The other option is to have an intrusion prevention switch or two in the case so the TPM locks itself in some way and the machine refuses to boot at all without some PKI attestation.
I've been working with Operation Connect Carolina to get Internet connectivity to hospitals, aid centers, and residents of Western North Carolina who have been severely impacted by the flooding caused by Hurricane Helene. We're building and deploying ad hoc communications systems to the region in partnership with established, experienced organizations. Would you consider helping by providing a donation?
DHH only has strong feelings. Katherine Maher is a great CEO and leader and has been taken out of context in order to isolate her and make her unsupportable by people who claim to not like cancel culture. The whole thing is ridiculous.
I have always likened AWS Account IDs to be similar to public keys. But even less useful. There is nothing useful that you can do with them without other information.
I have used this and other techniques for years and never gotten shut down. Passing through S3 is also generally more efficient for distributing data to multiple sources than running some sync process.
This seems to be an incremental improvement on old technologies that still burn CO2. They mention the solar concentrators, but that's sort of a nonstarter in the US for various (mainly economical) reasons. I mean 10% efficiency improvement is a useful thing, but this is hardly a "clean" form of power generation.
I think this is hype cycle thinking by the press. Projects start and fail for all sorts of reasons in every company. OpenAI wasn’t exactly a huge company with thousands of employees at the time. Failures happen when you’re trying to build a new market. No big deal.
There seems to be some issues with it. I've had lots of problems as well with "selected but offline" errors, especially if tailscaled is running in usermode.
Unfortunately that's not how it works. There is a protocol at the payment processor for Apple Pay (at least) that has to be followed so that the device card number (not the card number on your card and not a "virtual card") is tied to the correct account. It's a whole thing. Most POS systems ship with support for it at this point. And you have to sign some sort of agreement so that you are compliant.
I believe this sort of system is one of the main reasons why WGA and SAG-AFTRA are striking. Even though this seeks to "augment" the writing process, it ultimately leads to not needing a writer at all. It also just requires an actor provide enough audio to generate a believable voice. All of the limitations to fully automated episodic generation are essentially temporary.
Apple has not been silent. The whole iOS 17 release has AI stuff sprinkled all through it. They just aren't speaking the same language as everyone else. They are also hiring generative AI folks like crazy for things like Siri. They want to own the on-device space and are well on the way to revolutionizing their operating systems and hardware to do it.
Why is this not set up to filter spam out of the box? It's not really an optional thing at this point, and writing Sieve scripts that work well is not necessarily easy.
