hrvbr··on They're Taking Over - jellyfish bloom and the future of the ocean.
Of course they're taking over. We are provoking a massive extinction of species in the oceans. Jellyfish are the one group of species we have no use for, so they're taking the free space we give them while enjoying the disappearing of their predators.
hrvbr··on How to save Windows Surface?
To have the honor to be a developer on their platforms, we have to pay Microsoft 49€ per year for Windows and 99€ per year for Windows Phone. That's the opposite of a bounty.
hrvbr··on Why knowing English is important for every software developer
Same in France. It's all about acquiring knowledge that's only available in English. For example, I'm pretty sure that the only database systems documented in French are MySQL and PostgreSQL. Only those who can read English (and are not reluctant to) can use the alternatives.
hrvbr··on Ask HN: How Can I leave Syria now and get asylum in Europe (Germany)
If one EU state offers you asylum, which shouldn't be too hard because your country is notoriously dangerous, then you can work anywhere in the EU. So you could get asylum from Italy or France, then move to Berlin when you have your papers, which takes several months during which you can't have a declared job (in France, they may make sure you don't work by sending you to a transit camp, which is basically a jail).

If you tell them you're an experimented software engineer, it may be much faster to get a work visa than asylum. Ask for this work visa to each embassy in Damascus.

Also, Morrocoan cities are growing like crazy. There may be some business to do there and they may give visas more easily.

hrvbr··on He got 1%, we can't hire him
Well, developers can hire other developers, but we can't easily hire the accountants, lawyers and others (including HR, ironically). The big question is: how do we hire people from a field we're not competent in?

But yes, at my last job interview, I succeeded at the technical interview but failed at the 'personality' one. It's a loss for them, not for me.

hrvbr··on Nissan pledges commercially viable autonomous drive by 2020.
Cars are way too dangerous. We accept the absurdly high number of injuries and deaths they cause only by lack of a better mean of transportation.

I hope self-driving cars will have hyper-efficient safety mechanisms, especially to protect pedestrians and bikers, not just the car's passengers. This would be a huge progress for humanity.

hrvbr··on In many ways PHP is just now starting to come into its own
Plus there is PHP's aesthetics. I can't help but see all PHP code visually unpleasing. Programming isn't just a technical task. It's also an art like writing novels. I'm not satisfied when the code I produce doesn't look pretty, independently from the algorithm. In the article here, the Ruby code looks much cleaner to me than the PHP version, even though it's technically the same. Aesthetics is the main reason why I switched from PHP (that I learned in class) to C# (that I learned on my own).
hrvbr··on Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer to retire within 12 months
He's more of a CTO.

"CEO of Microsoft" is a prestigious title. They could use it as an opportunity to pull a coup. Like offering to merge with Facebook and giving the title to Zuckerberg. It doesn't have to be with FB, any big guy that would bring a missing market to Microsoft's empire would be a coup.

But the reasonable thing to do is to hire from inside.

hrvbr··on Two-Factor Authentication and the Police State
This would have the same effect as refusing to give them the password: you end up in jail.
hrvbr··on Why Silicon Valley funds Instagrams, not Hyperloops
Yes, I was talking about expensive infrastructures in general. It would be crazy to start building the Hyperloop before some working prototypes have proven that it works. But the high-speed train has low risks of loosing money if highways and airlines are saturated (i.e. if the demand is there, which can be predicted by studies).
hrvbr··on Why Silicon Valley funds Instagrams, not Hyperloops
But an Instagram has a high risk of failure whereas a transportation infrastructure is a very low-risk investment. The Hyperloop would be better compared with a huge Internet infrastructure like Google Search than with Instagram.
hrvbr··on The Road to Luna
They don't care about design. If they did they would have created something original. Or at least they would have more than one source of inspiration to pick from. If they wanted to take the whole shape of OSX applications, at least they should have picked a different color theme. Here they stole the functionalities, the shapes, the colors and the metal textures that Apple's designers chose. eOS is designed by Apple, there's no one who care about design in the eOS team, at least not for the apps shown in the video. They're receiving bad critics because thieves receive bad critics. Hopefully they'll learn and their next version will have its own identity.
hrvbr··on Windows Store dev account: getting rid of it is as hard as signing up
edit: a modernized version of Win32 not of .Net, it's in C++.
hrvbr··on Windows Store dev account: getting rid of it is as hard as signing up
WinRT is supposed to be a modernized version of .Net built with lightweight asychronous programming in mind. I haven't yet checked if this promise is bullshit.

In my experience with Windows Azure, Microsoft seems to be moving deliberately slowly. They build a small solid foundation and add more features when they're ready. Azure didn't have AutoScale until recently. I'm sure WinRT will keep growing.

hrvbr··on Hyperloop speculation – launch assist for electric aircraft
I remember a similar project from the French TV news. The airplanes were ultralight drones (no pilot and only as many passenger as taxis). I can't find the source.
