houseofzeus··on Broadcom to acquire VMware for $61B
Docker didn't really attempt to monetize Kubernetes at all until the writing was on the wall, instead they had their own thing (Swarm) that they were pushing but most of the ecosystem went in the other direction.
houseofzeus··on Twitter Deal Temporarily on Hold
High on his own gas.
houseofzeus··on Missouri governor’s office responsible for teacher data leak
At the end of the day though, what are the actual consequences for him?
houseofzeus··on Microsoft to Acquire Activision Blizzard
> Microsoft Game Studios doesn't have a lot of market share in PC games besides Minecraft

Wow, that sucks. They should acquire someone with a bigger catalogue!

houseofzeus··on U.S. FAA clears 45% of commercial plane fleet after 5G deployed
The information provided at the time indicated 100 Mhz buffer would be enough, which the FCC doubled. Now the FAA are saying that in fact even 200+ Mhz buffer outside of the frequency that was ever allocated for this purpose is not enough for some altimeters.
houseofzeus··on U.S. FAA clears 45% of commercial plane fleet after 5G deployed
For perspective, elsewhere in the world it's already been rolled out - in some cases with less buffer than is proposed in the US. The carriers have already delayed their rollout multiple times and the FAA still hasn't been able to prove there is an impact, rather they keep issuing defensible statements that it could have an impact despite having had years to work on this.
houseofzeus··on U.S. FAA clears 45% of commercial plane fleet after 5G deployed
My read is either the FAA or the airlines or both want money re-allocated from the FCC spectrum sales or the carriers (or both) to retrofit their dated equipment.
houseofzeus··on AWS Private 5G
Well for one Soracom's homepage doesn't mention 5G (or private 5G) once...
houseofzeus··on Space debris forces astronauts on space station to take shelter in return ships
Now it's extra dead with no means of external control.
houseofzeus··on Rancher Desktop, a Docker Desktop Replacement
They missed the boat on this, there were rumors Microsoft offered as much as $4bn back in ~2016. Whether that's true or not, if there was an exit to be had that was around the time it would have been viable.
houseofzeus··on NFT projects are just MLMs for tech elites
This is about where I got to when pondering this with regards to NBA Top Shot:

1. Is it irrational to pay large sums of money to collect NFTs? Yes. 2. Is it irrational to pay large sums of money to collect physical cards? Also yes.

Regardless, we humans are weird and will do it anyway.

houseofzeus··on Jim Whitehurst to step down as IBM President
They were a publicly traded company and IBM offered something like $190 a share when they were trading around $120.
houseofzeus··on QEMU 6.0
I'm not as familiar with Hyper-V but certainly for KVM you would probably interact with it (indirectly) using virsh which I find pretty capable. No sane human should be interacting directly with the qemu command line if they can help it, it's written more for consumption by other software.
houseofzeus··on Cyberpunk 2077: How 2020’s biggest video game launch turned into a shambles
I really think it's mostly the issues with having advertized it for last gen consoles and then not actually delivered a playable experience on them. It sounds like there are indeed a lot of other bugs, but those seem like issues they would have been permitted to patch their way out of over time.

COD Cold War is another big title this year and is quite buggy, but it is playable in spite of those bugs on all the systems it was advertised to work on.

houseofzeus··on Rocky Linux: A CentOS replacement by the CentOS founder
The kind of people that are up in arms that CentOS 8 isn't going to be supported through to 2029 are using it because it has outdated packages.
houseofzeus··on Rocky Linux: A CentOS replacement by the CentOS founder
Agree, I'd imagine most of them are also still on 7, which the lifecycle didn't change for and goes to 2024 even if they just stay where they are.
houseofzeus··on Oracle Moving HQ to Austin
Depends where you go, it's not like there are no other tech companies in Austin for example.
houseofzeus··on Skip Level Meeting Guide for Leaders
I would see that kind of group thing as more about building some rapport in a less scary environment than a skip level so that they feel if something was up they can come to you.
houseofzeus··on Skip Level Meeting Guide for Leaders
I think what gets lost is that it's your 1:1, not the manager's. Same when you go to a skip level.

If they are the one driving the agenda it is indeed probably going to be a waste of time.

This cartoon is a useful prompter for different things to think about going into them:

houseofzeus··on Dan Kohn has died
Even in other countries where it's covered they often wont start screening for it until later in life when you are considered at higher risk (but you can get it much younger).
houseofzeus··on How Tiffany moved 114k gems without getting robbed
Does NYC have the concept of "paid duty"? Where a private company can pay for police to cover their event?
houseofzeus··on Red Hat Cloud Forms migrating to IBM Cloud Pak
It's interesting that even on an article about a non-Linux Red Hat product, the answers to your question predominately focused on only the Linux part of the picture.

From this I take it that most of the folks complaining about what is happening to CloudForms in here at least don't actually know what it is.

houseofzeus··on A Manager’s Guide to Kubernetes Adoption
There are bottlenecks in the Kubernetes architecture that start popping up once you cross about 250-300 Pods per node (the published limit in the K8S docs is actually 100).

This is typically more of an issue when running the cluster directly on large bare-metal nodes because in the cloud or on virtualization the host gets split into more smaller nodes from a K8S perspective.

Obviously this also depends on the characteristics of the workload, if you have a lot of monoliths that you have only barely containerized the Pod per Node limit may not be a concern at all even on bare-metal.

houseofzeus··on Hong Kong leader to announce formal withdrawal of extradition bill
Exactly, the protesters have to win every day. China only has to win once.
houseofzeus··on A Manager’s Guide to Kubernetes Adoption
Do you find you are getting a dense enough # of pods per host on bare-metal?
houseofzeus··on Melissa Di Donato Appointed CEO of SUSE
My interpretation is that they and Red Hat are just as "independent" as each other. That is they can do whatever they want as long as they keep making money...but if they don't then they can and will be course corrected by their respective owners.
houseofzeus··on Open Distro for Elasticsearch
At that point it becomes about the nuance of defining what is really best for open source. Is it long term maintenance of ElasticSearch as it exists today, in which case I agree Elastic has the best incentive to keep it going, or is it net new open source code in which case Amazon is bringing new plugins to the table. I suspect in practice this is more of a spectrum than an obvious either/or.
houseofzeus··on Open Distro for Elasticsearch
While I might hope for more I don't expect a company to make decision any other way.
houseofzeus··on Open Distro for Elasticsearch
I didn't pose the original question, but in my mind "right" here is simply, made the best decision available to them at the point in time.
houseofzeus··on Open Distro for Elasticsearch
The VC funding is what appears to introduce it, but really it should be there from the start. By that I mean VC funding forces the founders to consider that simply having a viable project does not mean you have a viable product, but founders who don't realize that are on a path to this destination already before the VC turns up, the VC just accelerates it.
