hs··on How To Be Fucking Awesome
if u buy that 10% improvement by 10x effort and mapping the 10000 hours:

10000 -> 99.9% 1000 -> 99% 100 -> 90%

100 hrs is about 13 weeks (a quarter) of 3 uni 1hr credits + 1.5hr practice = 13 * 3 * (1 + 1.5)

if u take deliberate practice as vector, that's only the magnitude part

the direction part is what to study and that ends up being more important

given a constraint of 100 hrs, a nonprogrammer will end up becoming more productive studying lisp compared to java

but of course, to say such programmer is 90% better than average is too much :D ... and controversial

hs··on How do you test your web app in the various browsers?
I use vnc

firefox on my dev box

safari on my living room mac mini G4 (vnc from dev box)

IE? i call my friend to test or just go to internet cafe

iirc vnc server can take external ip ... so presummably you can connect to vnc server half globe away and see how people there connect to your site

of course the bandwith is shared between browsing and vnc-ing so u will get less than accurate experience

hs··on Hacking Education
people who criticize wikipedia are insecure
hs··on The bigger economic disaster: 78 million baby-boom retirees
i'm unfamiliar with social security

what happens if a person can live to 200 yo? Will USA, starting from retirement age, pay till s/he dies?

what if the person only lives to retirement+1 age? can descendant carry over the benefits? ot it just poof?

hs··on Secret message in source code of Digg

hs··on Just Leave Them Behind
this reminds me of a professor in probability who didn't have formal education

iirc, he was a 'magician' with cards or something ... who plays a lot with probability

he impressed a prof from ivy league uni, then got into grad school without having to do undergrad.

it happened around 1950, should be less possible now

actually around 2003 i had a friend doing master in EE, having background as chinese language teacher. An old chinese professor of her let her into the EE grad program :D she was really struggling :(

hs··on A radical business plan for start-ups: Charge people.
even 37s products embrace free/no-money strategy to some extent

she can charge $ because the products have business use

next, the challenge for 37s is to make a pay-for-use 'wasting-time' sites ... with NO free trial

impossible?

hs··on How do you handle notes and ideas?

hs··on Ask HN: Are one-page résumés passé? How long is your résumé?
ZERO

resumes never win me any job offers, neither does schooling; however, past projects and works do

on topic, my 5? years old lost resume was 1 page long

hs··on Five Years (doing mostly PHP) is Enough
"I can’t stand having 60% of the work day tied up with: copy-and-paste chunk of code, then tweak for new field names, then make sure to update the correct database fields, add validation, ad nauseum."

no wonder with that approach (copy paste, field names, etc) ... one will get bored

a good approach is "do without"

how do i write better, simpler code w/o copy paste

how do i eliminate using field names (i don't know in php, but maybe use list and map ... nullify the need for temp variables)

maybe do w/o database? maybe use in memory persistence, load once, write every time?

how about javascript validation instead of php equivalent? better user experience

how about cutting the 100 loc (peppered with temp var, fn, loops and other nasties) to 5 loc (say using map, apply, lambda, closure -- again, i don't use php)

i do notice that codebase that has limits (like can't be > 1000 loc) is usually better than the no-limits equivalent

"do without" will force u to think and it's more fun because your code won't be similar to others' boilerplate

the code probably won't be 'best industry practice' aka code that coworkers/employers will appreciate; however, the beauty of your own code can only be enjoyed by you only ... and i think that itself is a great reward

but of course u can't hide from responsibility when the code breaks, otherwise one can always blame the copy-paste or legacy codes -- anyway holding the responsibility alone is a priviledge, not liability

hs··on No One Programs Any More
when i took math courses, we used maple, and R (for statistics)

engineering courses i took focused on matlab, and C (for embedded microcontrollers)

I never use java as 'domain-specific-language' for those projects.

The intro to CS was java; however, i took C for engineering course for uni requirement (counted as intro to cs)

hs··on No One Programs Any More
i looked up a sample code for single file upload, tweaking it to handle corner cases; however, there's a cgi library for that shrug ... better, simpler

but as a bonus, i now know http request better :D ... extending the cgi library, for example, uploading multiple files in one http request

library also has another use, for testing

for example, i got stuck char used as separator/ending in netstring, used in lighttpd's scgi

i looked at python scgi library source code, saw the output scgi variables etc, then readjust my porting code

but i strongly agree that building something from scratch is tremendously rewarding ... no matter how crappy it's - there's a beauty only u got the priviledge to enjoy ... FUN!

hs··on No One Programs Any More
i remember my graduate level class on simulation (engineering course, not math/cs)

we had first assignment on generating 10000 random numbers

a guy fired up excel, generated rand in one cell, dragged to the bottom 10000, and gasp printed it

It was fun looking at flickering monitor, and humming laser printer - after a while, i felt sympathy for those devices

it took me less than 5 loc in matlab ... and being friendlier to trees as a bonus :D

and no, it's not a community college ... rather a top research engineering school ... but hey, things like this happen a lot

hs··on The Fed Should Buy Down Consumer Credit Card Rates - Fast
when there's crisis, some people can use it for manipulation

For example:

Yesterday, NCC bank got acquired stock-for-stock 0.0392 ratio (2.23 / 56.89) by PNC bank.

NCC did not get TARP money. PNC got money from treasury in return for preferred stocks

NCC largest shareholder (Corsair) gets 4+ bln in 'non-stock dividend' + 3 bln shares valued at $2.35 (Corsair invested 7 bln dollar during the last 6 months)

NCC executives get 300+ mill usd in compensation and 'golden parachute' (they will be in PNC+NCC board)

the employees of NCC (non executives) got laid off (4000 already) and will be more

The shareholders got shafted, thursday close was $2.77, the deal is priced at $2.23

There's a class action lawsuit in progress against NCC -- NCC CEO said NCC is "well capitalized" and various misleading things that can be considered fraud

In effect, FDIC infused TARP money to PNC to buy NCC, in return for the stakes (they say every bank qualifies -- that's not right)

See, in crisis some people get more power to screw everyone ... so don't worry about credit card crisis not happening -- it will ... some people want it to happen

hs··on Debian's Vim maintainer switches to Emacs
I don't use emacs simply because it's GNU/FSF; tried it but prefer vim so much because vi follows unix philosophy

I can't stand GNU unnecessary complexity, reflected in very long 17997 bytes GPL license (the COPYING file)

I do use GPL softwares (out of necessity); however, i try as much to avoid g* programs and use BSD/MIT equivalent

hs··on Why Talent Is Overrated
Thomas A Edison lacking talents to get into a grade school has physical limitation (deaf) but invented? phonograph?

i would even say as far that limitations (talent, physical, money etc) are necessary to make it big

hs··on The more Starbucks a country has, the bigger its financial problems.
on another news, the more espresso machines a country has, the bigger its startup problems
hs··on How to save money running a startup
In Linux/BSD/Unix, it depends more on the window manager (dwm/wmii/ion3/ratpoison/etc nullify the need of 2nd monitor)

I guess the 2 monitor programmers are windows guys (nothing wrong with that) ... and then they migrate to osx/linux, bringing the bad habits and polluting osx/linux over time

your second monitor for MBP, is it used for extending the view for osx, or it's just a cloned view of the laptop screen (let's say via external monitor cable)?

if it's a cloned view, vnc is an old and reliable technique that works regardless of cpu/os used (you can control powerpc mac, intel mac, windows, linux, bsd machines ... in one box)

dual/multi-boot and parallel guys, try to beat that! :D

hs··on How to save money running a startup
the list mostly consists of 'spend/buy this and that (mac, 2nd monitor, aeron, espresso machine, etc) to save more money further'

those seem to be in direct opposition to the epitome of startup: steve wozniak

hs··on Ask HN: Would there be an energy crisis if...
with nuclear, you still have a centralized source ... resulting loss in cables and converters

with solar, it's decentralized ... loss should be minimal ... maybe no need for AC converters ... can u directly use DC ?

hs··on GPL and Javascript
should i include a 17997 bytes COPYING file as comment in my js ... and call it GNU/Javascript?
hs··on Ask YC: What do you do to excel at your job ?
i keep natural 'no-tech' aquarium as a hobby

after reading 'ecology of planted aquarium by Diana Walstad', i basically say bye bye to weekly water change, lighting, aerator, pump, fertilizers and other fancy stuffs

now i only have soil (any, cheap will do), gravel, water, plants and fish - the fish food and mulm become fert ... along with semiannual water change

the algae problem is combatted with fast growing emergent (root+in-water+out-water stem) plant ... the plants will take nutrient faster (from soil+water+air) than the algae (from water alone) ever will

relevance to my work? now i use fewer, simpler (but powerful) tools with rapid iterations (hopefully at faster rate than bug creation)

hs··on The power of negative thinking
with all these positive and negative thinkings ... will they converge to ZERO thinking?
hs··on Y Combinator Challenge #27 - Hardware/software hybrids
i wanted to play with microcontroller for drip irrigation, pumps, solar powered etc

Simpler, natural solution exists for plant+fert+pesticide: wet field: a combo of rice+azolla+sheep+duck+fish dry field: a combo of rice+white clover

Similarly, i wanted to play with microcontrolled fish-keeping, pump, filter, aerator, heater, fertilizer ... fancy stuff

Simpler, no-tech natural solution again exists: just use soil+aqua plant+sunlight

Really, nature amazes me to no end, to the point that i hate my engineering knowledge ... i truly concern that my creation will be inferior to nature

For reference, the natural books: one straw revolution: masanobu fukuoka the power of duck: takao furuno ecology of the planted aquarium:diana walstad

hs··on Ask HN: Hack a healthy, yet not expensive, meal.
well, here resto and kfc seem to emphasize that they cook chicken at 350 deg C (or some high number like that), ensuring 'avian flu free'

i don't have direct experience with avian flu (I was in Taiwan during SARS, wearing masks, but didn't catch the flu) so i assume i can get it from eating ... well maybe it's just a marketing tactic from kfc and others

but still the peace of mind is there :D not having to worry about some stuffs is great

hs··on Non-Hacker News
I don't mind about off-topic posts since what i'm looking for mostly is short, witty / insightful comments

for example, pg may not comment on obviously "hacker" stuff like php thread, but he might on 'non-hacker' posts like healthy food, stock market, etc

that's why i avoid (skimming) posts with php, python, ruby, windows, linux, gnu, oss, fsf, mac, osx, apple since the probability that i get great comments is approaching zero [over time]

Yes, there's a "comments" link up there, but i still have to manually search

My suggestion is that hn to have an alert icon where the list of my favorite "thought leaders" comment on the post - think about gmail's star

so if a post has a star next to it, then maybe pg and some thought leaders comment on it ... that post could be interesting

"always take the harder path" ... commenting is harder than upvoting

+1 for freshness

'real' food has 'bio-sensor' ... you can tell just by looking, that a fruit/veggie is bad

it's much harder to 'sense' that in processed food

i find that fruit/veg is harder to fool with, maybe having to do with its low price (not much incentive to cheat)

in my country we got rotten meats cleaned with formaldehyde and then soaked in fresh blood to be sold along with fresh meats ... such thing is unheard of in veg/fruit (groceries can wax to prevent, but once fruit/veg is rotten, it's hard to 'rejuvinate')

being vegetarian leads to simpler life, no worries about mad cow, avian flu, etc
