husseiny··on I rebuilt a full event platform in 5 weeks using Claude Code
Happy to answer anything about the process, stack, or migration.

TLDR on tips:

- Have good documentation and details on what you want built

- Focus each session on one task/area

- Ask Claude to write a plan and tests before building features

- Work with Claude like you would a junior engineer

- If it fails to fix a bug twice in the same session, stop and start a new session

- CLAUDE.md is your BFF

husseiny··on Ask HN: Can anyone suggest me a SaaS product idea?
hmm... I think these days the problem is not being able to build on an idea or coming up with ideas. LLMs are great at both.

What are you facing? What are you dealing with? What are your problems? What communities do you have around you? What communities are you involved in?

Have you thought about those sorts of questions to help you decide what to dedicate your time to?

husseiny··on Why most AI projects feel useless
Honestly, it's because the barrier to entry is getting lower and lower. This is the same as what happened to newsletters back in the day and blogs before that. Used to be hard to get in so quality was higher but then it got so easy, that anyone could do it and the market got flooded with crap. Everyone is jumping on building with AI and launching new tools they built over the weekend, most likely they will get abandoned within a couple of months if not weeks.
husseiny··on Harvest Treasuries AMP: What you wish your savings account could be
The yield is great on these: 5.16%. Not including tax savings if you compare to a traditional high yield savings account.

note: I work at Arta.

husseiny··on Would you invest in this company?
Yeah, very fair point in that the company needs to exist and be real. I wish I had ChatGPT when I was raising for my startup a few years ago. But, the example was a complete hypothetical and it did a pretty good job, won't you say?
husseiny··on Should your company block ChatGPT?
Hey folks, I used to be a CTO for two separate fintechs and even was the founder of another that I recently sold.

People keep asking me if their companies should block ChatGPT, so I decided to write an article about it.

Check it out and let me know what you think – I'm curious about your experiences and opinions on this topic!

husseiny··on Ask HN: What do you use to make slides/presentations (preferably in md/txt)?
Keynote, it works great
husseiny··on Ask HN: Financial websites/communities other than Zerohedge or Wall Street Bets?
I have yet to find a really great community of investors. I've joined a few Facebook Groups that are decent but nothing great yet.

ZeroHedge is impossible to read through, there are ads everywhere.

husseiny··on Show HN: Pingr – Spent ~800 hours for a product with 170 competitors
Congrats again, saw you on PH first. I plan on using your service once we launch in a few weeks because Pingdom doesn't need more users. Would rather help someone starting out (as long as you are monitoring your own site ha!)
husseiny··on Show HN: A tool for editing, optimizing and converting SVG files to JSX or PNG
This is really cool, I love little tools like this that can help you with a quick task when needed. One thing that would make this even better is being able to click on an element in the SVG and choose a color from there.
husseiny··on Show HN: I made a patent search tool designed for stock research
Feels like if this is going to be used as a stock screener, the search should start at the company level not a keyword. Or show a list of recent patents by Russell 3000 companies that don't match the previous x number of patents filed by that same company.
husseiny··on [dead]
Congrats on your launch. Very cool landing page. Curious on how you got people from Google, Lyft, Dropbox and Amazon to try your tool? Or are these all placeholders?

One thing you might want to consider, there are tons of tools like this one out there and usually you can enter your URL and see the results then sign up. It felt like an off workflow having to sign up to see a sampling of the analysis for my site.

husseiny··on Show HN: Devsheets – Quickly find the cheatsheets for everything tech
Love it! We all have our own, why not centralize and share!
husseiny··on Launch HN: Datafold (YC S20) – Diff Tool for SQL Databases
Very cool! Does it work with MS SQL in our own DC?
husseiny··on Why you're having vivid dreams during the pandemic
interestingly enough, I never used to remember my dreams until recently
husseiny··on Show HN: I built an app that subscribed to all development newsletters
cool idea! I kept trying to click on one of the tags hoping it will filter the list on articles with that tag only.
husseiny··on Ask HN: What are your unused domain names and how much would you sell them for?
How many people own autositer.com?
husseiny··on What is your current side project?
Nice question. This is bound to get you good Karma on HN :) Anyways:

http://homebuyinglist.com

I just closed on a house and the process was really painful. So I decided to put a list of resources together in the hopes that they will have an easier time on what should be a joyful experience.

husseiny··on Ask HN: How to get stock as a contractor or consultant?
You may be able to negotiate to be paid in stock versus $$$. Very early stage startups that have not raised a round of funding might go for that deal.

I am working on a startup that is currently bootstrap and am very open to getting work done for shares vs salaries.

husseiny··on Ask HN: Sunrise Calender users, what app will you switch to?
I am back to the standard iOS Calendar. Don't really love it. I hear Outlook is actually pretty good.
husseiny··on Show HN: Home Buying List – list of stuff you need to do to buy a house (in CA)
Wow, sorry to hear that. Interesting perspective tho, I changed the colors but not sure you mean to say: #00000f that is on the black side.
husseiny··on Show HN: Home Buying List – list of stuff you need to do to buy a house (in CA)
Good point, fixed :) (and thank you)
husseiny··on Show HN: Home Buying List – list of stuff you need to do to buy a house (in CA)
thanks! missed this, changed to blue.
husseiny··on Show HN: Home Buying List – list of stuff you need to do to buy a house (in CA)
I recently bought a house in California and had to endure a pretty un-organized, stressful, unclear and unknown 30 day journey to get there. I kept asking all of the involved parties for a clear roadmap, checklist, etc but none seem to have a good one that covered the process end to end so I figure I would put one together now that I am done with the process.

I plan on updating and adding more to this soon but am looking for early feedback on the set up of the site, navigation, clarity, etc.

Any early feedback would be great!

husseiny··on What language has the quickest payback?
If your goal is to make money and don't want to spend the effort and time to really learn coding I would focus on simple web presence development versus "coding".

What I mean by that is learning to code takes a lot of patience and diligence. For you to truly add value to a team building a product you will need to learn best practices, theories, tools, Git, code structure, code style, etc.

If you want a quicker path, practice launching and customizing Wordpress/Wix/SquareSpace sites and focus your efforts on people looking for a web presence instead of people trying to build apps and products. That should be an easier path for you.

husseiny··on Ask HN: Do recruiters follow up emails ever work?
Depends on timing. You can ignore an email a few couple times but then that special day arrives and you get that same email again but something is different in your situation so you actually respond this time.
husseiny··on Ask HN: How do I earn money?
There is a high demand for engineers right now so with a little bit of patience and hard work you will find your way I am sure. Here are a few things you can try:

1- Start by creating a web presence for yourself, a simple bio website that explains who you are and what you do a long with links to some of your work.

2- Create a GitHub (or Codepen) account and open source any reusable code, plugin, etc. Just make sure you actually own the work and are allowed to do this.

3- Create a profile on UpWork and find freelance work there.

4- Pick a side and a language and start specializing a bit. It's great to be well rounded and have lots of skills but it is a much easier sell to say I am a front end engineer and love building UIs, I am experienced in CSS, JS, Angular, etc. versus I do C, C++, front-end stuff etc. You can mention that you are comfortable on any side (front or back) but it is better to say which is your stronger skill.

Good luck!

husseiny··on How is the work quality at Blizzard as a developer?
I don't work at Blizzard but know someone who recently went there. I have not spoken to her yet about her experience but I would imagine that by "not what everyone expects" is probably related to the fact that at the end of the day it is still a business, gaming or not, they have bills to pay.
husseiny··on Ask HN: How do you start a project?
Really depends on what the project is. Assuming you are referring to an app or website.

I always start with an Evernote page with my general thoughts, then grab a pen and paper and start drawing what could be a barebones UIm then do more research.

I go through the cycle again and again until I am ready to graduate to Balsamiq for a clearer UI and have a clearer story to tell about the project.

I try to balance between doing and researching. I find that excessive research in the beginning is just another form of procrastination of just starting.

husseiny··on Why Homejoy Failed
What I don't understand is if someone is willing at accept employment at a company under 1099 vs W2 why is it up to the government to say that it is not allowed? Can't that person just not work at this employer and seek employment elsewhere?
