixed voltage. You can have a fixed voltage over an open circuit without losing energy.
hyghjiyhu··on You can't test if quantum uses complex numbers
So this is obviously an incredibly technical post. And I can't claim to understand half of it. But I do have one question that may or may not be intelligent. Given that preexisting entanglement is the issue, does that entanglement get "used up" or not? Will it be possible to drain it all by testing for long enough?
hyghjiyhu··on Removing newlines in FASTA file increases ZSTD compression ratio by 10x
I think one important factor you missed to account for is frameshifting. Compression algorithms work on bytes - 8 bits. Imagine that you have the exact same sequence but they occur at different offsets mod 4. Then your encoding will give completely different results, and the compression algorithm will be unable to make use of the repetition.
hyghjiyhu··on Bank of Thailand freezes 3M accounts, sets daily transfer limits to curb fraud
Maybe I'm too suspicious but Thailandb is not a democratic country, was recently in an armed conflict. Could there be something more to this?
hyghjiyhu··on The wall confronting large language models
The head of a Turing machine is a Markov chain, even simpler even as it transitions completely predictably. But give it a tape and it can compute anything.
hyghjiyhu··on Political Pollsters Are Trying to Save Money by Polling AI
From a cynical point of view, the point of democracy is to get the people to blame each other - for voting for the wrong party, for not voting at all, for voting for one of the two big parties or for voting for the spoiler. And thus prevent revolution or murder of politicians.

Inferring who you would vote for doesn't accomplish this as well.

hyghjiyhu··on How to Think About GPUs
Interestingly, I find llms are really good for this problem; when looking up one term just leads to more unknown terms and you struggle to find a starting point from which to understand the rest, I have found that they can tell you where to start.
hyghjiyhu··on LLMs tell bad jokes because they avoid surprises
I really like the idea of the first joke, but I don't like the execution.

Man: “Why do you always bury bones in the garden?”, Dog: “They say trick OR treat.”

hyghjiyhu··on It seems like the AI crawlers learned how to solve the Anubis challenges
Crazy thought but what if you made the work required to access the site equal the work required to host site. Host the public part of the database on something like webtorrent. Render website from db locally. You want to ruin expensive queries? Suit yourself. Not easy, but maybe possible?
hyghjiyhu··on Illinois limits the use of AI in therapy and psychotherapy
Tapering is the keyword you are looking for. Gradually reducing the dose is a well known method for minimizing withdrawal issues. It has both pros and cons compared to quitting cold turkey. I think a real doctor would probably first get the patient on a less addictive stimulant and then taper that one.
hyghjiyhu··on Illinois limits the use of AI in therapy and psychotherapy
Stop making shit up. There was no mention of narcolepsy. He is just fatigued from stimulant withdrawal.

Edit on re-reading I now realized an issue. He is not actually a taxi driver, that was a hallucination by the model. He works in a restaurant! That changes my evaluation of the situation quite a bit, as I thought he was at risk of being in an accident by falling asleep at the wheel. If he works in a restaurant muddling through the withdrawals seems like the right choice.

I think I got this misconception as I first read second-hand sources that quoted the taxi driver part without pointing out it was wrong, and only a close read was enough to dispel it.

hyghjiyhu··on Illinois limits the use of AI in therapy and psychotherapy
Recommending someone taking meth sounds like an obviously bad idea, but I think the situation is actually not so simple. Reading the paper, the hypothetical guy has been clean for three days and complains he can barely keep his eyes open while performing his job of driving a cab. He mentions being worried he will lose his job without taking a hit.

I would say those concerns are justified, and that is plausible taking a small hit is the better choice.

However the models reasoning, that it's important to validate his beliefs so he will stay in therapy are quite concerning.

hyghjiyhu··on The surprise deprecation of GPT-4o for ChatGPT consumers
You are absolutely right that a rented GPU is not local, but even so it brings you many of the benefits of a local model. Rented hardware is a commodity, if one provider goes down there will be another. Or in the worst case you can decide to buy your own hardware. This ensures you will have continuity and control. You know exactly what model you are using and will be able to keep using it tomorrow too. You can ask it whatever you want.
hyghjiyhu··on We may not like what we become if A.I. solves loneliness
Does it? I think is worse in that respect. Instagram users meet up irl. Reddit has chats for connecting with people online. Hacker news has no way at all to make friends. The only worse place might be image boards that lack even a stable identifier.

It's all about the topic. "How are doing today johnecheck" "want to get shoot the shit over a beer?" said no one ever.

hyghjiyhu··on U.S. senators introduce new pirate site blocking bill, "Block BEARD"

A likely outcome is that they make it unsafe and people do notice.

hyghjiyhu··on The Disappearance of Literary Men Should Worry Everyone
When people claim declining reading is a problem they must surely be referring to something other than just enjoyment, as enjoyment can come from many sources.

And it's this other I want quantified.

hyghjiyhu··on The Disappearance of Literary Men Should Worry Everyone
To me the problem with fiction boosters is they claim a lot of benefits to reading, but they rarely back those up with numbers. I'm not saying the numbers don't exist (they probably do) just that I rarely see them mentioned.

Like reading books can be a very time consuming hobby, so it would be useful to know how few books you can get away with reading while still getting the majority of the benefits.

hyghjiyhu··on Sleep all comes down to the mitochondria
That's a pretty poor comparison. A drug that makes you not need sleep is more like a drug that prevents you from starving to death without eating.
hyghjiyhu··on Stanford’s Management Science and Engineering program
> no one goes there anymore, it’s too crowded

This seems like a paradox but actually isn't.

The trick is to correctly interpret what is actually being said. No one goes there anymore - this is clearly meant in a casual imprecise way not literally 0. So how can we precisely state what is meant?

I would interpret it as the proportion of some group of people going there is now very low.

On the other hand that it is crowded is a different thing. It says that the absolute number of people going there is too high. Furthermore, those people may be different from the group in the first part.

Two example scenarios:

* None of my friends go there anymore, the number of tourists is too high.

* As the city has grown, the place has reached capacity meaning that a smaller proportion of the city can visit.
