huy-nguyen··on MacBook Pro 14-inch and MacBook Pro 16-inch
I think the reason is that the upgraded CPU ($200 extra) automatically triggers an upgrade of the memory config from 16GB to 32GB ($400 extra). That explains the $600 increase.
huy-nguyen··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (September 2021)
Medical Science & Computing (contracted to NIH/NIAID) | Back-end and devops engineers | Rockville, MD (REMOTE possible, US only) | VISA | Full-time

I'm the tech lead who's building out a new software team to build a new "hybrid" (cloud and on-prem) data management and visualization platform to support new "cryo" electronmicroscopes (https://cryoem.slac.stanford.edu/what-is-cryo-em) alongside existing electron microscopes and light microscopes. This new software platform will be both challenging (because of the huge amount of data produced by the new microscopes) and exciting (because of the near-atomic level of resolution that can be achieved). Feel free to reach out through the email in my profile.

The devops job posting is here: https://careers-mscweb.icims.com/jobs/10597/devops-engineer/....

The back-end job posting is here: https://careers-mscweb.icims.com/jobs/10771/software-enginee....

FYI our front-end stack is React (NextJS), Relay, TypeScript.

Medical Science & Computing (https://mscweb.com/) is a federal contractor that provides software development support to a few federal agencies. The most prominent agency and the one that the company has supported for the longest (going on 15 years) is the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Within NIH, I'm part of the Bioinformatics and Computational Biosciences Branch (https://www.niaid.nih.gov/research/bcbb-about), which basically writes software to support scientists at NIAID (the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases). This position is absolutely not the typical "job placement" or "staffing agency" kind of situation. You are effectively a normal, core staff member of the branch and will work closely with and alongside federal employees and other contractors.

MSC does sponsor H1B and Green Card for foreign nationals. We are exempt from the H1B cap so you won't have to go through the H1B lottery.

huy-nguyen··on How to spot a good fake ID
Then you probably haven’t heard of airport TSA agents turning away people with New Mexico license, thinking that New Mexico is in Mexico and not the US.
huy-nguyen··on pfSense CE 2.5.2
I considered both and ended up just using pf on OpenBSD. Very simple config on top of a rock solid OS.
huy-nguyen··on Ask HN: Good books/courses to learn networking essentials for web developers?
This is an oldie but goodie: “ TCP/IP Network Administration (3rd Edition; O'Reilly Networking)” by Craig Hunt. However, I think nothing teaches networking better than making your own network devices from open source components, for example, creating routers/firewalls/access points from barebones Linux/Unix machines.
huy-nguyen··on Maplibre: community-driven Mapbox GL fork
Rough overview:

Leaflet: fairly simple open source mapping library. Canvas-based. The original Mapbox (called MapboxJS) is based on this.

Openlayers: open source mapping library that’s more capable (e.g many different protections) but also more complex. Can render to Canvas or SVG.

Openstreetmap: public and free source of mapping data. Mapbox uses this as a default data source.

MapboxGL: completely new implementation of a mapping library written in WebGL (should perform better). MapboxGL changed its license recently, prompting the creation of the libremap fork.

It's not just migrating the front-end if they're also using other functionalities like Netlify functions, forms, authentications etc. Netlify is not just static file hosting.
huy-nguyen··on Ask HN: How to stay focused and motivated working from home?
My way of staying focused:

- Use the Leechblock browser extension (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/leechblock-ng...) to block all distracting sites (facebook, twitter, news sites etc) from 8.30 to 6.

- Leave my phone across the room. Your phone should never be in your sight.

- Use tactile and audible gadgets (not computer or phone apps) to keep track of time, such as:

- I bought one of the cube timers with audible and flashing lights on Amazon to remind myself to close my eyes for 2 mins after every 20 mins of work. This podomoro timer gives me a sense of momentum throughout the day.

- I use timeular (https://timeular.com/), an 8-sided physical Bluetooth time tracker, to accurately track the time I spent on various tasks during the day. Once I've spent 7-8 hours of work-related tasks, I feel completely free to stop working. This encourages me to focus on work during the day.

huy-nguyen··on Git Commands You Should Never Use
Rebasing is very useful. For example, GitHub allows you to require that branches are “up to date” with (i.e. being direct children of) master before merging. This ensures that all changes team members makes in PRs are made against the latest version of master.
huy-nguyen··on Times Change: Inside the New York Times’ Heated Reckoning With Itself
I still highly respect NYT but I agree that the tone of its headlines (if not the actual article text) in general has gotten more sensationalized over time. I now read both NYT and the news section of WSJ to get a more balanced perspective (I steer clear of the opinion section of WSJ because it's a total dumpster fire).

huy-nguyen··on SCMP: US Dollar Risk of a Sudden Collapse
The argument seems to be that the Fed's massive QE and Congress' large deficit spending will lead to instability but other candidates for the reserve currency status have their own problems too. The euro zone just announced a large stimulus program for the whole continent. China's monetary system is opaque and is not run according to the rule of law. With a new Biden administration, we probably will return to a more sane decision making process. Probably won't be as China friendly as before but rational thinking will prevail.
huy-nguyen··on I’m Peter Roberts, immigration attorney who does work for YC and startups. AMA
In the latest EO, the Trump administration mentioned changing the H1B program to protect American jobs better and transitioning to a merit-based system. There may not be enough time to make that happen but I imagine some sort of immigration reform along those lines will happen if Biden wins the next election. What reforms do you expect to see to the H1B program and employment-based green card? How should current H1B visa holders do to prepare for those changes?
huy-nguyen··on Who still needs the office? U.S. companies start cutting space
Will this trend revive the fortune of WeWork? We can have a future where teams within a company decide on “core days” where everyone is in the office but WFH the rest of the week and the company can pay for a variable number of office spaces depending on the week day. WeWork can become the cloud but for office spaces.
huy-nguyen··on Ask HN: Google removed my site from search results, what can I do?
I’ve done this a few times. Even if you do 301 redirects properly, it still can take a month or two for google traffic to day get back to previous level. You might just have to be patient.

huy-nguyen··on Ask HN: What do you want to see in a resume / GitHub profile?
Not all certifications are bad. Some are quite good. For example, the Google Cloud certifications (associate cloud engineer, professional cloud architect, professional data engineer, professional cloud developer etc) give you a good technical understanding of GCP services and to use them to achieve business objectives.
huy-nguyen··on MIT and Harvard file suit against new ICE regulations
That’s not true at wealthy schools. I went to Reed (not need blind) and only half the student body there pay full price. That portion should be lower at Harvard and MIT.
