hrydgard··on I was terrified of an eyeball injection
Consider ICL instead of LASIK if it's an alternative for the level of vision you have. Super happy, and the procedure was really no big deal.
hrydgard··on YOLOv5 on CPUs: Sparsifying to Achieve GPU-Level Performance
CPUs haven't replaced GPUs for graphics though, and are very far away from doing it...
hrydgard··on Working in One Bit
Have you looked into good old gfx2 for pixel art?

hrydgard··on The unreasonable effectiveness of just showing up everyday
Nothing wrong with just following a bunch of recipes. If you do it enough you'll start to internalize common things and techniques, also play around with modifying them and substituting similar ingredients.
hrydgard··on ARM64EC: Building Native and Interoperable Apps for Windows 11 on ARM
Not the case. Actual thunking is only done when calling into the kernel, you can't load a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit process or vice versa.
hrydgard··on Mumble: Open-Source, Low Latency, High Quality Voice Chat
Many projects, including mine, just use it without the voice features, as a modern replacement for IRC.

It does work great for that.

hrydgard··on Machine Learning Is a Marvelously Executed Scam
New roombas and clones map your house with lidar and let you clean exact zones using a map from an app.
hrydgard··on Show HN: A 64-step drum sequencer I built using React and Redux
Really nice samples! Sounds great.

Consider having the space bar toggle playback - would make it so much smoother to use! (used to that from all kinds of music software)

hrydgard··on Rust for Windows 0.9
They're just bad at naming - that's not what they're doing.
hrydgard··on Dissecting the Apple M1 GPU, Part III
AMD has removed exactly the same hardware, and NVIDIA doesn't benefit much from the specialized vertex fetch hardware anymore, even specialized uniform buffer stuff is getting close to marginal benefit. Hardly unique to Apple.
hrydgard··on Demoscene accepted as UNESCO cultural heritage in Germany
If pouet.net isn't a huge museum, then what is it?
hrydgard··on Shops return to rural Sweden but are now staff-free
This does exist in many bigger stores in Sweden too, and it's bliss.
hrydgard··on Nvidia Limits RTX 3060 Hash Rate
3060 is a new card, they're not "crippling" it post-release.
hrydgard··on iPhone 7 with dead NAND netbooting unmodified Ubuntu 20.04 via USB ethernet
No the page size on Windows is 4kb, however some things like file mapping do require 64kb alignment, due to ancient compatibility concerns with DEC Alpha.
hrydgard··on Asahi Linux: Linux on Apple Silicon project
The GPU ISA (yes, GPUs have ISAs) is undocumented.
hrydgard··on Why can’t you buy a good webcam?
Logitech Streamcam is pretty good.
hrydgard··on After centuries, a seemingly simple math problem gets an exact solution
There's always Fermat's Last Theorem.
hrydgard··on Experts are sounding the alarm about the hidden dangers of gas stoves
Cast iron works perfect on induction. Just don't use the boost mode.
hrydgard··on Experts are sounding the alarm about the hidden dangers of gas stoves
It might have a carbon filter, which is pretty effective. Need to change it every few years though...
hrydgard··on Should California ban gas in new homes? A climate battle heats up
Try induction stoves. Better than gas.
hrydgard··on Should California ban gas in new homes? A climate battle heats up
No, induction cooktops are "hot" (heating your cookware) absolutely instantly, and in power boost mode transfers more energy into your cookware than gas. Basic ones are also no longer expensive, at least not in Europe.

You do need magnetic cookware so pure aluminum pots are right out but you really don't need expensive stuff.

hrydgard··on Self-host your fonts for better performance
If your website has visitors from China, that's one more reason to not use Google Fonts directly - it's blocked for them so your site will look wrong.
hrydgard··on 1.5 is the midpoint between 0 and infinity in Ruby
"if x and y are doubles and x > y, then we have shown that double_as_int64(x) > double_as_int64(y)"

This only applies for numbers of the same sign though. As soon as the sign changes, the relation breaks since floating point numbers use an independent sign bit while int64 is 2's complement.

hrydgard··on Apple Silicon M1: Black Magic Fuckery
Apple CPUs have great NEON performance, so if those libraries have NEON paths, they'll scream.
hrydgard··on World of Warcraft 9.0.2 client runs natively on Apple Silicon
Chromebooks are actually widely used in schools in the Nordics.
hrydgard··on 7k MS-DOS Games playable in the browser
It's a very real emulator, just nowhere near cycle accurate :)
hrydgard··on Making a Googol:1 Reduction with Lego Gears [video]
Can't do it with Lego worm gears though. Maybe if you add some machine oil, but otherwise the plastic-vs-plastic friction is just too much.
hrydgard··on Rust Is Surprisingly Good as a Server Language
If you have an editor with syntax checking such as VS Code with rust-analyzer, it checks syntax in the background as you type, saving you a lot of compile cycles. It doesn't yet scale very well to huge projects but getting better every week - rust-analyzer is under very heavy development.
hrydgard··on Revolut staff claim they’ve been told to quit their jobs or be fired
Just like many Polish people work in say England or Sweden, Ukrainians work in Poland. Exactly the same dynamic.
hrydgard··on Sine-wave speech audio encoding
There's an infinite number of different sets of orthogonal bases that you can construct any signal from. Sine waves (with phase) are a quite natural and convenient choice though, for mathematical reasons (for example, the efficiency of the Fourier transform).
