huntermonk··on Ask HN: Cheapest/easiest way to host a static site?
I use Site44. It's hosting synced to your Dropbox folder.

Just edit your index.html locally and it's pushed when your Dropbox syncs.

huntermonk··on Ask HN: What are the best advanced computer science courses online?
I did the [Computer Architecture and the Hardware/Software Interface](https://bradfieldcs.com/courses/architecture/) course and really enjoyed it.

I applied for the CSI program and really hope I get to do it this coming year. I got a ton of value out of the above course ($1800).

The CSI course is 10-20 hours a week for the year.

Lastly, up to this point I've been self-taught through Udemy. The problem with that is, sometimes, if you're stuck on something, it might take you 8 hours or more to figure it out. Where if you have someone knowledgeable, they can explain it in 15 minutes. Bradfield seems to do the best at that.

I've tried hiring a tutor outside of a MOOC and asking them for help, but it wasn't quite the same as a teacher who is actively engaged with the material.

huntermonk··on Facebook Q3 2020
Very true. The engineers in California (most of us) pay 40%.
huntermonk··on Ask HN: Best way to increase typing speed?
Going above 65 WPM will not cause injuries.

No problem!

Facebook vests quarterly - there actually isn't a one year cliff. In the last picture, salary + signing bonus + (4 * Quarterly RSU) + expected year end bonus gives you the total pay for the first year.
huntermonk··on I chose Facebook over Uber on 1/18/2019, which grossed me $92k.
It's not traditional actually. We vest quarterly, and I've sold my stock as soon as I've received it (two vest days so far). My third vesting is November 15th.

The last picture gives you my estimated total comp for the year, $343k. It will be something close to that unless $FB has a major change between now and next vesting date in February 2020.

I just checked Wealthfront and it says my rate is 44%. I'm working on increasing it to ~60%.
huntermonk··on I chose Facebook over Uber on 1/18/2019, which grossed me $92k.
No problem! I appreciate your support.

I've sold my stock as soon as it's vested. I'm already overexposed to Facebook.

Those are for four years - I'll edit the text to explain that.

From February until October 5th, I lived at [NEMA](https://www.rentnema.com/) downtown in SF. I was in a 450 sqft. apartment, and it was $3270/month. I absolutely hated it. NEMA was fine, but SF is not for me.

On October 5th, I just moved down to Menlo Park next to FB. I'm in a 3BR 1BA which is $1850/month. It's much better here.

huntermonk··on I chose Facebook over Uber on 1/18/2019, which grossed me $92k.
That's a good point - I added a small conclusion which possibly helps.
huntermonk··on I chose Facebook over Uber on 1/18/2019, which grossed me $92k.
No moral lesson here - I suppose my point is that you rarely get to have such a clear-cut comparison of what would've happened if you took the other path at the fork in the road.

I can see where it comes off as gloating, though. Do you think I should modify this to focus more on the fork aspect? (genuine question)

huntermonk··on I chose Facebook over Uber on 1/18/2019, which grossed me $92k.
When I chose Facebook, I believed that Uber was a better offer. A $100B+ valuation for them seemed plausible to me. I thought I was going to be making $35-55k less.

So, I actually was not a genius here. It was total luck.

People rarely examine their non-decisions ("what would my life be like if I went left at that fork in the road?"), and I thought this was a particularly clear-cut example of that.

huntermonk··on Dissent at Facebook over hands-off stance on political ads
I'm not sure why this is getting downvoted. This is correct.

I've never worked somewhere where challenging leadership is so encouraged.

huntermonk··on 42 is found to be the sum of three cubes
Thanks, this is helpful.

Why do we care if every integer not equal to 4 or 5 modulo 9 is the sum of three cubes? Just for fun?

huntermonk··on Cities and Ambition (2008)
I grew up next to Dallas and just moved from Austin a few months ago. Both cities value relaxation quite a bit.

Naturally, there are motivated people and pockets (that will probably comment on this), but those are exceptions. That's what caused me to move.

I feel the same way. In Sam Altman's most recent interview he talked about hours of use per day being an important metric for a new product.

It seems like the first high-use product in this category will be a lightweight regular looking set of glasses that simply displays your notifications.

Then in the future, add a camera to display overlays on the real world.

huntermonk··on GitHub lost $66M in nine months of 2016
> "The income statement shows a loss of $66 million in the first three quarters of this year. That’s more than twice as much lost in any nine-month time frame by Twilio Inc., another maker of software tools founded the same year as GitHub."

These sort of statements are a little annoying. I understand that Bloomberg has to write for a less technical audience, but the writer must know this isn't an accurate comparison.

huntermonk··on Browsers, not apps, are the future of mobile
I agree.

Mobile is already maturing. By the time web technology is good enough to create a native-feeling experience, we will be on to the next runtime.

(Disclaimer: I do iOS consulting, so hugely biased)

huntermonk··on How to Build Muscle
> "In other words, the majority of women prefer the left side to the right side"

These sort of statements are misleading - women who are more physically attractive (unfortunately, what most males prefer) tend to prefer the model on the right (in my experience).

huntermonk··on I Am Sam Altman, President of YC Group. AMA
He compiled a list of recommended readings for the class here (http://startupclass.samaltman.com/lists/readings/), and in the morning macro it was stated that "We’re going to replace the Fellowship with a much larger MOOC launching next year.".

I know that's not what you're looking for, but at least it gets us close!

huntermonk··on Ask HN: What's the best way to learn about the blockchain?
That was excellent, thank you.
huntermonk··on Palantir raises $680M
Ah ok - that's what I heard through Capital Factory. However, I can't imagine it would be more than 2 (you said a couple) orders of magnitude off.

Do you know approximately what the amount was?

huntermonk··on Palantir raises $680M
I see what Joseph is saying about that macro trend. In Austin, RideScout (Kayak.com for transportation options) just sold for ~$100m to Daimler AG with only tens of thousands of user.

The importance to Daimler was seeing all the driving and traveling data for each user.
