It's clear from the first paragraph. That's not an accident.

If I want to read ChatGPT output, just give me the prompt. I remember when OpenAI thought GPT-2 (!) was too dangerous to release. But they have no problem unleashing this slop on us.

huhkerrf··on Why is Singapore no longer "cool"?
This really does describe the expat in Dubai mindset pretty well, sadly.
huhkerrf··on Why is Singapore no longer "cool"?
It's strange that you mention the religious part of UAE making you uneasy, and not the modern day slavery.

> Ariana and her mother, Stephanie, were detained on Dec. 1, when they went for one of their regular check-ins at an ICE office in New York City’s Federal Plaza, which are required as they wait for a decision on their asylum case. Stephanie had come to the U.S. with experience working as an accountant and, after securing her work permit, she had finally found a job at a local import business where she could put that experience to use. They had been regularly checking in with ICE for years without incident. But after mom and daughter showed up for their 8 a.m. ICE appointment, they were told they couldn’t leave this time and were on a plane to Dilley by 6 that evening, without being given a chance to call their family.

I can see the argument that you shouldn't be in the country illegally, and if you are then you are subject to being deported. But that's clearly not what's happening here. Many of these people did everything right and they followed the laws. Now the laws are suddenly changing and this administration treats them like criminals for it. It's cruel.

Things are, at least, getting better with the passage of right to try laws: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Right-to-try_law

These drugs seem to all be only allowed after Phase 1 trials, so still not quite at the level you're describing here.

> skiing enthusiast banned by court order in 1999 from posting on the Usenet discussion group "rec.skiing.alpine", after engaging in a flame war with other online posters. The heated exchanges lasted for months, eventually escalating into death threats, until a police detective from Seattle posted a request for all involved to calm down. All involved did except Abraham...

I'm sorry, this was probably annoying to all involved, but also so hilarious. Not least of which picturing a detective, who joined the force thinking he was going to solve murders and maybe even get a lead on D.B. Cooper sighing as he posted on a message board.

huhkerrf··on First, make me care
"First, make me care" is exactly right. But I also know that anytime you have narrative non-fiction on here, someone without fail argues that the author didn't get straight into the details.

I really have a hard time understanding why people post videos of themselves crying. Maybe I'm already old in my 30s, but it's hard for me to wrap my head around it.

Like, I get that at some level it's fishing for sympathy and pity, but your real friends are going to be there whether they have a video of you crying or not. Everyone else just... doesn't matter that much?

Trees are big in the Torah and Bible generally. The Bible Project did a whole series on trees in the Bible. You've got the Tree of Life, the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, the cross, the tree in the book of Jonah, the fig tree, the parable of the vine and the branches, etc..

It all makes sense for a religion steeped in a desert culture. Trees are (relatively) rare, and what they offer is incredibly important and life giving.

huhkerrf··on White House defends sharing AI image showing arrested woman crying
This is just so absolutely stupid. This group of people have somehow got it in their heads that their primary job is owning the libs, and not governing.

Independent of your views on immigration, or law and order, or anything. Juvenile shit like this does absolutely nothing to advance any policy goals.

Even worse, why should you average normie trust any image that comes out from the White House? If there's a serious national security issue, why are we going to trust a group of people who are willing to doctor a photo for such stupid ends?

I mean, it's not a typo, but it's also misleading. It wasn't an active campaign for 202 years. It was largely forgotten for most of that time.

It's still a lot of money from a donor or PAC for this kind of change. I find it remarkably hard to believe that lines moving on Intrade would have a bigger impact than an equivalent amount of money spent on battleground state television ads.

The first comment in your link says the opposite:

> Doing my sad job of having to defend Trump (sadly):

> He did not "kept" for himself. FIFA that decided to keep it in the white house

> It is normal for champions to receive and keep a replica during and after the awards. Happens, for example, in the World Cup, Champions League and Libertadores.

> Probably, FIFA will take the trophy back eventually and keep it in Switzerland just like the WC one.

> This is political tabloid click/ragebait.

It's such a joke that we're even having to discuss this. Has there ever been such a thin-skinned, self-absorbed leader of a major power before? Even his biggest fans have to admit, if only to themselves, that he acts like a toddler.

huhkerrf··on Ask HN: How can we solve the loneliness epidemic?
Love Bombing can be a real thing. Being kind and welcoming to others is not it.

We don't need to pathologize completely normal, and healthy, behaviours.

huhkerrf··on Ask HN: How can we solve the loneliness epidemic?
You missed the point of my comment.

My comment was saying that the people who _don't_ should learn how to do so. It's a skill like any others, and what you're proposing contributes to people being lonely. Instead of making connections with people around them, who they didn't choose, they hold out for some platonic ideal of a friend who they have the right amount of things in common with.

You see it in this comment section where you've got people shooting down every idea that people put out there. Oh, I can't go to the gym, I don't like working out. Oh, I don't want to join clubs because they don't have my interests. But I also don't want to be lonely, so I guess I'm just stuck.

huhkerrf··on Ask HN: How can we solve the loneliness epidemic?
You don't have to be a believer to go to church. Have an open mind, don't belittle it to the people there just like you wouldn't belittle someone's interior decorating who invited you into their home, and don't hog all of the potato salad at the post-service lunch, and you'll be okay.
huhkerrf··on Ask HN: How can we solve the loneliness epidemic?
The great thing about the comment you're replying to is that it has a list of suggestions. So you've got two options: you can get angry that one of them doesn't cater to you, or you could skip that one and look at the others that do.
huhkerrf··on Ask HN: How can we solve the loneliness epidemic?
> where you can expect a modicum, possibly even a seeming profusion, of welcome. This is their hook.

Do you think that, possibly, they're really just happy to see you?

huhkerrf··on Ask HN: How can we solve the loneliness epidemic?
The world could use a lot more of learning to like, or even love, the people you didn't choose.

That's how it was forever. Now it's not, and we're talking about a loneliness epidemic. I don't think those things are unrelated.

huhkerrf··on Ask HN: How can we solve the loneliness epidemic?
I'm willing to bet that the libraries near the person you're talking to have all but maybe a cafe. I mean, I've never seen a library in the US that didn't have internet access and a place to meet and that weren't nonprofit.
huhkerrf··on Ask HN: How can we solve the loneliness epidemic?
I mean, the very first paragraph of your own link says: "However, subsequent investigations revealed that the extent of public apathy was exaggerated." and the second paragraph says, "Researchers have since uncovered major inaccuracies in the Times article, and police interviews revealed that some witnesses had attempted to contact authorities."
huhkerrf··on Why Real Life is better than IRC (2000)
There has been a lot of bad things about the technology of the past 30 years, but I refuse to say that things were fantastic pre-Internet. The fact that I can listen to any music I want for less than it cost me to buy a CD in 1995, not even adjusted for inflation, is amazing. The massive CD book I carried around is definitely nostalgia.

Or, I can think of something, and find the answer quickly. I can make friends with people (or argue with them) across continents.

Still, there are things that I do miss that were objectively "worse." Like there only being a few dozen channels, and cable TV being less important, so you knew everyone was watching the same thing. There seemed to be more of a shared culture.

Context clues matter--note that we're both talking about Aggies and that tu is lower-cased.

They do that to imply that "varsity" is not the University _of_ Texas.

As with lots of things coming from College Station, you just sort of have to accept it.
