hpb42··on Ask HN: Anyone know any funny programming jokes?
One can generalize this joke and use mathematical Induction to tell infinite jokes.
hpb42··on Why does Linux have so much trouble sleeping and waking?
If you are running a Linux distribution that uses systemd, you can check how long it takes to boot with

  $ systemd-analyze
  # if you prefer a nice diagram:
  $ systemd-analyze plot > boot-sequence.svg

My 6-year old laptop takes 7 seconds to boot (dual core i5, 8GB DDR3, SSD, ArchLinux). My previous computer used to take ~10 seconds do boot. If you don't have a bloated OS, there's no need for sleep/hibernate.

I guess Kernel/driver developers have a computer that boots fast as well, so they don't care about optimizing sleep/hibernate functionality?

That's very interesting. Thanks!

I'm curious about the Neural Engine cores. What software use this? Why would I want to buy a Neural Network coprocessor in my machine, instead of using that money for a better cpu/ram/ssd?

I'm a Physicist and open-source enthusiast from Brazil. Currently I'm finishing my Master's in Physics at University of São Paulo and working as a Python Engineer at startup in the field of Artificial Intelligence.

My Master's studies are almost done (I'm finishing the last chapters of my thesis) and I am looking for the next steps of my career. The simulations I'm writing for my Masters' are written in C++17, with Python for plotting the results. I am evaluating a Random Walk based solver for the Boolean Satisfiability Problem and studying the phase transition of random Boolean formulas.

Do you have a stash of cool magnets and shiny disks? I use dead HDD's disks as drink coasters. It's pretty cool.

I've heard a lot about Rust's "safety" things. But what are they? How does it compare with modern C++?
