hummerbliss··on Show HN: I vibecoded a 35k LoC recipe app
I have very similar experience.

After seeing how people like Andrej Karparthy used vibe coding to generate applications https://x.com/karpathy/status/1903671737780498883?s=61 I realize that

you need to be clear on what you want the LLM to do break down the tasks and give byte sized tasks to llm to do specific thing and sometimes I had to tell it not go and change random files because it found the need to refactor them.

hummerbliss··on Guide to mechanical keyboards
I use split keyboards and finding a mechanical split keyboard without the ortho linear configuration seem to be hard. I just want a mechanical split keyboard with hot swappable keys with staggered (normal) keyboard.
hummerbliss··on Apple partly halts Beeper's iMessage app again, suggesting a long fight ahead
(from India). We have huge SMS spam. Significant spam for me ismarketing SMS from companies. They automatically sign your number up for example when you make a purchase/at POS. No opt-out - its eternal

We do have facility for DND with Deparatment of Telecom but seems to come up short as mine is in DND but receive several messages and calls through out the day.

hummerbliss··on Ask HN: Good practices for my first C project?
I would also recommend CodeChecker (static analysis tool - open source) or if you end up having to use gcc use gcc's -fanalyzer option for static analysis.

I find that gcc is a version or two behind clang for new compiler diagnostics and static analysis features (purely anecdotal so please take it with pinch of salt).

hummerbliss··on Ask HN: Which distro do you use? (2023)
Debian at home. Ubuntu at work(hoping to switch to Debian soon). Both of them are headless (so not as Desktop Environment but ssh to for development work).
hummerbliss··on Tabby: A terminal for a more modern age
ditto for me, the font rendering for kitty and alacritty (I tried various fonts + knobs macos_thicken_font, text_composition_stratgegy ...) and they just don't appear as crisp as fonts in iterm2 on macos
hummerbliss··on Show HN: Yet another macOS ChatGPT app
I would like to pay for the convenience of the app with bring my own keys.

For people who already have subscription this would be useful. Thanks in advance !

hummerbliss··on Popular Pirate Bay proxy site disappears from GitHub
Please can you tell me if you are using any package managers for *arr services like swizzin/onebox ?
hummerbliss··on Signal says it won’t compromise on encryption
Proposed law draft (I hate that news outlets do not link to the law they discuss) https://dot.gov.in/sites/default/files/Draft%20Indian%20Tele...
hummerbliss··on Signal says it won’t compromise on encryption
Its was a proposed law (to solicit feedback). Signal is not exiting but would exit if such law comes to India.

https://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/govt-proposes-law-...

But Telecom Authority of India rules out any immediate intervention.

https://tech.hindustantimes.com/tech/news/trai-rules-out-reg...

I couldn't quote from the article here but looks like they are going to wait till clarity emerges from International jurisdiction.

hummerbliss··on Ask HN: How do you stop time wasting on the internet?
I fould book Deep Work by Cal Newport enlightning on how to cultivate quitting social media (and other shallow work) and develop habit of deep work.

How to Work Deeply ?

How to decide on your depth philosophy ?

Ritualize your deep work

Make Grand Gestures

Embrace Boredom

Drain the shallows

Quantifying the depth of the work you do.

hummerbliss··on Ask HN: What's your note-taking methodology?
Apple Notes for personal stuff (lists like groceries lists, TODOs, insurance details, bank account numbers, what did I store in my attic, my vehicle registration details …etc) - pretty much anything that I need to recall.

Joplin for work/learning related stuff (organized by topic). For any topic that I work on, I create a page with links, notes, snippets of code …etc.

hummerbliss··on Ask HN: What’s your favorite tool for planning your day?
This is exactly mysetup !
hummerbliss··on Ask HN: How do you take notes throughout your work day?
+1 for Joplin, I use it for logging my work day. I dump the information in JIRA task I work on and have highlights and other related notes in Joplin, although I wish Joplin has a native support for calendar (similar to https://zim-wiki.org).
hummerbliss··on Ask HN: What was the biggest leadership challenge of your career?
"Learning to let my go of my ego and trust…”

This is the quality I learnt to look for in a leader (I am not a leader but worked under few good ones).

I also noticed how good leaders never take things personally. They quickly move on and not hold grudge. I am amazed how good leaders are able to do that and in doing so inspire me to do the same.

hummerbliss··on Software/Services Thanksgiving
I am extremely thankful for mosh. Made life easier to be able to develop across high latency links (sometimes you don't have a choice).
hummerbliss··on Ask HN: What is the best way to target restaurants and small businesses?
Swiggy (a deliver app in India) has very nice bot feature for handling most of the queries.

You don't have to type but select from bunch of choices and then the bot automatically does the needful.

Examples

Report an item is missing from the order. The bot pops ups the list - asks the user to select which item is missing - refunds automatically.

for most use cases I would rather have the bot do the work for me than having to talk to a rep.

hummerbliss··on Ask HN: Do you still use RSS?
Yes, thats the primary way I consume web (including HN). If a website doesn't have an RSS feed (or feedly doesn't have it) then I don't care about that site.
hummerbliss··on Vote Today on Senate H-1B Bill
Very well put.
hummerbliss··on QEMU VM Escape
Am genuinely curious. Why can't C language be extended to do this ?
hummerbliss··on PacVim – PacVim is a game that teaches you vim commands
Vi (or emacs) have steep learning curve with immense benefits for rest of a programmer/editor life.
hummerbliss··on Unidirectional Network
How do they assure unidirectional transfer with out any feedback in reverse direction (TCP Acks for example ?).
hummerbliss··on Ask HN: What's your catch-all note taker?
I recently started using Zim Desktop Wiki (http://zim-wiki.org) for the sole reason being that it saves them in text files and the obvious advantages that come with it (sync, no lock-in) etc. I use them across mac, windows, and linux machines. I couldn't find an iPhone app.
hummerbliss··on India's workhorse rocket fails for the first time in decades
A society should progress and then its shortcomings have a way of solving themselves. Not a zerosum game.
hummerbliss··on Working from home may hurt your career
Eventually you would meet people and discuss technical stuff and unofficial mentor/mentee relationships may develop. Most places won't have an assigned mentor. Your boss (if he/she is technical) may become a mentor but it doesn't always happen.

Coffee/Break room chats and other social gatherings would help in building rapport with other devs and eventually you would be learning from each other. Unless the place you work is extremely toxic, I would say just give it time. My 2c.

hummerbliss··on Ask HN: What's your backup solution?
1. I have a synology which acts as central store for everything. 2. Everything on synology (except for videos) gets backed up to crashplan. 3. Once every few months I backup synology to my 5TB external drive.

I hate to loose any file even if its not important :) I still have files from the floppy disk era.

hummerbliss··on Ask HN: Good email host?
fastmail - Been using their service for couple of years. Here is how I migrated from yahoo and gmail.

1. Bought fastmail service and a personal domain. 2. Import yahoo and gmail email (they warn you to use it as onetime service and not as backup). 3. Autoforward all my gmail and yahoo to my fastmail. 4. As you get emails, you can make decision of unsubscribing/changing email addresses of various services.
