hoyd··on NotepadNext – a cross-platform reimplementation of Notepad++
Nice work. Does it have auto-save, like npp?
hoyd··on 6174
I had a sitdown in the sofa today with my seven year old boy talking about 6174 and how all those numbers end up there, as well as three digits with 495. I wrote a simple python sript that we could use to go through a lot of numbers to show this. We also talked about how many steps needed to reach those constants. Then we talked about if there were eight steps for any number and we improved the script further, but found none. Goodl talk and sofa-time ;-)
hoyd··on Gentoo Linux Goes Binary
I never settled with Gentoo, but something about it made me interested. Not quite sure what.
hoyd··on On Pneumatic Tires
I lived a couple of years in Stonehaven, a lovely small town south of Aberdeen, Scotland. This town was the birthing place of Robert Thomson, the inventor of the pneumatic tyre.
hoyd··on Footsteps of pi
Funny, I did a similar exercise in 2019, https://earth.hoyd.net/visualizing-100k-decimals-of-pi-and-t... loved how it turned out. Even planned to make it into an art piece on the wall.
hoyd··on AI chemist could make oxygen on Mars
Me too
hoyd··on Why Is It So Difficult to Map the Ocean?
"Everything about the seafloor is bigger, bolder, and more extreme than the comparatively quiet terrain we know as land."

Well said :-)

hoyd··on The Svalbard fibre optic cable connection (2022)
The cable is connected to Breiviks på Andøy, which is in Vesterålen, not in the Lofoten Islands.
hoyd··on Starship’s second flight test
01:30:00 An exciting landing!
hoyd··on Ask HN: What space-related APIs exist out there?
A bit too much, but supercool non the less :-)
hoyd··on Ask HN: What space-related APIs exist out there?
I found this: https://api.nasa.gov and looked into the exoplanet archive, which was interesting, fex: "Confirmed planets in the Kepler field" https://exoplanetarchive.ipac.caltech.edu/cgi-bin/nstedAPI/n... but seems down?

Didn't see the https://data.nasa.gov site, will look into that, thanks :-)

hoyd··on Is the error code 404 Not Found based on a room at CERN or not? (2017)
oh the irony :-|
hoyd··on Is the error code 404 Not Found based on a room at CERN or not? (2017)
I submitted an url and appended (2017) to the title, did that cause the error in the url?
hoyd··on Why do old books smell so good?
Yes, that would be it. The word "gammel" means most of the times old, but I can see where it would be used as something rotten too.
hoyd··on Why do old books smell so good?
I once blogged about the lack of word for this smell[0], and came across someone else that has asked this[1] too. Just like 'petrichor' for the smell of fresh earth following rain.

I made up my own word for this, in Norwegian: 'Gammelbokduft'.

hoyd··on IRC is the only viable chat protocol (2022)
To preserve logs, I would ssh into a screen on a server that was connected.

hoyd··on I tested services to extract colors from image
Nice to see others need for this, and also experiencing differences. To add one more, i tried it on my hobby web app https://apps.hoyd.net/hexcolors/uploads/hex-background-promp...
hoyd··on ChatGPT and Code Interpreter = Magic
It works well in Norwegian so far
hoyd··on Met Office says Northern Lights will be visible in England tonight and tomorrow
Once Kristian Birkeland proved how northern lights actually worked based on his theory about it, the relation between particles from the sun, earths magnetic field and the poles, a string of norwegian pioneers studied the phenomena for a few decades. Up until 1960 actually. Then, some researchers from scandinavia and US teamed up to establish a facility for launching research rockets into the aurora, as balloons could not get high enough and satellites wasn't a thing really. They agreed on Andøya in northern norway as the perfect spot for such a rocket range. It was also directly under the northern lights oval too. Then in 18th august 1962, they launched the first rocket and has done so ever since. There are still lots to learn from the sun by studying the northern lights in the polar regions. A really exciting story actually.
hoyd··on Ask HN: Anyone else getting lots of Google Docs comment spam?
I've experienced that too.
hoyd··on Radar photos of moon's surface are highest resolution ever taken from Earth
Link to more pictures?
hoyd··on Lnav – An advanced log file viewer for the small-scale
Related to this, is there a tool like this, but that can show some kind of simple analytics, for example page views over a period of time from an access log produced by python html server.
hoyd··on One Thing – Put a single task or goal in your menu bar
I sometimes choose a password that writes out as a thing I want to remind myself of. Then every time I write it, i get reminded of it.
hoyd··on Ask HN: Why did Gmail become popular?
In addition to the other features mentioned, it was also the invite-only-effect in the beginning. I got an invite to create an account and it was exciting. I was then given invites to share with others too.
hoyd··on Tailscale Funnel
I love all the comments in the parenthesis.
