hurturue··on The Number That Turned Sideways
have you seen this? is a great explanation why complex numbers are "numbers that like to turn"

can you tell if you flip -1 and 1? or just the i and -i axis is special

hurturue··on Light intensity steers molecular assemblies into 1D, 2D or 3D structures
I was thinking that in principle you could use intricate laser beam patterns to direct the construction of self-assembling molecular structures from existing atoms at interstellar distance, thus basically construct nano-bots that will construct a computer that then you can upload an AI into.
hurturue··on Microsoft AI
After you read all the fluff, the real purpose of this website is at the end of each article:

We’re a lean, fast-moving lab made up of some of the world’s most talented minds. We have an exciting roadmap of compute at MAI, with our next-generation GB200 cluster now operational. And we have an ambitious mission we truly believe in.

Now they learnt that Chinese can do marketing too.

hurturue··on AI agents are starting to eat SaaS

hurturue··on Claude CLI deleted my home directory and wiped my Mac
there's an infinite amount of ways to delete a file. deny listing commands doesnt work.

python3 -c "import os; os.unlink('~/.bashrc')"

hurturue··on Claude CLI deleted my home directory and wiped my Mac
I do to. Except I can't be burnt since I start each claude in a separate VM.

I have a script which clones a VM from a base one and setups the agent and the code base inside.

I also mount read-only a few host directories with data.

I still have exfiltration/prompt injection risks, I'm looking at adding URL allow lists but it's not trivial - basically you need a HTTP proxy, since firewalls work on IPs, not URLs.

hurturue··on Some surprising things about DuckDuckGo
the fact that I didn't know about this shows you the problem
hurturue··on Some surprising things about DuckDuckGo
the most surprising thing is why they didn't change this terribly long and impossible to remember name which completely killed them after all these years

yes, yes, I know why it's named like that

hurturue··on Ask HN: How can I get better at using AI for programming?
your OS might have a built in dictation thing. Google for that and try it before online services.
hurturue··on Ask HN: How can I get better at using AI for programming?
I did a similar thing.

put an example in the prompt: this was the original Django file and this is the rewritten in SvelteKit version.

the ask it to convert another file using the example as a template.

you will need to add additional rules for stuff not covered by the example, after 2-3 conversions you'll have the most important rules.

or maybe fix a bad try of the agent and add it as a second example

so between 0 (good) and 100 (bad), what would be your gray score "badness/evilness" value for the following: Russia, US, China, EU

yes, i know, it's not a linear axis, it's multi-dimensional perspective thing. so do a PCA/projection and spit one number, according to your values/beliefs

hurturue··on Guarding My Git Forge Against AI Scrapers
in general the consensus on HN is that the web should be free, scraping public content should be allowed, and net neutrality is desired.

do we want to change that? do we want to require scrapers to pay for network usage, like the ISPs were demanding from Netflix? is net neutrality a bad thing after all?

hurturue··on Has the cost of building software dropped 90%?
when compiler appeared assembly programmers would complain all day how ugly and inneficient the generated code was

if you want to get the productivity gain you need to figure out how to solve the code review problem

hurturue··on Has the cost of building software dropped 90%?
if you back and forth with the model, and discuss/approve every change it does, that's the problem.

you need to give it a bigish thing so it can work 15 min on it. and in those 15 min you prepare the next one(s)
