hwj··on Android 17 is the first since 3.x to add new APIs without releasing to the AOSP
> a reasonable level of security

Whould you recommend using a Pixel 6a in 2026 even though it has no hardware memory tagging (MTE)?

hwj··on Writing by hand is good for your brain
This reminds me of Donald Knuth writing drafts by hand.
hwj··on 30papers.com – Ilya's 30 essential ML papers, in a beginner friendly format
The "ML" here seems to stand for "Machine Learning" (not "Meta Language" as in SML or OCaml).
hwj··on CoMaps – FOSS Offline Maps
Is there a .dmg for macOS outside of the App Store? (I'm trying to avoid the App Store as much as I can).
hwj··on OpenWrt One – Open Hardware Router
I guess the aerodynamic design makes the Wifi faster... ;-)
hwj··on Volkswagen started blocking GrapheneOS users
This even has a name: German Angst.
hwj··on Nano Banana 2: Google's latest AI image generation model
Is it possible to run this locally on Apple aarch64?

(Sorry, I'm probably one of the few HN users left that don't have much experience with AI).

hwj··on The only moat left is knowing things
Website seems to require JS to display anything at all.
hwj··on Deutsche Telekom is throttling the internet
I can tell you that Deutsche Telekom has much much more aggressive sales reps than 1&1. (I've been with GMX/1&1 for ~15 years and with DT for ~2 years).

DT called me on phone over and over again, so much that I had to block them on my FritzBox. Several times they even knocked at my door.

hwj··on EU–INC – A new pan-European legal entity
Thx a lot. Really appreciate you taking the time for such a thorough answer.
hwj··on Stunnel
Another Althttpd user here. Being able to write a "microservice" just by making a file executable is awesome.
hwj··on Show HN: Txt2plotter – True centerline vectors from Flux.2 for pen plotters

> NVIDIA GPU with 24GB VRAM (RTX 3090/4090)

That's a little bit to much for my trusty notebook...

hwj··on EU–INC – A new pan-European legal entity
Thx. Am I taxable in my country of residence even when the money is kept on the LLC's bank account in the US?

Let's say a small side hustle earns me $200/month. The money is kept on the LLC's bank account. Later on, when I visit the US, the LLC is paying for traveling and hotel. Would I still need to pay taxes in my country of residence?

(Even though you probably aren't a lawyer, I'd still appreciate your thoughts on this).

hwj··on EU–INC – A new pan-European legal entity
Do you have any in-depth resources on how to start and operate a US LLC as a foreigner?
hwj··on How to Win Friends and Influence People: Unrevised Version
This is exactly the reason why I went with the 3rd edition.
hwj··on Kidnapped by Deutsche Bahn
I appreciate you sharing the positive experience as a neighbor, but unfortunately, the Deutsche Bahn is as bad as presented here. (I spend several years commuting to college via DB). Once my train stopped in a small village with the announcement "the train ends here". Thankfully, kind people picked me up.

hwj··on Snitch – A friendlier ss/netstat
The README doesn't mention this, but on macOS it's also available via brew:

`brew install snitch`

hwj··on Snitch – A friendlier ss/netstat
It's a mix of everything (in no particular order):

- the author of LuLu is a security researcher; he also wrote "The Art of Mac Malware"

- I already bought two versions of Little Snitch and wasn't willing to pay for the third one

- contacting their support left a bitter aftertaste

hwj··on Snitch – A friendlier ss/netstat
I've been a long time Litte Snitch user. However, these days I'm just using LuLu: https://objective-see.org/products/lulu.html
hwj··on Quill OS: An open-source OS for Kobo's eReaders
Thx. Appreciate your feedback.
hwj··on Quill OS: An open-source OS for Kobo's eReaders
Can you please elaborate a little bit more on this? I'm thinking about buying an ereader but haven't decided yet which is the one...
hwj··on Last Week on My Mac: Losing confidence
I enabled the tap (System Settings) so I can "click" everywhere.
hwj··on Migrating to Positron, a next-generation data science IDE for Python and R
Reading the title, I expected this to be the successor of Electron.

Or at least a positive version of it...

hwj··on Apple reports fourth quarter results
This.

Searching the internet on a phone feels like exploring the world through the eye of a needle.

hwj··on DuckDuckGo Donates $25,000 to The Perl and Raku Foundation v2025
Just in case you're still looking for Perl devs, feel free to drop me a note. I already applied earlier this year, but you went with somebody else back then.
hwj··on Leaving Gmail for Mailbox.org
I did exactly that (left mailbox.org for Purelymail). Advantages of Purelymail:

- cheaper

- unlimited number of subaccounts (e.g. for family members)

- unlimited number of domain names

- support is handled by CEO himself

hwj··on What Microchip doesn't (officially) tell you about the VSC8512
Texas Instruments has awesome documentation. Every single MSP430 microcontroller comes with:

- a family guide describing all features of microcontroller family, usually >500 pages long

- concrete microcontroller guide describing specifics of a single microcontroller, usually >50 pages long

- errata guide describing all(?) known silicon bugs with their workarounds

Also, Clang has a backend for MSP430 by default: `clang -print-targets`

hwj··on Serving 200M requests per day with a CGI-bin
Yes, it's still in CPAN, but previously it was in the standard library.
hwj··on Tabiew: A TUI for Viewing and Querying CSV, TSV, JSON, SQLite, and More
I might have a use case for this. However, when I press BackSpace in the search field it inputs the letter "h".
