hownottowrite··on Citrix acquired and merged with Tibco for $16.5B
What year did I wake up in? Is this 2005?
hownottowrite··on Fossils reveal the deep roots of jawed vertebrates
Indeed, which is why I put the archive link underneath.
hownottowrite··on Fossils reveal the deep roots of jawed vertebrates
The NYT covered it yesterday

hownottowrite··on Google has added ads on both its search page and Chrome://newtab
Don’t equate precedent with morals.
hownottowrite··on Mcmaster.com is the best e-commerce site I've ever used
I see a couple other folks jumped in. It’s basically a way to estimate duties and taxes up front so the EU customer knows the full price before they order.

The reality it that most EU customers already know the price before they order (or have a good idea it’s going to be 20% more). But they like to pretend they don’t.

hownottowrite··on Mcmaster.com is the best e-commerce site I've ever used
DDP is probably the only good solution here for most EU customers, but frankly the hassle and expense of doing business in the EU is what keeps most US e-commerce companies from entering the market.

More reasons for a 90% top marginal tax rate
hownottowrite··on Color has been disappearing from the world
I do abstract paintings for fun. To be honest, they’re not that good but they are fun. Anyway, what I’ve notice though is that people tend to respond strongest to the brightest colors often with an exuberance that feels a bit like they are missing something in their lives.
hownottowrite··on Amazon to acquire maker of Roomba vacuum for roughly $1.7B
Fwiw, they’re not buying Roomba for the tech. They’re buying it for the brand and the customer base.
hownottowrite··on Elon Musk’s antics turn owners and would-be buyers against Tesla
His antics are only going to hurt their sales more as new (and frankly better) options hit the market.
hownottowrite··on How to drive away your best engineers
I don’t see “failing to fire bad engineers” on this list, which is a huge problem but easily fixable. A good engineer can put up with a lot of BS, but working with B and C level talent is a fast path to burnout.
hownottowrite··on Two decades of Alzheimer’s research was based on deliberate fraud
Yes indeed. The sexy world of academia. Fast cars and easy money.
hownottowrite··on Bear Blog – A privacy-first, fast blogging platform
So what you’re saying is that you are offering a blogging service that happens to have an open source platform behind it that one could self-host if desired.
hownottowrite··on Bear Blog – A privacy-first, fast blogging platform
What style?
hownottowrite··on Bear Blog – A privacy-first, fast blogging platform
The privacy-first platform that cannot be self-hosted. So many contradictions.
hownottowrite··on A Google engineer who thinks the company’s AI has come to life
I find it ironic that an inanimate corporate entity like Google, which enjoys many rights of personhood, is making decisions about whether an AI is sentient.
hownottowrite··on Sheryl Sandberg stepping down as Facebook COO
Which version actually worked?
hownottowrite··on Engineering students create edible adhesive tape to keep burrito wrapped tightly
Watch the Taco Chronicles on Netflix then reconsider your life choices.
hownottowrite··on When I tell the Windows Terminal team something is simple, I am "misguided"
Read the thread, read the posts, read this reply... it would've been trivial to write a nice apology and move on, but instead you tripped over your own ego (twice). Well played! Should've just let it go when you had the chance.

hownottowrite··on As climate fears mount, some are relocating within the US
“The Midwest didn’t appeal.”

Clearly climate change was the deciding factor. /s

hownottowrite··on How Intelligent Are Cats? (2004)
The real question isn’t how intelligent cats are but whether we’re smart enough to really tell. https://wwnorton.com/books/Are-We-Smart-Enough-to-Know-How-S...

hownottowrite··on I stopped advertising and nothing happened
These optimizations are great if you’re selling things people are looking for. However, when you’re selling something people want but don’t yet know it even exists, the problem is thornier.
hownottowrite··on Stephen E. Wilhite has died
I started at CompuServe in 1990. I met Steve a couple years later when I interviewed to join his team.

I didn’t make the cut and I thought he was a bit of a jerk during the interview. Turns out I was the jerk and Steve was actually being really kind to a kid who wasn’t even close to being ready for that level.

Anyway, what I can say is that Steve was a lot more than GIF. In fact, back then, no one really thought too much about it, but they thought a lot about Steve.

George Jones, another CompuServe alum, penned this a few years back. I think it’s a nice summary. https://web.archive.org/web/20220129204133/http://curious.ga...

hownottowrite··on Cities should not pay for new stadiums
This is happening in Northern Virginia right now. The state is going to create a control structure for a private city, provide unlimited debt funding, and lose significant tax revenues for decades to come. And for what? Bad football and more temporary food service/retail jobs?
hownottowrite··on Nukemap
I live 10 minutes from the White House. I don’t need this in my life.
hownottowrite··on Asian-Americans fight back against school discrimination
As far as Thomas Jefferson High School goes, this is a multi-decade issue. The Washingtonian covered it well in 2017 and it’s only gotten more complex since then: https://www.washingtonian.com/2017/04/26/is-the-no-1-high-sc...
hownottowrite··on Strange plant-like formation captured by Curiosity rover on Mars
Subsistence isn’t the actual threat to a Martian colony, and that is what is so maddening about it. We can go and we can figure out the technical hurdles. But even with those magical capabilities we cannot eliminate ourselves from the equation. The danger for a Martian colony will not be from Mars, but from the “Martians” (just as it is on Earth).
hownottowrite··on Strange plant-like formation captured by Curiosity rover on Mars
There’s always something cool to learn about geological processes, even basic examples like this one.
