houseofshards··on There Have Probably Been Aliens
Content of the article is pretty information, but worst clickbait title of the year. At the risk of alienating some fraction of HN community (no pun intended), I'm going to say this is what you get when trying to chase the likes of Gawker (again, no pun intended).
houseofshards··on Typos in search queries at Khan Academy
Cool ! At some point, you could also consider building an index: retrieve "possible candidate corrections" by issuing a query against this index, and score the candidates using some combination of features (such as edit distance, phonetic similarity etc).
houseofshards··on Earth receiving mysterious radio signals
What does the article mean by "fast" radio signals ? Don't radio waves always travel at the speed of light ?
houseofshards··on Online Porn Could Be the Next Big Privacy Scandal
does it mean if there is a browser just for browsing non-login sites and doing nothing else (do all browsing that requires a login or identification of any kind from a different browser), this problem can be prevented ?
houseofshards··on Simulating Monty Hall: data beats intuition. Sometimes
Neat ! Here is a cool visualization: http://blog.vctr.me/monty-hall/
houseofshards··on Inside the food industry
Relevant here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Food,_Inc. (the last time I checked this was available on Netflix)
houseofshards··on The Worst Way to Fire Someone: I Was There
it is available for reading even without the account. At least works for me.
houseofshards··on Wanderers: a short film of humanity's expansion into the Solar System [video]
Wow ! This is beautiful. Stunning graphics + Sagan's legendary voice almost left me in tears.
houseofshards··on Job brokers steal wages and entrap Indian tech workers in US
The worst part here is that H1B visas allocated to these scumbag companies end up starving genuine companies of these visas.
houseofshards··on In conversation with Marc Andreessen
" it's a shame that a person can start off knowing so little about the industry they end up having such a huge impact upon"

>> Even if the assertion (that Zuckerberg did not know about Netscape before meeting Marc) is true, I do not agree that it is a shame. Perhaps just points to how young the tech industry is and how much more opportunity still exists to build great companies.

houseofshards··on The surprising and continuing influence of Swami Vivekananda (2012)
Not sure why this article is on Hacker News.
houseofshards··on Rethinking the origins of the universe
Isn't there a lot of observational evidence for black holes ?
houseofshards··on Why didn’t the Universe become a black hole?
Doesn't this question have something to do with uniform distribution of matter and energy in the early universe ? The details elude me right now, but I heard a talk/panel discussion about this - basically the hypothesis presented was that in the early universe, matter had a very uniform distribution as it was confined to a very tony space. This means a black hole could not have formed since there was no point whose gravitational force was greater than any other point.
houseofshards··on Mystery in the Perseus Cluster
Precisely ! Fe XXV ? That sounds a bit like descendent from a long line of monarchs.
houseofshards··on July 20, 1969: One Giant Leap For Mankind (2013)
"When we left Earth" - just started watching this. Great !! Thank you for recommending this, good sir.
houseofshards··on Tesla Model III to challenge BMW 3 Series
If you notice, III is 'E' rotated counterclockwise by 90 degrees - subtle but genius response to Ford's "hey Tesla, you cannot use Model E. If you do, we will sue you!"
houseofshards··on Developments in Quantum Physics Are About to Transform Our Daily Lives
This article has a completely misleading title. Or maybe the author's arrow of time is reversed and he thinks the past is the future.
houseofshards··on Anti-Tesla sentiment and the death of optimism
As a consequence, nuclear scientists/physicists of the Cold War era are analogous to patent lawyers today. Kind of sad don't you think ? :)
houseofshards··on When Everyone Wants To Watch 'House Of Cards,' Who Pays?
WTF ?? This argument is so ridiculous. "ISP" stands for Internet Service Provider as in, an entity that provides an internet service (and maintains the necessary infrastructure). That is why people pay them.
houseofshards··on Satellite photos of possible crash site of MH370
Question: why are they timestamped March 16, 2014 ?
houseofshards··on Did Malaysian Airlines 370 disappear using SIA68/SQ68 (another 777)?
my guess is that if it was hijacked by terrorists, the act is yet to come. They are after the plane, not the people.
houseofshards··on Did Malaysian Airlines 370 disappear using SIA68/SQ68 (another 777)?
An aviation noob here. I have a question:

If the flight starts another journey from wherever it is, will it be possible to track it via radar ?

houseofshards··on Did Malaysian Airlines 370 disappear using SIA68/SQ68 (another 777)?
>> A ransom demand would have been made by now.

That is exactly what I am scared of. That the intent was never to demand a ransom. Obviously they were after the plane - to use it as a weapon. Or use it as a carrier of some weapon.

houseofshards··on How Fat May Hurt the Brain, and How Exercise May Help
> Are you referring to his ego?

There, sir, take my upvotes.

houseofshards··on Ask HN: Should I quit my job if I am not learning?
Thanks for your input !

"How long do you have to go? For me, experiences, especially the bad ones, have been valuable" - can you elaborate ? How can I make the most of my time here ?

houseofshards··on Ask HN: Should I quit my job if I am not learning?
well, creating metrics to measure product usage, creating dashboards that help summarize and visualize these metrics isn't exactly in the same boat as working on search relevance. Most of the dashboards in my company are created using tools like Tableau or some JS/Python/MySQL. At best I am learning how to hack together some simple web.
