huseyinkeles··on Show HN: Control Panel for YouTube
As annoying as it is, I remember a channel I subscribed to once mentioned that they did a little AB experimentation and turns out “surprised face” thumbnails do actually attract more views.
huseyinkeles··on 23andMe is reportedly turning the blame back on its customers
When you are able to log in, you then see who are related to you as well. I believe the news sites use those inflated numbers to make it more dramatic.
huseyinkeles··on 23andMe is reportedly turning the blame back on its customers
From what I read, people got their credentials breached on some other websites. Hackers then somehow used those same credentials to log in to 23andMe.

I see that 23andMe could’ve forced MFA, or have a better brute force protection for sure but seems like 23andMe themselves didn’t breach any passwords at least.

huseyinkeles··on Ask HN: Advice on starting a YouTube channel?
If we take subscriber count as success criteria, most of the channels you recommend do not look very successful.

So maybe being original and different is not really paying off sometimes?

huseyinkeles··on DeviceScript: TypeScript for Tiny IoT Devices
I've been doing home automation for many years.

From what you described, using Home Assistant in the center would be the way to go (works fine on a raspberry pi, in the beginning at least)

For the devices, I mainly use zigbee sensors and lights etc. and bunch of fully DIY stuff running mostly on ESP32 with ESPHome.

For the starters, you can skip the zigbee devices all together and experiment with Home Assistant + ESPHome

Yes, Neovim natively supports LSP (Which, interestingly we have thanks to VSCode. It binds to the same thing that VSCode binds to. So you have feature parity). [0]

And anything related to debugging, we have nvim-dap. (Which AGAIN we have the DAP (Debug Adapter Protocol) thanks to VSCode) [1]

huseyinkeles··on Hue Light Hack
I have 3 Hue light bulbs + 3 IKEA Tradfri light bulbs ( + bunch of other zigbee stuff, in total ~40 devices in my mesh network)

I started home automation with a Philips Hue starter kit but built my own zigbee network with Home Assistant later on. I'd say IKEA light bulbs, being around half the price of Philips, are pretty much on par with them.

The worst lights I had were OSRAM, they kept losing the zigbee connection and were PITA all the time.

That’s because OpenAI can use any data that you send to chatgpt for training purposes. [0] They don’t do it with their APIs btw.

This is amazing. They even let the developers use it for commercial purposes;

“Developers can freely inspect, use, and adapt our StableLM base models for commercial or research purposes, subject to the terms of the CC BY-SA-4.0 license.“

You can use this link to interact with the 7B model;

“Can you name all of the soccer players whose names contain a Z”
huseyinkeles··on Vicuna: An open-source chatbot impressing GPT-4 with 90% ChatGPT quality
Interesting. GPT3.5 almost completely fails at this task. Just spouts some random names, some of which has the letter Z. Once you point it out, it tries to fix the list but after 4-5 tries, the list still was not perfect.

GPT4 on the other hand gave a correct list on the first try.

----

GPT3.5

Zlatan Ibrahimovic - Swedish professional footballer who plays as a striker for AC Milan

Sergio Ramos - Spanish professional footballer who plays as a center-back for Paris Saint-Germain and the Spain national team

Karim Benzema - French professional footballer who plays as a striker for Real Madrid and the France national team

Marcelo Vieira - Brazilian professional footballer who plays as a left-back for Real Madrid and the Brazil national team

Naby Keita - Guinean professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Liverpool and the Guinea national team

Danilo Pereira - Portuguese professional footballer who plays as a defensive midfielder for Paris Saint-Germain and the Portugal national team

Andreas Christensen - Danish professional footballer who plays as a center-back for Chelsea and the Denmark national team

Georginio Wijnaldum - Dutch professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Paris Saint-Germain and the Netherlands national team

Lorenzo Insigne - Italian professional footballer who plays as a forward for Napoli and the Italy national team.

----

GPT4;

There are many soccer players whose names contain a Z, but I can’t name them all. Here are some examples from different countries and regions:

Zlatan Ibrahimović (Sweden)

Zinedine Zidane (France)

Zico (Brazil)

Zvonimir Boban (Croatia)

Zé Roberto (Brazil)

Zbigniew Boniek (Poland)

Zah Rahan Krangar (Liberia)

Zlatko Zahovič (Slovenia)

Zećira Mušović (Sweden)

Zoran Tošić (Serbia)

huseyinkeles··on OpenAI tech gives Microsoft's Bing a boost in search battle with Google
Bing chat is using GPT-4 and does provide sources.

Also, it has access to the internet, so I am able to ask about very recent movies etc.

huseyinkeles··on Ask HN: How many of you are open to Piracy again?
I already gave up and installed Plex along with the *arr apps on my home server.

I still pay for Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, YouTube premium etc. but I find myself many of the times I want to watch something, I just use my home server rather than even checking if they exist on Netflix or Prime video.

Can’t give up YouTube premium, but probably will stop having Netflix as soon as they block password sharing.

this is cool

> my sister's name is lisa

It's nice to hear that you have a sister named Lisa. Do you and Lisa get along well? Is there anything you'd like to tell me about her?

> my nephew's name is John

It sounds like you have a nephew named John. Do you and John have a close relationship? Is there anything you'd like to tell me about him? It's always nice to have a close relationship with family members, especially younger ones like nephews.

> who is John's uncle?

If John is your nephew, then you are John's uncle. An uncle is the brother of a person's parent. So, if your sister is John's mother, then you are John's uncle. In many cultures, uncles play an important role in their nephews' lives, providing guidance, support, and a sense of family connection.

Yeah but you need to have a desktop PC to start with. And also don’t forget to add the energy prices.
