htns··on Deep Learning Courses
I wonder if Vulkan will replace CUDA
htns··on Google to France: We Won't Forget It for You Wholesale
That's how the law is written. A newspaper can publish archives, but not do anything it likes with the influence of the front page.
htns··on Autonomous Weapons: An Open Letter from AI and Robotics Researchers
Biological and chemical weapons were easy to ban because their use didn't provide the great powers any relative advantage. In fact Russia continued to have a very active chemical and biological weapons program, including stockpiles. They just never put it to use.
htns··on The rise of the new Crypto War
Every user downloads and runs arbitrary code constantly, as updates. In the far future updates might come with a formal proof of their security, machine-verified on download, but for quite a few years still we will be stuck with just cryptography.

A front door would be using Microsoft's signing keys. As long as you don't leak the keys, you aren't diluting security in general. A back door would be just leaving vulnerabilities around. It's a meaningful distinction.

htns··on Running a Dark Web pedophile honeypot
Another thing is that Tor is global. People might not think twice about their security when they are effectively within the law or at worst may get a fine.
htns··on Was the Soviet 1923 Male Birth Cohort Doomed by World War II? (2014)
Despite having tried to google it a few times, I have never found a table of deaths by birth year over WWI or WWII for any country. You'd think it would be on Wikipedia. Even rough estimates would make for a nice blog post.
htns··on Greeks Reject Bailout Terms
The funny thing is that now we will see whether that was true.
htns··on “Systemd should not default to using time{1,2,3,4}.google.com”
Ubuntu and Debian are using their own pools (https://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/pkg-systemd/systemd.git/tree...). Fedora and RHEL are using their own pools as well (http://pkgs.fedoraproject.org/cgit/systemd.git/tree/systemd.... ctrl+f ntp). A lot of noice about nothing.
htns··on Porting the Unity Editor to Linux: Stuff I Wish We’d Done Then
Yeah, just about the only reasons to use GTK+ in new projects are the plain C API and slightly better bindings. Qt bindings support deteriorated a little from Qt 4 to Qt 5 (python is there but still no java bindings as far as I can tell), whereas GTK+ isn't expanding in features so it doesn't get to have such problems.
htns··on How to get a massive discount on college: get married
The military might have some luck with such regulations, but I doubt civilian bureaucracy even pretends to care as long as the marriage actually exists on paper. It's just not enforceable.
htns··on Sexual Paranoia Strikes Academe
Yeah, the reasoning has gone a full Orwellian loop, from an excuse/discussion-terminator to something people take seriously.
htns··on “Swift will be open source later this year”
QML is a declarative UI markup language with javascript scripting. Are there really any parallels to Swift? I haven't looked at it in any detail before.
htns··on A major milestone has been reached in our Brain Preservation Prize
Aren't neurons relatively sizable? I don't see why they would totally "decay" in a short time frame, but maybe it's because I'm ignorant.
htns··on Mastering Emacs
I map esc to the key between left shift and Z. It doesn't exist on US keyboards, though. And I put backspace on caps-lock. What I don't understand is putting any kind of simultaneous combo key on caps-lock, since caps-lock + a is not really easy to press. It doesn't help that many keyboards have a bit of a gap between a and caps-lock (to help position the left hand and prevent accidental caps-locking?).
htns··on Mastering Emacs
No, swap your alt-gr and ctrl.
htns··on Poor Little Rich Women
Equality of choice is just one kind of equality. The trick is to pick between choice and outcome equality as it benefits you the most.
htns··on Police Start to Reconsider Longstanding Rules on Using Force
Here in Finland armed men getting shot in the leg is not that rare of an occurrence, e.g. http://yle.fi/uutiset/prison_guard_arrested_after_shooting_a...
htns··on Absolute Beginner's Guide to Emacs (2012)
Just map Alt-Gr to control
htns··on American students head to Germany for free college
Don't forget that starting next year, you will no longer be able to reapply to any Finnish universities if you have been accepted to one before. I would at least get a bachelor's degree so it will be easier to apply to universities abroad if you ever want to continue your education.
htns··on American students head to Germany for free college
Actually, it is also sort of the opposite in Finland. The student grants are smaller than unemployment benefits etc. If you just stay at home doing nothing you are eligible for more money than if you enroll as a student.
htns··on 50% of Japanese surveyed have not had sex in the past month
Japan is very different from the West though, so you should clarify which parts you think actually apply to Japan too. E.g. Japan is well behind the curve compared to the West when it comes to sex disparity in school dropouts or university attendance, though it's certainly moving in the same direction. (See http://www.oecdbetterlifeindex.org/, and click on gender differences and then limit to education, you get women 7.7 men 7.6 in Japan vs women 7.3 men 6.3 in the US)
htns··on Why did Japan surrender? (2011)
Hundreds of Japanese cities were leveled by firebombing. Having a town nuked every few weeks was not such a big consideration against that background. If only they had trucked on for a few more months we wouldn't have to read these articles.
htns··on 'Silk Road Reloaded' Just Launched on a Network More Secret Than Tor
I have not run i2p or otherwise paid much attention to the project for more than a year, but I did notice it had a remote code execution vulnerability discovered last summer or so (stemming from its default-on web admin interface: http://blog.exodusintel.com/2014/07/23/silverbullets_and_fai...). Just because of that I would not consider it an alternative to Tor. However it's not true that "nobody uses i2p". The network is somewhat lively. Another thing is that relay mode is the norm rather than the exception (unlike with Tor), meaning your relay going down can be correlated with your i2p torrent client going down etc.

I'd look to GNUnet (https://gnunet.org/) as the future. It is more than just a Tor alternative, since it also has non-realtime features. Unfortunately it also has few or no users. A neat feature for any aspiring network would be capability to run over Tor, so you don't start with an empty anonymity set.

htns··on Ori File System
It appears to be about the same service as Dropbox, except a bit less centralized. So it'll be faster because you don't have to go through a centralized server, e.g. your phone and computer can talk directly on WLAN instead of going through your slow internet connection
htns··on Freemail
If you are hysteric about things like these then just don't use your own IP. Supposedly it's not difficult to buy a VPS with bitcoin. And really, pumping money into such businesses is a greater contribution to enduring internet anonymity than running Freenet.
htns··on When rational thinking is correlated with intelligence the correlation is modest
I'm no expert, but as I understand induction is also a form of this kind of "case reasoning", so to get anything much done you will have to introduce some extra axioms, even if you omit the excluded middle.
htns··on The Workman keyboard layout (2010)
Because Ctrl ought to be on Alt-Gr.
htns··on The Rise of Men Who Don’t Work – And What They Do Instead
As long as a raise of income of $N docks you at most N - (whatever you consider minimum wage) dollars in welfare, you won't be outright disincentivized from working.
htns··on IBM’s Watson Analytics platform is now open to everyone
Yeah, this appears to be just online statistics. The only "AI" thing about it is that it can match natural language queries to your spreadsheet column names.
htns··on Sweden has proof foreign submarine entered its waters
Back when this was happening it was big news because the Swedish military didn't really hide they were searching for a submarine in an enclosed bay. In the end they didn't catch anything, so this could be seen as an embarrassment for them whether or not there really was a sub.

The political side is that Sweden is not in NATO, as the electorate sees NATO as too global and too likely to draw the country into remote conflicts or the next world war. Russia is the only remotely plausible military threat in the region, so it's the bogeyman NATO will have to use if it wants to lure Sweden in. This incident will be used to argue the Swedish military is inadequate on its own. On the other hand Russia is testing everyone's military capabilities, e.g. Russian planes routinely skirt US airspace. In the 80's Sweden had lots of similar incidents (as well as confirmed ones: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swedish_submarine_incidents), and those didn't drive Sweden to join NATO. However Swedish society has become a lot less militant since then, abolishing conscription and reducing military budgets, and the memory of Sweden faring splendidly through WWII by staying independent is not as fresh. Eventually Sweden may end up in NATO solely because there isn't political will to do anything else.

If Sweden were to join NATO that could have implications for the neighboring Finland, which isn't in NATO either but still has conscription. Finland is the buffer between Sweden and Russia, so it is a given Finland would have an independent Sweden's backing.

Another thing is that there's much trade between Finland and Russia, and it's certainly old hat in Finland to fish for benefits by being the one European country that's not overtly russophobic. Finland even has much Russian military equipment.

Also, this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B19kYo80yec , though I don't really remember its backstory. (The RT article linked in the description seems to be reporting on a Swedish site reporting on that video, and the link to the Swedish site is broken.) But the impression I have got is that Russian media is overall unashamed in reporting on Russian interests abroad.
