hrdwdmrbl··on Ask HN: How do I train a custom LLM/ChatGPT on my own documents in Dec 2023?
Is Q the answer to this whole thread? People are talking about AWS Bedrock but that seems like something a startup would build upon and offer something like Q, eh?
hrdwdmrbl··on Ask HN: How do I train a custom LLM/ChatGPT on my own documents in Dec 2023?
I have a _small_ e-commerce company and we have >300GB. Most of that bulk is photos and videos though, but in an ideal world I’d like my AI assistant to find that stuff too: “I’m making a Boxing Day ad campaign. Can you show me the ads that we’ve made in previous years and all of the photos that we’ve taken of our new Reindeer and Elf designs?”
hrdwdmrbl··on Ask HN: How do I train a custom LLM/ChatGPT on my own documents in Dec 2023?
I’m sorry, I don’t understand those limits. It uses a lot of unfamiliar terms like “batch inference” and “modality”. I just want a nice UI that I can give my hard-drive to and then ask it questions.

Is there a limit? Could I create a knowledge base with 10,000 documents? 100k? 1M?
hrdwdmrbl··on Shein forces Amazon to lower seller fees
Amazon does need the competition though
hrdwdmrbl··on What if an SQL statement returned a database?
> And if you're dealing with what would be an overly-large amount of repeated values, you just run multiple queries yourself instead of one.

It is a bit annoying to do this though. It would be nice if it was done for me automatically be some db driver.

> And if round-trip latency is some kind of issue with running queries sequentially, you can always issue queries in parallel instead.

Some languages or frameworks don’t provide great parallel ization features though.

I guess at the end of the day if it’s an extension to SQL that you can optionally use, then I would have some situations where I would use it.

hrdwdmrbl··on Apple plans to equip MacBooks with in-house cellular modems
The hybrid phone-table-laptop takes another small step. I've been expecting this feature for a while. Our phones are becoming tables. Our tables are becoming laptops. Our laptops are becoming mobile.

The PDF reading seems to have issues. At first it says that it can’t read PDFs, but then after I encouraged it, it did try to read it, but said that it was unreadable due to formatting issues…
hrdwdmrbl··on Monsanto hit with $175M verdict against Roundup
Can someone explain why they keep losing when all the evidence does seem to say that it isn’t problematic? Is it just politics?
hrdwdmrbl··on I trapped scammers in an impossible maze [video]
No sympathy for those scum. If it was your low-income parents being scammed of their life savings, you wouldn’t either. No one is stopping these criminals. There is no legal system to pursue them. They operate largely outside of any repercussions. No sympathy for those scum.
hrdwdmrbl··on Nonprofit hospitals skimp on charity while CEOs reap millions, report finds
This phenomenon is not limited to hospitals.
hrdwdmrbl··on In search of the least viewed article on Wikipedia (2022)
Incredible that even the least viewed 2021 articles are still really well done! One has a photo. They have 5 and 6 citations respectively. They both have multiple sections.

As someone who was already impressed by Wikipedia, wow! Talk about toiling in obscurity

hrdwdmrbl··on The Enhanced Game – Sports, without drug testing
I wish they would talk about the real corruption of the IPCC and other international sports organizations which basically exist to take bribes from host countries. There's a reason big sporting events often take place in dictatorships.

(or maybe they do, I didn't browse super thoroughly)

hrdwdmrbl··on FTC sues Amazon for illegally maintaining monopoly power
But then by that logic any action by any platform is never illegal. It's their platform, they can do whatever they want. If you don't like, don't use their platform, right? Is that what you're saying? I'm not totally unsympathetic to that POV, but in practice I guess it doesn't seem to be working out so well...

Streaming is a different matter. I agree that you don't own anything if you stream. I also don't think lack of popularity for "buying" is a reason not to have a reasonable rule about the definition of "buying".
hrdwdmrbl··on FTC sues Amazon for illegally maintaining monopoly power
They force sellers to use their payment processor. If you don't, they charge an extra 0.5% markup on top, which basically means that no 3rd party payment processor can be competitive on price.

I think you can also measure their power in the same way as Amazon - The % of fees that they capture as a percent of sales volume goes up every year. Slow squeeze.

Can you explain this further?

hrdwdmrbl··on FTC sues Amazon for illegally maintaining monopoly power
Also do the fact that you never own what you "buy". Buy means buy. Period. Amazon, Audible, Google Play, Apple TV, etc. I would like to _own_!

hrdwdmrbl··on Worldcoin isn’t as bad as it sounds: It’s worse
Yeah, the article and this whole comments thread is very intellectually dishonest.

Disclosure: I’m like, 70% optimistic about the project. I don’t believe that the team are lying. Anyway, as with many things, time will tell. I wouldn’t get worked up over it. If it fails it’s pretty inconsequential.
