hs··on JQuery 1.3 Released
does it replace the livequery plugin?
hs··on When the Education Bubble Finally Pops
after credit card bubble bursts
hs··on At M.I.T., Large Lectures Are Going the Way of the Blackboard
i like blackboard for the simple reason that chalk never lies
hs··on Joel on Software: "By installing Java, you will be able to experience the power of Java"
being succinct is un-java
hs··on Ask YC: how to learn computer programming in 8 months?
touch type (10 fingers + numbers)

vim

newlisp

jquery

hs··on Why I still prefer Prototype to jQuery
i prefer framework that helps me crafting shorter code

the last time i used prototype was in 2007, now it's all jquery

hs··on Ask YC: Do any of you find yourself reading comments before the actual link?
always, especially when there's 0 comment so i can be the frist!!!

just kidding, seriously, i check the people and how deep the comments' tree is first

if it's too deep, there's high chance of two person fight or grammar nazi in action

if it's too shallow, the article is not interesting

i like 3 levels deep (5 at most)

hs··on Ask HN: What programming language should I teach my little brother?
i second the newlisp :D

then js+jquery with firebug console as repl

hs··on Ask HN: Do you criticize?
"Exposition, criticism, appreciation, is work for second-rate minds.” -G H Hardy, the opening lines of A Mathematician’s apology
hs··on My First Day Working a Full-time job (at my startup)
nice green on black terminal

i miss osx transparent terminal ... i can't get the equivalent in linux/bsd :(

hs··on Data Analysts Captivated by Power of R
back in uni, i used matlab everyday couple years ago, it was that function is file, so if i have 100 functions, i must have 100 files in a directory

i find that too limiting, found python+numarray+matplotlib and never looked at matlab ever since ... never regret

ironically i got a phone interview request from matlab at the end that year (i was on vacation, never got to that)

hs··on Encouraged Commentary (cool use of jQuery to enhance blog commenting)
i just coded threaded responses that's linear in time, within and between grandparents-grandchildrens subs

newer response is pushed to the last node on respective branch to preserve time order

tree structure on flat file, output generated by recursion

then i looked at drupal which also has threaded posts ... i wonder if mysql approach is easier

hs··on The Daily Routines of Interesting People
you can cook everything in a rice cooker

i used to put rice and raw chicken fillet and some condiments (optional) into a rice cooker

it's not that bad :D

sometimes i ate it from rice cooker pan? (it's small rice cooker) -> saving time on cleaning (no need for temporary dish)

NB: you can even put raw egg, but the shell will bee sticky

hs··on 2008: My year of living smaller
that's it, $100 knife is wonderful till you lost it or break it

$10 knifes, you can afford to have spares

another example, i no longer use mechanical pencil because it betrayed me so many times (i can't see if there's extra lead inside)

transparent mech pencil is better, but i often forget to bring extra leads :(

that's why i buy 96 counts pencils for $5 ... the lead is visible, it never fails me

and no, i don't bring sharpener (you can always break the pencil and 'sharpen' the lead against rough surfaces)

i bring 5 sharpened pencils instead and put the rest in various places

although it's redundant (to ensure reliability), it's simpler and i'm much happier

hs··on Ask HN: How do you follow people's submissions / comments on here?

hs··on 2008: My year of living smaller
i choose to wear sandals -> bye bye socks & holes problem

the 'need' to cover every part of one's body is perplexing ... also the 'need' to use different products for different body parts (shampoo for hair, hand soap, genital soap, etc)

i take old skool approach, just use washing soda (a pinch for 0.5 L water) for my personal-cleaning needs. only when i deal with oily stuff then i use commercial soap/shampoo

nowaday i don't go to shoes, socks, and cleaning aisles anymore ... freeing time for more important stuffs

hs··on 2008: My year of living smaller
spot on for the behavioral changes

i'd use the $100 knife LESS than the $10 counterpart -> that's why i use $1 knifes because i cannot care less if it breaks

even google doesn't use sun blades, that's pretty telling

about home ownership, there are correlations that countries that are low on home ownership level(e.g, swiss) is richer than ones with high level (e.g, spain)

those examples are correlation, not causality ... anomaly i'd say and it's worth practicing

hs··on Ask HN: What is your startup's backup policy?
i use mercurial for everything (code, images, generated html/jpg, etc) ... maybe i should put some in .hgignore especially the generated bits

so there are at least 2 copies (colo and desktop) ... and dvd

i do still tar on structural disruptions (jquery update, openbsd upgrade, data structure change, etc)

that's per site, every morning, semi-automatic (i still prefer to ssh and then manually hg update shrug)

hs··on Facebook v. Power Ventures
i wonder if everyone takes a revenge on facebook, will it survive?
hs··on Survival tips if you find yourself in the Middle Ages?
i'll invent a search engine startup and conquer the wo ... wa ... wait a minute
hs··on Ask HN: New Ubuntu Desktop--what would you install?
i prefer xubuntu

installed: vim-full dwm mercurial lighttpd mplayer mpg123 xpdf ImageMagick qiv vifm (there's a vim-like photo manager, but i forget its name) wink vnc (server and client) ssh server gftp (the ftp cli sucks big time, unlike one in openbsd ... and no axyftp) opera swiftweasel java 6 jre (for ameritrade) adobe flash (for google analytics)

uninstall: basically games, default bloated software, useless hypocrate softwares that only play free format, etc

hs··on Joel Spolsky's resume tip for startup applicants
"Contributes to OpenBSD file system in spare time"

i'm curious about a windows shop using openbsd as an example for startup cto recruiting

hs··on Amazon Should Acquire Netflix - Here's Why
i guess the reason amazon doesn't have many distribution centers is because they are expensive

she outsourced the problem by having amazon marketplace

now every kindle is distribution center (cheap)

looking at this trend, she might be better off creating a kindle for movies

her strength is not in rental (why safari bookshelf is unchallenged ?)

if she really want to be in movie rental, maybe safari dvd-rack model (download high-res per dvd chapter or streaming lower res for full, 3 titles/rack/mo) is a long shot

the success of youtube indicates that not everyone cares about dvd-quality clips, they simply want to watch it now

hs··on Is it crazy to quit a 6+ figure salaried job to do a startup right now?
golden handcuff
hs··on Ask HN: Notice a jump in Page Rank today?
will a google search query increase page rank?

for example if i search "ycombinator startup" then google (PR10) will produce links (no rel=nofollow in <a href>)

i think that will increase search volume index in google trend, but not sure about page rank

hs··on What does the "netbook" craze tell us about the future of laptops
the article suffers from 'bigger is better' and 'expensive is better'

back around 5 years ago, the smaller the laptop, the more expensive it was -- eeepc would have sold for $2000+ if she was available back then ... see sony vaio prices etc

asus disrupted the industry by following apple (smaller mac is cheaper) pricing model

basically making luxury into commodity

so imho netbooks win not (solely) because it's cheap ... there are bigger, more powerful laptops priced like netbook but those don't sell as much ... what gives?

3G netbooks will win big (against cellphones), disrupting telecommunication (now you can be online anywhere, and make cheap long/international call using skype and/or usual way using SIM card, paying carriers if you wish)

hs··on Ask HN: What would you be doing if you weren't a hacker?
ninja / pirate
hs··on Becoming a renewable energy engineer
spot on solidworks (i still can't find foss alternative)

in uni back then i learned I-DEAS (very expensive software)

i think uni = slave preparation (debt + nonstartup softwares)

another is matlab (expensive) ... my uni should teach python+numarray+matplotlib instead

NB: i self learned solidworks from manual because our research group used it (despite the official uni strong support on I-DEAS) ... i must thank my advisor

i think pg is right that the 'test' is less corrupt in graduate school because the professor (using own budget) has to work with the student (my adv is from mit, never wanted to order new expensive stuff, always build from scratch ... making us suffer in a good way)

hs··on Ask HN: What editor do you use?
vim, for everything

ed, when i really have to

hs··on Teen with Home Chemistry Lab Arrested for Meth, Bombs
