huangc10··on Tested: The truth behind the MacBook Pro's 'terrible' battery life
After going through a few of these articles, this is my very general takeaway summary:

"The new MacBook Pro's battery life is not as good as the previous generation but is still decent for its class. The decrease in battery life, compared with the older model, is mostly due to a brighter screen, better cpu/gpu, and slightly smaller battery. Ultimately, it is up to the user and the user's use case to gauge the actual battery life and tradeoffs of upgrading to the new MBP."

huangc10··on A machine will serve you a free Big Mac
Talked about Big Macs yesterday with co-workers (yes, of course we work in an open-space office...). Wanted to share this video of McDonalds Exec Chef Dan Coudreaut making a Big Mac: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcu4Bj3xEyI
huangc10··on Changing San Francisco is foreseen as a haven for wealthy and childless (1981)
Agreed. It's easier to blame what's in front of our eyes and trending. However, I wouldn't go as far as saying the tech industry had nothing to do with it. It's all relative.
huangc10··on Changing San Francisco is foreseen as a haven for wealthy and childless (1981)
> Soaring housing costs, urban violence, shifting ethnic patterns and an increase in childless adults living together may be turning San Francisco, which the Chamber of Commerce likes to call ''everybody's favorite city,'' into a haven for the young, the old, the wealthy and the childless.

Love reading posts of old articles from the 80s and 90s. It's like nothing much has changed over the past 30 or so years. Except the average housing price has gone up from ~$100,000 to ~$1,000,000 (you know, cuz of inflation and stuff...)

huangc10··on [dead]
Clickbait title. Can someone please change it to "Jack Ma says..."?

Also, it's difficult for Jack Ma to understand what happened in 9/11 because it didn't happen in China. It was a different time in 2001.

huangc10··on NHTSA’s full investigation into Tesla’s Autopilot shows 40% crash rate reduction
Can anyone who is in the industry comment on how Autopilot performs in poor weather (ie. flash floods, thunderstorms, snowstorms etc...)

All I can find from the article about weather was in section 3.1:

> The manual includes several additional warnings related to system limitations, use near pedestrians and cyclists, and use on winding roads with sharp curves or with slippery surfaces or poor weather conditions. The system does not prevent operation on any road types.

huangc10··on Welcoming Fabric to Google
That's more of a consumer facing blog it feels like. Maybe here? Not sure. https://developers.googleblog.com/
huangc10··on Welcoming Fabric to Google
I know it won't happen but I wish they'd stay with the dark/Twitter blue theme.
huangc10··on Welcoming Fabric to Google
Actually, the entire platform is called Fabric while Crashlytics is only a part of the platform (albeit the main part...).

They've just kept the website as-is since being acquired by Twitter and integrated into the larger Twitter products portfolio.

It is confusing at first though.

huangc10··on Welcoming Fabric to Google
agreed
huangc10··on Welcoming Fabric to Google
I think you're right but it's weird how this post is coming from the Firebase blog not a main Google products blog (is there one..?). I guess it makes sense...
huangc10··on Welcoming Fabric to Google
The title is a bit ambiguous. From my understanding, Google (Firebase) acquired Fabric from Twitter (not necessarily "joining").

Fabric is one of the top dev tools I use for iOS. I wonder what kind of change is in store...

huangc10··on Ask HN: If you could live and work somewhere, where would it be?
This makes me want to pack my bags and head east...Good for you man!
huangc10··on Why I only work remotely
After reading the article, one word comes in mind: flexibility. It's really about you and your employer/fellow employees coming together to find out what works and what doesn't. Everyone is different and everyone has different needs.

The author talks a lot of "I". "I am this...", "I cannot this..." etc. While these articles are interesting, I would love to hear the counter-side.

Is the overall efficiency of the team lacking because some people are full-time remotely? How do the people who go to the office feel about working with the remote engineers?

huangc10··on Ten Years at Google
Really? I found it quite refreshing. I'm tired of reading articles about people's experiences at so-and-so company for so-and-so years. Anyone working there for 10+ years can write about that.

It's awesome that Neil did something he's proud of and shared it on his personal blog. Good for him.

1000 dollars isn't that bad for a necklace right? What about wedding rings for example.
huangc10··on Pokemon Go probably didn't make its users more active
> That first week, the activity increase was significant—a boost of 955 steps, or an estimated 11 minutes of additional walking a day, according to study author Katherine Howe.

Isn't that already making users more active?

> Significant, maybe, but the step increase is (unsurprisingly) much smaller than that generated by other walking "interventions," like the use of a Fitbit.

Pokemon GO is free. Not everyone can buy a Fitbit or other walking "interventions"...

Not a big Pokemon GO fan but I'd like to think it did make people more active even if it was just for a week.

huangc10··on You might not need that $15K coding bootcamp
and guess what? You don't need a website either.

Step 1: Get a copy of "The C Programming Language" by Dennis Ritchie, Brian Kernighan.

Step 2: Learn the fundamentals

Step 3: Master other languages

Edit...I know there's been a lot of negativity towards my comment and I can understand why. I like to keep my comments simple and leave it to the reader's interpretation. However, it seems my comment was too simple...

Let's focus on step 2, as step 1 and 3 are out of the scope of my comment. "Learn the fundamentals". As with any profession, trade, basketball player, high-rise building, pyramid, etc. you need to have solid fundamentals. What does that mean for programmers and developers? It means understanding computer theory. It means learning about the stack. It means learning the difference between big endian vs little endian. Learning memory allocation in C for an array is every bit as important as learning how to var arr = [].

Sure you can skip the fundamentals (hard stuff?) and go straight to high level languages but should you?

huangc10··on Canadian journalist's detention at US border raises press freedom alarms
As a Canadian living in the US, I've had a lot of trouble with US Customs at both airports (YVR, YYZ) and border crossing (Vancouver, Niagara).

However, I don't deny that it is at times necessary for Customs officers to be more strict. I would rather the officers do their jobs correctly and prevent incidents (drug smuggling, terrorism etc.) from happening.

Although at times they do seem to be unnecessarily aggressive.
