hsparikh··on As Coursera Evolves, Colleges Stay On and Investors Buy In
At Tuva (tuvalabs.com), we are creating an environment to learn foundational statistics and data analysis concepts and skills that go well beyond just video instruction. To get a feel for experience, check out a 30 sec demo here: https://vimeo.com/137256993

hsparikh··on NASA data API
This is wonderful. We will be using/hosting some of these datasets on Tuva (tuvalabs.com) for educators and learners in K-12, Higher-Ed, and beyond.
hsparikh··on Learn data science in your browser
Agreed. There are many different components to learning the basics of exploring, analyzing, visualizing, and interpreting real data.

Checkout Tuva's incredibly easy to use tools to get an idea of how these concepts can be brought to life for data novices and young learners.

hsparikh··on Tangle: a JavaScript library for reactive documents
Have yet to go through Evan's post, but as you point out, the equations might be the most accessible way to truly comprehend relationships between 4 or more variables.

However, libraries like Tangle are powerful tools to visualize and understand relationships between 2-3 variables.

hsparikh··on Tangle: a JavaScript library for reactive documents
The numbers should be draggable via touch.
hsparikh··on Tangle: a JavaScript library for reactive documents
Definitely agree with you, and the phrasing will change as we improve the design of these pages. Thanks for the feedback!
hsparikh··on Tangle: a JavaScript library for reactive documents
Thanks for the feedback. There is a lot of work that still needs to be done to improve the UI for these tools, but our goal is to build a library of such visual tools for tens of relevant topics.
hsparikh··on Tangle: a JavaScript library for reactive documents
Precisely. In physics, testing extreme cases and boundary conditions is one of the first ways to get a better understanding of a system. Tangle can be a great tool to empower learners to do this visually.
hsparikh··on Tangle: a JavaScript library for reactive documents
We are wholly inspired by Bret's work, and are currently playing around with the tangle library to help students visualize the concept of area, perimeter, and volume. Here is a preview: http://tuvalabs.com/resources/area/

We also plan to open source this code in due time. Ignore the mess please.

hsparikh··on Show HN: Pre-configured Django project, Git repo, and virtualenv with 1 command
excited to give this a whirl this weekend.
hsparikh··on Most popular browser missing (Chrome)...
i have been using a variety of extensions (bitly, etc.) for awhile now and have never had an issue like this before. I can log into fb, but nothing shows up on the initial page.
hsparikh··on Most popular browser missing (Chrome)...
FWIW, I haven't been able to load my facebook newsfeed on Chrome for the last 3-4 days.
hsparikh··on Show HN: Imagine a search engine that removed top million sites from its index
As someone learning web development, I'd love to get some insights into how one could build this.
hsparikh··on Django Production Deployment and Development Using Git
Thank you! I will be in touch.
hsparikh··on Django Production Deployment and Development Using Git
I am learning django/web development, and will likely be launching my app in the wild soon. A link that details out how to manage deployment and source code management using git would be tremendously helpful.
hsparikh··on Oppenheimer's recommendation letter for Richard Feynman
Feynman clearly mentions in "Surely You are Joking..." that he got turned down from Columbia for his undergraduate degree due to Jewish quotas that existed among universities at that time. So yes, it certainly mattered in America in the 1940s.
hsparikh··on Diaspora Co-Founder Ilya Zhitomirskiy Passes Away At 21
Very sad news. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.
hsparikh··on Khan Academy Gets 5 Million to Expand Faculty & Platform & to Build a School
Can't find the link at the moment, but this is incorrect. The first results that came out of the initial trial showed no significant improvement in student performance using KA's approach compared to the traditional approach.

Edit: here is the link http://blendmylearning.com/2011/08/31/the-results/

hsparikh··on Please review my startup. Safe text messaging for teachers
I believe there is a startup from this semester's Imagine K-12 batch that is working on a similar product, albeit its more twitter like. Here it is: http://www.remind101.com/

Teacher/parent is definitely a more viable place to start this kind of a tool. Good luck!

hsparikh··on Ask HN: What's an underpaid hacker at an SF startup to do?
IMO two aspects you must look at carefully are: the startup company, and the team. You obviously joined a startup because you believed in the founders, and what they are building. Does that still hold true? What kind of advisors and investors does your current company have on board, vs. what kind of advisors and investors are behind the other companies?

Also, more importantly, do you like working with you current team? Are you learning from them, and do you folks get along well? Not all teams are built the same, and there is a chance that you might not gel so well with team at your new company.

Also, in the long run, equity stake > base salary, for obvious reasons. If you truly believe in the company and want to work hard to make it grow or towards an exit, your additional equity stake could make all the difference. The way valuations are going these days, they will change pretty quickly.

hsparikh··on Battle for Tripoli
As another chapter closes on the Arab Spring, BBC is bringing to us brilliant coverage of events on ground through the power of technology combined with real guts and determination of the news reporters.
hsparikh··on 10 Android apps account for 43pc of usage
would be nice to find out which 10 apps are dominating the android scene.
hsparikh··on Ask HN: Startups working with Physics
I am still building my product, but I will be using a lot of basic physics (and science in general) for it. Please get in touch if you would like to hear more.
hsparikh··on Fukime - The Mobile Cloud Platform
I am literally holding my stomach in laughter. Great name and nice to see founders with a sense of humor.
hsparikh··on Ask HN: Where is the Django community?
I am newbie when it comes to development, and I had the same choice between developing my product on RoR or Django. I chose Django, and between the tutorial, docs, and the google mailing list, I think there is a pretty good community out there.

A book would be nice, but there are some good apps on registraton, profile, etc. available on GitHub or BitBucket out there. Granted, it might not be plug and play like in the case of RoR, but I have found it to be alright so far.
