huhkerrf··on How your high school affects your chances of UC Admission
It's all publicly funded universities in Texas, not just the UT system.

In other words: you've just pissed off a lot of Aggies grouping them in with, ahem, tu.

huhkerrf··on Do not mistake a resilient global economy for populist success
No, it shouldn't tell us everything, but if someone makes a very data-oriented claim ("millenials will be the first generation poorer than their parents") and you return with data that shows the opposite, you can make a claim that the data is poorly gathered, etc.

But pivoting to the "but it's not my lived experience, bro" is weak.

If you made the claim that "millenials have it harder than their parent" then we're talking something where experience can be more useful.

huhkerrf··on Do not mistake a resilient global economy for populist success
What? Access to knowledge was better 3-4 decades ago? You're telling me that people had better access to knowledge in 1986 than they do today?

Infant mortality was 10.4 per 1,000 live births in 1986 in the US. It was 5.5 I'm 2023.

Life expectancy was 74. Now it's 78.

The crime rate peaked in the US in 1991.

Life isn't perfect now. Housing needs to be a lot more affordable, for one. University costs in the US are insane, for another.

But to paint this as no progress? Come on.

huhkerrf··on Do not mistake a resilient global economy for populist success
That's silly. People have wrong impressions about a lot of things. Your "lived experience" (you can just say experience, okay?) can be wrong.
huhkerrf··on Do not mistake a resilient global economy for populist success
Yeah, but how does millennial median wealth compare to boomer median wealth? That's the question.

I'm happy to be proven wrong.

huhkerrf··on Do not mistake a resilient global economy for populist success
> Don't forget that Millennials are the first generation to be poorer than their parents in a long time...

This is simply not true. At some point, we do need to rely on data other than "lived experience," which compares one's quality of life at 22 to someone's quality of life at 50.

"Younger Americans (millennials and Gen Zers) owned $1.23 for every $1 of wealth owned by Gen Xers at the same age."

"Younger Americans (millennials and Gen Zers) owned $1.35 for every $1 of wealth owned by baby boomers at the same age."

It's not that hard to find the data. Subscription fees are the great majority of WSJ overall revenue. ~$500 million of $586 million total.

huhkerrf··on That viral Reddit post about food delivery apps was an AI scam
It was a good indication of how things like conspiracy theories spread.

He gave his notice on NYE? Oh, he's probably just fudging that so he's not caught. He doesn't care about getting caught but he's on a burner laptop? Oh, people do weird things when they're stressed. And on and on.

Then, of course, the ultimate fallback: Well it sounds like something they would do. So even if most of this is made up, the bad things are still probably true.

huhkerrf··on That viral Reddit post about food delivery apps was an AI scam
Is this the same publication that reported on the post without any hedge whatsoever?

Yes, it was: https://www.theverge.com/transportation/853018/a-developer-f...

"A developer for a ‘major food delivery app’ says the ‘algorithms are rigged against you."

"There’s some debate as to whether the claims are as bad as the OP makes them seem, but it seems like there’s general agreement that the gist of the post is legit."

And, yet, they don't even mention it in their original post. They haven't issued a correction. Isn't this journalism 101?

huhkerrf··on Murder-suicide case shows OpenAI selectively hides data after users die
This is what scares me the most about LLMs in my usage.

Not that I'll go crazy and kill others or myself, but that I will be deluded by the LLM telling me what I want to hear. Even though I know the risks.

I'm going through a small claims court level disagreement with a business right now, and ChatGPT has been on the face incredibly helpful for me to find information about the applicable laws and whether I have a case. On the other hand, I don't feel confident at all that it would tell me otherwise.

huhkerrf··on One Number I Trust: Plain-Text Accounting for a Multi-Currency Household
I assume Buckets does that because YNAB no longer allows you to take from next month.
huhkerrf··on One Number I Trust: Plain-Text Accounting for a Multi-Currency Household
Another unexpected side effect is that it made me "excited" to spend money when I had saved up for it. Before it would be a back and forth, "should I buy this? I've wanted it, but I could use the money for something else..."

With YNAB, it's been "hell yeah, I saved up for this and now I get to buy it."

huhkerrf··on One Number I Trust: Plain-Text Accounting for a Multi-Currency Household
I regularly pay with 3 currencies, and YNAB isn't great for that, but it ends up working out because 95% of my spend is in just one.

But, you're right, I have no need for tracking stocks, as I only check in once a year or so, and I can't imagine YNAB would manage that well.

huhkerrf··on One Number I Trust: Plain-Text Accounting for a Multi-Currency Household
I get that people on here don't like subscriptions, and I understand why, but I've been using You Need a Budget for well over a decade, and it is probably the last subscription I'd ever give up.

The automatic import of expenses is so valuable for my family and keeping track of how much we've spent and how much we have left for the month.

We used the fixed-cost version for years beyond when it was officially supported, and it didn't have the automated import, and I don't think I could ever go back to a system that didn't. There were always a few days a month, at least, when I wasn't exactly sure where we were in our expenses.

huhkerrf··on Real Biological Clock Is You're Going to Die (2018)
Plenty of people have kids before then and they work out fine. I'm not saying that if you're truly destitute it's a good idea to have kids, but the only people I hear complaining about not being financially ready for kids are those who are objectively well off.

> designed to keep engineers far from thinking about impact on real people

Why do we think engineers are some special class of people who can't do bad things?

huhkerrf··on I rebooted my social life
> But they will be unlikely to write a post about that.

I don't know what you're talking about. People loooove talking about how hell is other people or how they'd rather be curled up on the couch, how relieved they are when others cancel plans at the last minute.

huhkerrf··on I rebooted my social life
Most of the comments here are about joining groups, and rightfully so, as most people are really in the basement when it comes to having friends, especially after your 20s.

But what the author did (organizing drinks) reminds me a lot of a great podcast I heard about putting together cocktail parties, and the social benefits: https://www.artofmanliness.com/people/social-skills/2-hour-c...

It's probably not for everyone, as it seems like a lot of work, and it might be too regimented for many, but I've wanted to do it for a while. Maybe this is the year.

huhkerrf··on I canceled my book deal
Maybe, but it sure reads like he was dragging his feet long before that.

Considering all the confusion and questions in this comment section, maybe he should have been more open to an editor.

huhkerrf··on I rebooted my social life
Don't go friend hunting, then. Go activity hunting, and if you make friends out of it, all the better.
huhkerrf··on I rebooted my social life
> I honestly wish social clubs were a thing, and you would get introduced to people from all walks of life

They are. Elks, Knights of Columbus, etc. Not as popular with the younger crowd, but nothing is stopping you from joining or starting your own.

As for the point around feeling like you have to talk about rock climbing all day: you don't. Rock climbing is just the entry point, which allows for a shared conversation topic before you branch into other things.

huhkerrf··on Children and Helical Time
> This is a depressing thought to consider in (linear) middle age, but it is hard to escape the feeling that it is essentially true. Childhood memories have an intensity and a vibrancy that it is difficult for the rest of life to match.

This is just not my experience at all. I had a great childhood, but ask me about the most vibrant moments, and very few of them came before I was 18. The births of my children, my wedding, meeting my wife, lazy afternoons in college...

huhkerrf··on I canceled my book deal
I'm almost certain I know the publisher he's talking about in the blog post, and I can see why it didn't work out. You have to be willing to be open to feedback while also being able to push back on that feedback. You also have to accept that you are committed to certain outcomes.

The publisher he worked with will push you but also make a better book in the end. You have to be willing to do your part.

(Not naming the publisher because I don't want to out myself.)

huhkerrf··on I canceled my book deal
To be frank, after reading your blog post, while I am interested in the topic you're writing on, there's no way I'm putting down a pre-order.

If you can't finish a partial manuscript when you have people reaching out to you and reviewers ready to provide feedback, how confident can I be that you'll actually write when you have a faceless pre-order instead? Or will life just get in the way again?

We're here to discuss topics. If you are going to say that an iPad is a necessary tool for raising children, at least stand behind that point of view instead of removing it as soon as people disagree with you.
