hydrogen7800··on How California Closed the Montana License Plate Loophole
I am too young to have lived it, but I have read about the Malaise era. To me, it's just when American car manufacturers had to start competing globally, and couldn't, so kept making the same giant V8's, but with 160 hp.
hydrogen7800··on How California Closed the Montana License Plate Loophole
>Car culture has a unique flavor of regressive entitlement. Every bit of societal and legislative progress that has made cars cleaner and safer has been fought tooth and nail by this group.

I'm a newcomer to this hobby, and am amazed how this resentment has perpetuated since their muscle cars were neutered in the 70's by emissions regulations. The resentment has transferred to subsequent generations who were not alive then, who still complain about all the emissions and efficiency efforts that carmakers undertake. Too much unnecessary machismo hanging around.

hydrogen7800··on Whistleblower who flagged Lutnick's links to Epstein dies
Thanks. I did later read this BBC article describing his frustration being a whistleblower with the FCA. It's certainly more than just headline clickbait.
hydrogen7800··on Whistleblower who flagged Lutnick's links to Epstein dies
I saw this the other day and was looking for discussions elsewhere than reddit, but wherever it's mentioned, his death is correlated to his being a whistleblower. Is there any original reporting validating any of that?
hydrogen7800··on So you think you could be an electrician?
I worked at a deli from age 16 to 18. Working alongside people 2 and 3x my age who had been doing that their whole working lives taught me more about life than almost anything since.
hydrogen7800··on Meta Uses A.I. Data Centers to Avoid Billions in Federal Taxes
I got downvoted, but I don't think its evil to work within the bounds of the law to minimize your tax burden. This is the entire point of "doing your taxes" every year. What I do think is evil is using your wealth and power to corrupt the bounds of the law to enrich yourself. Further, however, I acknowledge that this self-interest is inherent in any person/entity and while I have a moral opposition to it when taken to the degree of bribing lawmakers, I don't just throw up my hands and say the incentives can't/shouldn't be changed. These incentives are an expression of what society finds acceptable.
hydrogen7800··on Meta Uses A.I. Data Centers to Avoid Billions in Federal Taxes
>The task of government was not to stop selfish striving—a hopeless task—but to harness it for the public good [0]

I agree we should not let the rich and powerful corrupt our government. I don't know your mind, but I have heard this argument before, usually by folks who consider such efforts to be government overreach. This also ignores the placement of burden in such a corrupting influence; that it is the fault of government allowing itself to be corrupted, not the "selfish striving" person/business/organization. I guess amoral sociopathic behavior is permitted behind the corporate veil and there is nothing that can or should be done about it.

>How many of us in this thread wouldn't take advantage of legal loopholes to pay less in taxes? How many corporations are doing the same?

How many of us in this thread can afford lobbyists to bribe lawmakers to change the law to benefit ourselves?

I always liked this description of Marine aviation: The Navy's Army's Air Force.

What's the difference between getting a speeding ticket from a cop using a radar gun, and hundreds/thousands of automatically issued tickets from a combined radar/ALPR?
hydrogen7800··on DraftKings is using AI to behaviorally target chronic gamblers
>The libertarian in me says people should be allowed to make their own choices

This is a real question/comment, not a snarky one. When a libertarian says "people should be allowed", it seems to me to only mean "individuals". Because when "people", through their government, "make their own choices" collectively, this seems to be where libertarians get worked up.

And a bit weird for me that there are folks old enough to be nostalgic for things that still seem brand new to me. Occasional reminders that I'm older than I realize.
hydrogen7800··on Supreme Court permits states to use SAVE database for citizenship checks
>hundreds of cases this year in Pennsylvania

This something like an order of magnitude lower than the error margin.

hydrogen7800··on Where's the Beef?: The lab-grown-meat revolution that wasn't
I always wondered why they tried to mimic "real" meat rather than just making it its own thing. Gluten free cakes are another example. I suppose you need to first penetrate the market/general consciousness first before inventing a whole novel food.
hydrogen7800··on Unknown number of Texas voter registrations went unprocessed due to DPS error
The judge's decision was not a free speech argument, but a due process one. Rights were taken away without warning, or opportunity to argue or appeal. That sounds like arbitrary executive rule.
hydrogen7800··on Stallman: Thousands Dead, Millions Deprived of Liberties (2001)
Eventually some of them will be right. Choosing which to heed without hindsight is the problem. Though in this case, Stallman was not a lone kook at the time.

hydrogen7800··on 'Fingerprints' inside the Sun could reveal if it once swallowed a planet
I was going to expand on my comment about the difference between alien and non-alien being a difference only in time. It's all from the same stuff.
hydrogen7800··on Irish, Scottish and Welsh leaders meet to plan break-up of United Kingdom
My comment is only half snark, because I genuinely don't know: what's the venn diagram of folks who support this, and who supported Brexit?
hydrogen7800··on LG says we're fake news [video]
I tend to agree with this in general, especially lately, but I think there is an Overton window of depravity that businesses won't exceed the bounds of unless the industry norms shift it. I think the drift has a lot (or maybe everything) to do with the regulatory environment.
hydrogen7800··on 'Fingerprints' inside the Sun could reveal if it once swallowed a planet
>But it seems unclear to me how the researchers would distinguish between one super-Earth and >10^10 smaller rocks?

I have a similar feeling when life on earth is suggested to be "alien", arriving via debris in the solar system as the earth formed. Isn't everything in the solar system coalesced from the same debris?

hydrogen7800··on Topologist's Map of the World
>They included Morocco but not the United Kingdom

Yes that confused me too. If they included Morocco, then France should border Brazil and Suriname.

hydrogen7800··on Topologist's Map of the World
Spain has another land border.
hydrogen7800··on Topologist's Map of the World
Canada was my first guess, and I was able to get the rest of the Western hemisphere after that. I'm looking now for Portugal which i think should be pretty obvious, but I must be missing something.

Edit. Also, I was wondering why there was no French Guyana, but being part of France means it's not a separate country. However, in that case France should share a border with Brazil. I wonder what other such quirks are in this map.
