hurrdurr57··on New Phi-3.5 Models from Microsoft, including new MoE
The Phi models always seem to do really well when it comes to benchmarks but then in real world performance they always fall way behind competing models.
hurrdurr57··on Google Releases Powerful AI Image Generator You Can Use for Free
Will it generate racially diverse Nazis at higher resolutions than their old model?
hurrdurr57··on The movement to diversify Silicon Valley is crumbling amid attacks on DEI
>the biggest indication of flawed leadership is a company or agency leadership photo where the majority percentage of the people in it are all the same skin tone.

Does this opinion come from your actual experience or just from your ideological indoctrination?

Virtually all non-western businesses have zero concern about fostering racial diversity, they are all failures in your opinion?

hurrdurr57··on New EU rules promoting repair of goods enter into force
Realistically, I think it would have to be from the release date.
hurrdurr57··on AI models that cost $1B to train are underway, $100B models coming
Given how quickly AI is progressing from the software side, and how poorly AI scales from just throwing raw compute time at a model, I don't see a company holding onto the lead for very long with that strategy.

If I can come out with a model a year later, and it can provide 95% of the performance while costing 10% as much to run, I think I would end up stealing a lot of customers before they had a chance to break even.

Take Llama3-8B for example, this is an 8 billion parameter model from 2024 that performs about as well the the original ChatGPT, a 175 billion parameter model from 2022. It only took 2 years before a model that can run on a desktop could compete with a model that required a data center.

hurrdurr57··on AI models that cost $1B to train are underway, $100B models coming
Well, I guess the question I have is, what exactly does he mean by the "cost to train"? As in, just the cost of the electricity used to train that one model? That seems really excessive.

Or is it the total overall cost of buying TPUs / GPUs, developing infrastructure, constructing data centers, putting together quality data sets, doing R&D, paying salaries, etc. as well as training the model itself? I could see that overall investment into AI scaling into the tens of billions over the next few years.

hurrdurr57··on Survivor of Parkland school massacre wins ownership of shooter's name in lawsuit
>Cruz cannot give any interviews without his permission

That's a really weird settlement.

hurrdurr57··on Open-Sora does pretty good video generation on consumer GPUs
Hammers don't kill people, people kill people

... with hammers

hurrdurr57··on Why has LLM progress seemingly stalled around the GPT-4 level? Or has it?
Well, the statement that GPT-4 is 1.8T parameters is a little misleading since it's really a 8 x 220B MoE (according to the rumors at least).

Also the size of the model itself isn't the only factor that determines performance, LLama 3 70B outperforms LLama 2 70B even though they have the same size.

hurrdurr57··on The 'Compact' Version of Stable Diffusion 3 Is Generating Monstrous Human Bodies
This would be doable, but expensive. You'd need to pay people to go through 10,000 pornographic images and manually blur out all of the fun bits.
hurrdurr57··on Meritocracy at Scale
Personally, I think hierarchies are tyrannical and oppressive and should be abolished entirely.

As I have just demonstrated my selfless pursuit of equality for all, naturally I should be placed at the very top of the new non-hierarchy.

hurrdurr57··on The 'Compact' Version of Stable Diffusion 3 Is Generating Monstrous Human Bodies
And their only hope is to get more investors to prop them up.

So it kind of makes sense that they would go with a conservative model that was virtually immune to the AI porn / deepfake panic.

hurrdurr57··on AMD CEO Lisa Su reminisces about designing the PS3's infamous Cell processor
This is what I've heard as well. They started with one cell, when it failed internal expectations they switched to two cells, then when they heard the rumors of what Microsoft was doing with the Xbox 360 they ran to Nvidia to get a real GPU.
hurrdurr57··on Meritocracy at Scale
>A less charitable interpretation is that they are attempting specifically to recruit people who would prefer to work exclusively amongst people very similar to themselves.

This is the case with pretty much everyone.

When it comes to companies that have an aggressive DEI policy, you may end up with employees more diverse in terms of race and sex, but they are usually all required to adhere to the exact same ideology. They only hire people very much like themselves, only on a different metric.

hurrdurr57··on Meritocracy at Scale
>DEI is fundamentally anti-marxist.

It's not explicitly Marxist, but come on, it does borrow quite a few key ideas.

That's kind of like saying Methodists are fundamentally Anti-Christian because they've deviated from Catholicism.

hurrdurr57··on Announcing the Open Release of Stable Diffusion 3 Medium
They also have small, large and ultra size models. Who knows if those will be made open though.
hurrdurr57··on Stable Diffusion 3 mangles human bodies due to nudity filters
I think it's mainly from the fact that they had the same problem in SD 2.0. In the interest of safety they removed so many NSFW images from the training set to the point that it could no longer generate coherent images of humans in general. This was resolved when they added NSFW pictures back into the training data for SD 2.1.

We won't really know for sure unless stability ai comments on it or releases the training data but it is the most likely explanation.

Someone will likely train this model on porn anyway in the next few months so we'll see if the finetuned models work better.

hurrdurr57··on Nietzsche's Guide to Greatness
Tesla also died penniless and alone.

I guess the whole electricity thing wasn't a very good idea after all.

hurrdurr57··on Study shows N95 masks near-perfect at blocking escape of airborne Covid-19
Could you imagine how different things would have turned out if the vaccine was ready while Trump was still in office?

The right wing media outlets would be praising it and claiming that it was everyone's patriotic duty to get vaccinated.

The left wing media outlets would be pushing out articles and documentaries about how vaccine compliance is rooted in implicit white supremacy.

hurrdurr57··on Study shows N95 masks near-perfect at blocking escape of airborne Covid-19
>I never understood all the panic around it

I think a good chunk of it was the CDC randomly changing its recommendations with no real explanation.

At the beginning of the pandemic in the US, from January to May of 2020, there was a big campaign by the CDC to discourage people from wearing masks. I remember seeing various guest "medical experts" on the news claiming that people who wore masks were actually MORE LIKELY to contract COVID. At the same time, virtually every other country was encouraging or mandating masking.

Then June of 2020 came around, masks quickly became encouraged and then mandated. Fauci only made vague and nonsensical statements like "the science changed!" and "we're moving at the speed of science!" to explain the abrupt change in policy. As if there was ever any scientific data to suggest that COVID-19 was not capable of airborne transmission or that masks wouldn't help limit said transmission.

I get that there was a shortage of masks early on and the CDC was probably just trying to prevent panic buying (which occurred anyway, there were N95s selling on amazon for $40 per mask). The ridiculous claim that "masks make you more likely to get COVID" followed by a sudden requirement to wear said "COVID causing" masks completely destroyed public confidence and fueled all kinds of conspiracy theories.

hurrdurr57··on Boeing sales tumble as company gets no orders for 737 MAX for 2nd straight month
We have a pretty good idea, after the MCAS fiasco and now planes with missing bolts.
hurrdurr57··on Harvard's Largest Faculty Division Will No Longer Require Diversity Statements
The definition of "diversity" in the context of DEI is essentially "absolute ideological conformity".

So no, not requiring a pledge to reject all independent thought is not a move to the alt-right. This is a solid step away from totalitarianism and towards actual diversity.

hurrdurr57··on Harvard's Largest Faculty Division Will No Longer Require Diversity Statements
You sound a tad biased my friend.
hurrdurr57··on I connected Windows XP to the Internet; it was fine
I imagine if you used the initial release of Windows XP, without any service packs or updates, and you tried browsing the web with Internet Explorer 6, you'd get infected quite quickly.
hurrdurr57··on Why the New Human Case of Bird Flu Is So Alarming
And all the alarms about COVID, right? It was just one dude who got a little tear in his hazmat suit while working at the lab in Wuhan. Just one guy, no biggie.
hurrdurr57··on What AI thinks a beautiful woman looks like
Haven't you heard? Any and all "standards" are in fact maliciously contrived tools of the oppressors and are strictly utilized in order to oppress the oppressed.
hurrdurr57··on 'She Hooked Me': How an Online Scam Cost a Senior Citizen His Life's Savings
Being smart isn't a requirement to be a scammer. Many of them are just working off of scripts that someone much more intelligent and manipulative put together for them to use.

Being stupid also isn't necessarily a requirement for being scammed. If you can catch someone off guard or take advantage of an emotional vulnerability as in this case, you can exploit them.

hurrdurr57··on On Terry A. Davis
>Not to trivialise his achievement, but I'd be willing to wager any moderately competent systems programmer, if given 10+ years and no other commitments (work or family) could write a programming language, compiler, and real mode operating system for an x86_64 system.

But could they do it while suffering from severe psychosis and believing that they were being hunted by bioluminescent CIA operatives?

hurrdurr57··on AI-generated pornography will disrupt the adult content industry
Within 5 years, there will probably be an AI video generator that has been trained on pornography and can compete quality-wise with human made porn.

Within 10 years, you will have interactive AI generated VR porn where you can walk around the scene and interact with the performers.

Within 15 years, you can plug your brain into the porn matrix where you can taste, touch and smell your interactive porn.

Within 20 years, you will be a human battery for the machines.
