hpeter··on Borgo is a statically typed language that compiles to Go
I do the same way like you. My logic was that I can tell where the value is coming from. I would use the same type but different name.

Is it coming from a client via http? Then it needs to be checked and saved

The database? then it has an id field which could be null in other cases.

Or I just create a new instance?

Naming things is hard tho, sometimes I do think I should just name them the same and stop caring. I'm not sure if I gain productivity but it gives me some comfort that I can instantly tell the source of the data.

You can enumerate constants. There is syntax to implicitly assign the integer values, just use iota as a value.
hpeter··on Criminals and oligarchs in EU's sights with new bill targeting football fraud
Orban can now do Homer Simpson's "Backs Into the Bushes" Meme, with his football stadiums.
hpeter··on OpenAI GDPR Complaint
I just thought what kind of narcissistic public figure would sue an AI chatbot because it got his birth date wrong, but then again these people are hyenas.
hpeter··on The walls of Apple's garden are tumbling down
WhatsApp is on IOS tho, they are hiding from the wolf in the wolf den.
hpeter··on Keep Out – WebGL Game
when the screen is smaller than 930px width, its all black for me
hpeter··on How ruthless is Amazon, really?
You should avoid most of their offerings because of vendor lock-in.

My two cents is to build something that could be deployed anywhere else also.

Maybe you are fine staying on AWS forever but maybe you could save a lot of money by migrating somewhere else later.

AWS fees could cost more than your startup makes, depending on how you build your service, who knows what the future brings.

So it's better to make your deployment flexible enough that you can ditch AWS and migrate to dedicated servers easily. It's something to think about from the start.

hpeter··on IBM to buy HashiCorp in $6.4B deal
Errors usually happen during IO, but not in the main business logic and those two can be neatly separated.

But If you are coming from java I can understand the single error handling block is more comfortable, but coming from JavaScript/Typescript it's much more easy to check if err != nil, than to debug errors I forgot to handle, during runtime.

hpeter··on IBM to buy HashiCorp in $6.4B deal
I prefer to handle errors than ignore them. "If err" is actually one of the best things about Go
hpeter··on BeeBase, a programmable relational database with graphical user interface
I've been asked to develop python scripts for libreoffice and it was not fun.
hpeter··on Ask HN: Do you use ChatGPT to generate code? What were your experiences?
Generating code is a nice gimmick but you are better off following tutorials and googling how to build an app, for now.

It takes longer to debug chatgpt hallucinations than writing the code from docs.

You could try RAG, maybe to help you search for information in documentation

hpeter··on MDMA enhances empathy-like behaviors in mice via 5-HT release
Yeah people on festivals usually look depressed and aggressive by day 3. What goes up must come down.
hpeter··on TypeScript: Branded Types
Typescript is not a real standalone language. It's just javascript after all.

Try Dart, maybe you like it. It's like TS but with it's own runtime.

hpeter··on IBM to buy HashiCorp in $6.4B deal
That's interesting. I found Go to be a very productive and easy language, coming from Typescript.

But I had a similar experience like yours with PHP, I just couldn't get into it.

hpeter··on Meta does everything OpenAI should be
They help accelerate enshittification but they also pump the stock.
hpeter··on Memory-mapped IO registers in zig (2021)
Zig is a really nice language tho there are some things I also don't agree with. It's still far away from a stable 1.0 so maybe they work this out.
hpeter··on C++ coroutines do not spark joy (2021)
same. after using golang there is no going back for me. the new added features to c++ just make it more unappealing for me. less is more.
hpeter··on You won't find a technical co-founder
I think those requirements are for multiple people.

I can only fit a single one, Individual Contributor, I can do all the code and design and devops...

Leadership abilities? nah I'm an introvert

Shares the vision? Depends on the vision... no cash grabs pls

Available? Works for free? No and No

Same vibe? don't think so. Same age? maybe yes, I'm in my thirties.

Commitment to somebody else's idea after 2 meetings? No, there are trust issues if I don't know you already...

I dunno who made this list up but imho there are conflicts. You can't be a leader and commit to somebody else's idea unconditionally. You can't be a super fullstack dev and work for free.

hpeter··on Where are the supply chain safe programming languages?
Do not use dependencies. Implement everything from scratch. Maybe having a huge reviewed std library solves this, if you never need to import anything from a third party.

As long as there are supply chains there are attacks. reduce your dependencies to bare minimum.

hpeter··on Single dose of LSD provides immediate and lasting relief from anxiety, study say
Do not take LSD if you have anxiety. It can result in an awful experience.

Just sit down, relax and breathe, that's better than drugs.

hpeter··on I Regret My $46k Website Redesign (2022)
“How long is a piece of string?” their lead designer asked."

The longest I can do is char[tree fiddy]

hpeter··on I Regret My $46k Website Redesign (2022)
I like the old site more because it straight up shows me the picture of the device and not just a drawing.

The new checkout page look like it has better design, but the information content is the same.

I don't think the new site is worth more than 10k but agencies do tend to charge triple of actual value provided, since there are multiple salaries to pay, not just one freelance dev.

hpeter··on Sora: Creating video from text
One one side, we have people who are upset because the creators of the videos in the dataset used for teaching this language model were not compensated.

On the other hand, people find the tech very impressive and there are a lot of mind blowing use-cases.

Personally, this opens up the world for me to create video ads for software projects I create, since I have no financial resources or time to actually make videos, I only know how to code. So I find it pretty exciting. It's great for solo entrepreneurs.

hpeter··on Managing mutable data in Elixir with Rust
This is super cool. I learn something new every day.
hpeter··on Apple's iMessage avoids EU's Digital Markets Act regulation
The green bubbles will remain to coerce people to message IOS users over android as people favor blue over ugly green..

It's a marketing gimmick designed to lock users in using network effects.

These psychological tricks work the best on teenagers and apple have been targeting kids to make them customers for life.

hpeter··on Apple's iMessage avoids EU's Digital Markets Act regulation
IOS is the dominating mobile OS in Denmark, everyone I know uses iMessage.

I wonder if the 0.5 cent fee on free installs will change anything, will the train ticketing app start charging a subscription fee on IOS now that they need to pay per install Apple?

hpeter··on Apple's iMessage avoids EU's Digital Markets Act regulation
As an European who lived in multiple countries, I haven't used SMS in 10 years for anything other than 2FA.
hpeter··on Tenets
My browser can't run Delphi or Turbo Pascal.
hpeter··on Tenets
"HTML is not the mother language"

You don't need js to create a website, you only need HTML.

For dynamic UI you need a server, not javascript. Your server can render html, it doesn't have to serve json.

hpeter··on Who makes money when AI reads the internet for us?
Maybe creators need to write : "This is not allowed for AI to reproduce" in the beginning and then if somebody asks chatgpt to summarize it it could respond with the usual text like : As an AI language model, I am unable to engage with this content...
