hos234··on Cédric Villani: mathematician challenging to be Paris mayor
Looks like another Macron. Well done.
hos234··on Twitter to ban political advertising
Salute to Twitter for doing something proactive and not just reacting post facto. That's what leadership is.
hos234··on Ask HN: What's the best way to find and collaborate in open source projects?
https://summerofcode.withgoogle.com/organizations/

Use the list to get a sense of whats out there. Then track a couple devs doing things you like. Fix/file simple bugs, improve their docs, scripts etc on their repos. That usually opens doors. Preferably target people who communicate well, respond fast, and are constantly improving things. Disciplined people usually are the best to work with.

hos234··on Close Encounter with a Gigantic Jet
I hope someday we learn to make controllable mini-storms. All kinds of interesting things to study thanks to the energy levels.

From wikipedia - "Scientists estimate that a tropical cyclone releases heat energy at the rate of 50 to 200 exajoules (10^18 J) per day, equivalent to about 1 PW (10^15 watt). This rate of energy release is equivalent to 70 times the world energy consumption of humans and 200 times the worldwide electrical generating capacity, or to exploding a 10-megaton nuclear bomb every 20 minutes"

hos234··on Ask HN: Why are we not making the most of the recent UFO reports?
Skunkworks & Northrop Grumman sites are all within a 100 miles of the sightings. That's too much of a coincidence for me. "Highly advanced" projects coming out of those locations, usually run decades before anyone external even hears about them.
hos234··on Facebook staff demand Zuckerberg limit lies in politcal ads
It's not just SV. Power dynamics within orgs have changed and are changing.

Traditional Hierarchies are struggling because hyper-connecitivity within the org and to the outside world have increased exponentially. This diffuses power at every level within a hierarchy. You can't have power over someone 2 levels down if their network is as influential as your own.

hos234··on Instagram now forces people to sign in to view public profiles
> People just don't talk about them very clearly, or document them

Because I am pretty sure it violates Twitter API use. Twitter has no incentive to allow data moving off their network.

hos234··on ‘Silicon Valley,’ Darker Than Ever, Captures the Bleak Mood of Tech
There is a big difference between people trying to do good, fucking up, and getting trapped by their fuckups and people who only care about themselves.

It's easy to confuse the two groups and think a distinction doesn't exist.

It's not at all complicated to get smart idealistic people who fuck up whether in Wall St or SV, to doubt themselves, get defensive and then cynical. There are lots of idealists who have turned cynical over their careers. And it's very beneficial for all kinds of parties, to strip that idealism away and just harvest the smarts using guilt and shame, fear and doubt.

And it works very well on those who aren't clear about their Values and Needs, or those who don't have experience with failure.

Yet even after all that, you will find two different groups. Why? Because there will always be idealists who don't turn cynics, even after fucking up.

There is nothing straight forward about recovering from fuckups. For some it takes time to see their mistakes. Some are able to openly process or talk about their mistakes (which society loves to then exploit or pass judgement on). And others get highly defensive and come across or get painted as oblivious to their mistakes. These different routes add to the impression of hypocrisy (that everyone likes to take a dig at and laugh about).

hos234··on The Nature of Thomas Edison’s Genius
This is the usual 'us VS them'/'innovator vs business' narrative. But its an old narrative you find everywhere from the Wright Brothers to Heaviside to Marconi to Steve Jobs etc etc.

It's also an unhelpful/superficial narrative that creates automatic misunderstandings and mistrust as soon as speedbumps are hit, when science/tech and business interact. It gives me heartburn whenever I get pushed into a room where science/tech ppl and biz ppl are trying to dominate each other. Because they have been feed this self reinforcing narrative that one side has to win.

The real Tesla/Edison story, is the innovator was a bad businessman and the businessman was a bad innovator(Edison was barely educated). They both squandered a whole lot of time and resources because they couldn't work together. And progress happened in spite of all the drama between the two. That's the real story. And it plays out constantly even today.

The narrative needs to change. Because in today's fast changing world both sides cannot survive without each other.

Agree but many of the issues at the top of the food chain are like solving Family Dysfunction. Dad is the problem. Dad doesn't listen to anyone. Dad pays the bills.

hos234··on Mark Zuckerberg is struggling to explain why Breitbart belongs on Facebook News
Well we already know, if you put the ideas of Galileo, Copernicus and Kepler next to those of the Church, and allow the people to figure things out for themselves, it takes a few hundred years. And most often those paths of learning, involve violence and domination by both sides.

Learning takes a long time. People are incompetent at doing it by themselves even with health, wealth and intelligence. They need Skilled Teachers, Coaches and Counselors to do it well, which is why we don't leave kids at the Library for 18 years but at Schools. And even then they take time to learn.

The News Industry never will play that role. But some of them pretend to do it and we can't let them.

I think the left/right debate hides the fact there are a class of people these days who have discovered they can pay their mortgages by pretending to "inform and educate".

They need to be filtered out irrespective of being on the left or right.

hos234··on Economists are now admitting that they were wrong about globalization
I don't think economists are lying about it. Krugman atleast keeps posting graphs about the low odds of unemployed men over 35(?) getting back into the workforce. If I remember right, he brings it up to push Infrastructure Spending (2-3 Trillion much overdue since everything is falling apart/also has bipartisan support). Something like that would produce that "glut of jobs".
hos234··on The American Dream Is Alive in China
How do you know what the truth is - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Censorship_in_China
hos234··on The American Dream Is Alive in China
False dichotomy. Large Infra projects need huge land parcels. What do you think your options are in China if the govt decides it wants your land?

They get away with all kinds of abnormal activity because most of their citizens are still poor. Once people have resources they won't bend over as they once did. I doubt their rate of progress will continue as it did over the last 2 decades. Things are going to get more complex for them not less.

hos234··on Why Aren’t We Curious About the Things We Want to Be Curious About?
My point is, its because it isn't associated (in the minds of most) with survival/success/growth of the novelty seeker or a group requiring a novelty seeker, do we end up with the question - Why aren't we curious about we want to be?

Lots of "villages"/groups/teams/orgs have misunderstandings of the role of the novelty seeker. And lots of novelty seekers have misunderstandings of how they can fit in.

hos234··on Why Aren’t We Curious About the Things We Want to Be Curious About?
The answer lies in understanding the Utility of the Novelty Seeker to a Group.

If groups don't need it, expect novelty seeking to be snuffed out and fast. Don't complain about it just go look for a group that needs you.

Not everyone is a novelty seeker - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Novelty_seeking

Small populations don't need too many novelty seekers. If everyone in a village is curious about Tigers, sooner or later everyone in the village would be dead. As populations grow the number of Novelty seekers increase and sooner or later the village has knowledge of how to tame the Tiger.

In terms of groups or teams that work on problems that have known solutions, having Novelty seekers around can be a big distraction/waste of time and energy as they goof off and wander.

But for teams working on problems unknown, Novelty seekers are a must have. Nothing is guaranteed when working on unknowns, but the team will learn more/make progress with a Novelty Seeker around than without.

While sites like HN attract Novelty Seekers from all over and there is some spillover into startups (many working on problems with unknowns) this process of matching Novelty seekers to groups that need them has WAYS to go.

We do it in very inefficient ways and lacking awareness. Sometimes we misidentify them (lot of people pretend to be novelty seekers cause it gets them on teams) OR Novelty seekers are put in charge OR they want to be in charge Or we think we need a Novelty seeker on staff 24x7 when actually we just need them to come in and take a look at a specific problem once a week or once a month. These mistakes can be avoided if you know the role the Novelty Seeker plays in society and what problems they are needed for.

Yeah agree...too much damage. And not just in the US. The polarization has amplified all over the map.
hos234··on 7 in 10 say US ‘on the edge of civil war’
> public blames social media, the news media

The public got that right. Maybe there needs to be a wall between the two. No social media propped up content allowed on News Sites and No news content/journo/talking head content on social media sites.

People who want news go to the news sites. This way I don't have get sucked into debates my grandmom is having.

hos234··on Edward Snowden on The Joe Rogan Experience [video]
I said know the history. Such programmes were shut down in the past. Knowing how and why doesn't just reduce anxiety, it gives you a bag of tools to improve on. Assuming everyone knows the history is a big mistake. On top of that there are lot of characters around who benefit from ignorance and stoking anxiety.
