huangc10··on Coinbase Billionaire Brian Armstrong’s Plan to Make Crypto Safe for All
What, you never heard of the tres comas club?
huangc10··on Leader-Follower (1999)
thanks! I think you're right. I will give the book a read.
huangc10··on Leader-Follower (1999)
I don't disagree with this, but the specific PM that everyone likes to work with doesn't persuade either. It's hard to explain exactly what this PM does but I've almost never seen anything like it in my life.
huangc10··on Leader-Follower (1999)
I mostly agree with the concepts mentioned in the article but on a high-level, I do not. I truly believe some people are born to lead while others are not (even though everyone certainly has the potential to be).

For ex. at my work place, there is a PM which I truly believe is a pure leader. Every single person on the PM's team (engineer, designer, marketing, and other PMs) likes working with the PM. It's uncanny and I have a hard time figuring out why. I suspect it's natural charisma and the way the PM leads without ordering. To counter that, another PM recently joined the company and this new PM is the exact opposite. The new PM's interactions are like orders or commands. To me, this new PM (however educated the PM is...), has already lost my trust after a month. Does anyone else have similar experiences?

huangc10··on Ask HN: Joining Big Tech in One’s 40s
I hate these questions because it honestly puts me off when I think about my future. It makes me scared of being old. 43 isn't even that old (isn't retiring age 65...?) and you seem to be confused what your profession is. I don't want to be in that position.

If you're 43, you should know what you want to do. If you want to code, go for a senior/principal programming lead position. If you want to manage, go for a managerial position. You're asking a question a 20 yr old should be asking which makes me extremely worried what the future has in store for me. I hope that when I turn 40 in 2029, I could still do what I love (which happens to be in programming), and not have to fret if I need to change professions or not...this is the way.

*Edit, I hope I don't sound like a jerk, but this is really what I feel. I hope when millennials like me start to hit 40, we can change the tech industry's age distribution and we no longer have to worry about problems like this.

huangc10··on The Light Phone
ITT? This isn't Reddit. Of course people are going to talk about missing features.

If the point is to be reachable by a loved one in an emergency and nothing else, I can think of a hundred other options that don't cost $350. I think that's what you meant.

huangc10··on The Light Phone
I'd rather buy a Supreme brick than this. All jokes aside, I'd rather buy a Nokia phone than this...
huangc10··on Flutter vs. Other Mobile Development Frameworks: A UI and Performance Experiment
I scanned through your two articles (part 1 and part 2) and wanted to read more about scope. Although I do find your experiments interesting, scope is really the question. At small scale (single developer with a few view controllers and models), your experiments might make sense but when talking about scaling, I don't think your UI and performance results are relavent. How does a project with hundreds of views, models and libraries scale with Flutter vs. native iOS vs. React Native? How easy is the codebase to browse and learn from 0 to 100? Sure, one can use Flutter when they're playing with a project but when you scale towards 5-20 mobile developers, does it make sense? That's more of an interesting question to me...
huangc10··on What are those grids of glass in the sidewalk and why are they purple?
I walk past these all the time thinking they're just interesting design patterns on the floor...how dumb of me. Insightful article and fun read.
huangc10··on Logitech MX Master 3 vs. 2S Teardown
I 100% agree with you. Since using the MX Revolution in the late 2000s, I couldn't go back to anything. For me, MX Revolution - G500 - G500 (literally 2 for almost 8 years) - and just this year, the MX Master 2S. Long live the free scroll.
huangc10··on Launch HN: Buy Me a Coffee (YC W19) – Give your audience a way to thank you
Agreed. This is a little weird. I wonder if they got YC's "OK" to use the Launch HN tag with (YC W19) for a product that was not actually within the batch. It's a little deceiving.
huangc10··on Ask HN: What are some resources to improve speaking skills?
All good, I get it. Like I said before, it makes sense and sometimes drugs is the solution. For ex. (since I've been watching a lot of baseball recently), Roman could be the go-to solution to ED. I just find it amusing that there is a drug to help with anything/everything.
huangc10··on Ask HN: What are some resources to improve speaking skills?
So to sum up your solution in one word, drugs. Nothing against it Propranolol but I just found it amusing drugs can almost be the solution to a lot of biological problems.
huangc10··on Ask HN: Ultrawide vs. Dual Monitors
haha I see what you mean. I usually keep my monitors for 5 years. I guess if I get the Dell, I can say $1119.99/ (365*5) = ~$0.61. Good idea!
huangc10··on Ask HN: Ultrawide vs. Dual Monitors
Interesting. What do you mean by $4/day? In power consumption cost-wise? Never factored that into my decision but very interesting...The Dell U3818DW is on my radar.
huangc10··on Ask HN: Ultrawide vs. Dual Monitors
This might be the way I go...
huangc10··on Ask HN: Ultrawide vs. Dual Monitors
Cool, thanks! I'm actually still keeping my dual monitor setup at work and similar to you, at times I move the mount so I can show co-workers some code or UI.

I'm looking to update my setup at home to maximize productivity. Interesting points you brought up!

huangc10··on Ask HN: Ultrawide vs. Dual Monitors
Agreed. With triple monitors, it was annoying that I had to move my head back and forth. My preference so far has been with dual monitors. How about productivity? About the same?
huangc10··on Ask HN: Successful one-person online businesses?
It's not just really hard. I think the hard part most people can get by. It's the luck part that a lot of us are missing. You have to be lucky enough to be that 1 person who catches the train at the right time.

Imagine the odds of that. That's what gets me. It's not necessarily how hard you work. It's the window of opportunity that most people miss.

huangc10··on Ask HN: Successful one-person online businesses?
1500% wow
huangc10··on Reversing Safeway's private APIs to automate coupon collection
What a blast from the past. I am actually Canadian but have been living in the Bay Area for over 10 years so I've already forgotten that you can collect Air Miles through Safeway (which was why I clicked on this article in the first place thinking of the .ca)

I don't think Air Miles are completely useless. I do remember redeeming air miles at least once in the past for a one-way trip somewhere...

huangc10··on Reversing Safeway's private APIs to automate coupon collection
On a slightly unrelated note, I was trying to figure out why this guy is using a .ca domain when I realized, his name is Jon Luca. At first I thought his name was Jon Lu (and therefore asian). Good use of domain name.
huangc10··on Amazon Echo Loop
I actually like this a lot tbh. I only wish it looked better but worth a try.

Been looking to try some new IoT stuff.

huangc10··on The boring technology behind a one-person Internet company (2018)
I'm going to go out on a limb here and confidently say he's doing fine. As he mentioned, he rented an expensive one person WeWork office in SF (when he doesn't even have to).
huangc10··on The boring technology behind a one-person Internet company (2018)
TBH, this is more inspiring than I thought. I thought this would be some BS article about promoting your company but turns out, it was a fun and inspiring read.

My dream is to find a good idea and work solo. It is a little harder as a mobile engineer but you're right as you mention in the blog. There are technology nowadays that help me with backend/dev tools.

Cheers.

huangc10··on The Cloud
As someone mentioned, YMMV. That's all I have to say. Fun side project and learning experience though.
huangc10··on Amazon Accidentally Sold $13k Camera Gear for $100 on Prime Day
Actually, if you read the article, one item was $13K. That item could have been ordered a number of times for $100.
huangc10··on Amazon Accidentally Sold $13k Camera Gear for $100 on Prime Day
The deal (price mistake?) was only available for like 1 hr around 10 or 11 pm PST Monday night...but enough time for hundreds of mistaken orders.
huangc10··on Amazon Accidentally Sold $13k Camera Gear for $100 on Prime Day
They will cancel majority of the purchases. However, if you were smart, you'd have chosen 1 day shipping and have received the item.

Me? I was not smart and did not select 1 day shipping so it looks like my order will most likely be canceled once Amazon deals with this...
