hos234··on Corporate Spies Are Watching Organized Labor
This works the other way too.

Corporate power resides in hubs and connectors that can be identified and disconnected to weaken the entire hierarchy. Lot of movements succeed because the hubs and connectors shift loyalty.

Niall Ferguson has written a good book [The Square and the Tower] analyzing Historical Events from a network theoretic perspective rather than the usual historical perspective of studying just the top most person(node) in the hierarchy. It has a ton of examples of how all powerful hierarchies devolve.

hos234··on EU antitrust regulators say they are investigating Google's data collection
Problem is new issues will keep cropping up every 2 days. And govt regulators have to keep reacting.

Putting pressure on Google requires seriously increasing competition.

Let the local units rebrand and compete against each other. Maybe even auction them off to other big players. Whatever needs to be done to even the playing field. Google need a nice kick in the ass for their own good health.

hos234··on EU antitrust regulators say they are investigating Google's data collection
Took 30 years and in that time the internet was born. Key is to keep creating conditions where they compete with each other. Nobody wins overnight if the game has good rules.
hos234··on EU antitrust regulators say they are investigating Google's data collection
Search engine can be broken up regionally and the regional versions allowed to compete with each other globally. So Google France competes with Google Germany competes with Google Spain etc. This happened with Ma Bell - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breakup_of_the_Bell_System

I don't think you need to bring quantum computing into the picture. For example "naturally" 3D printing a Mango takes a few years. Just drop a seed in the right place on earth and wait. Isn't that computing on the substrate of the universe?

Are you asking if nature can be coaxed into doing it in a few seconds or a day? Or maybe you are not bothered about time and want to drop in that seed and grow a chair? The answer is probably yes to both. It will just take some time to get there. I don't think quantum computing will be required but who knows...

hos234··on Disproved Discoveries That Won Nobel Prizes (2015)
Well humans are human. Mistakes happen and as long as they aren't increasing over time, it's all cool.

Awards don't just exist to award the individual.

In polarizing times, where the instinct is to create more conflict as a path to resolving conflict, what many of the Peace Prize winners have done, is to remind everyone that alternate non-obvious paths exist.

hos234··on Michael Apted's “Seven Up” series is reaching its conclusion
Yup easy to get depressed about this stuff. It would be a better show if they paused it at critical moments and allowed an Allison Gopnik to talk about child development, a Jonathan Haidt to talk about motivation, a John Gottman on relationships etc etc. Lots and lots of teachable moments

It's a great show, but to expect people to arrive at healthy/positive conclusions by themselves isn't realistic. There is too much information presented.

It's sort of like handing Copernicus, Brahe and Keplers observations of decades worth of planetary motion to everyone and expecting people to work out Keplers Laws and Gravity by themselves. Not going to happen. It requires a whole lot of deep cognition for decades to make meaning out of all that data and that too if you are surrounded by the right people.

So whatever it is stirring in you, know that this is the age of knowledge, and use such programmes as jumping off points to go look for the best teachers to process things. It's easy to find them these days and there are so many out there.

hos234··on Digital Tools I Wish Existed
Also all the individual effects get exponentially amplified when dealing with orgs/groups/teams being hit by/creating their own info tsunamis.
hos234··on How can you know what news is real?
I get my news from PewDiePie
hos234··on Ask HN: How do you convince people to work for you as a non-exciting startup?
You don't. It works only after you get enough funding to afford them. Initially you just stay focused on getting simple things done. And done well. That attracts better people through your satisfied customers and investors.
hos234··on Go master Lee Se-dol says he quits, unable to win over AI Go players
That depends on whether "Everything" is finite or infinite.
hos234··on I'm not burned out, I'm pissed off
There is a ton of free software. Price is not up just because of IP law. It's up because running and maintaining Wikipedia for example has a price even though most of the stack is free.
hos234··on The Dawn of a New Command Line Interface (2017)
I have been looking for something like jupyter notebooks or matplotlib interactive mode that works in the terminal. Meaning I type in a command and if output is an image or video or interactive graph it shows up in the terminal itself. How much time would it take to create something like that with arcan? Or something like that already available?
hos234··on Ask HN: Quitting Big Tech, what is it like?
Work on your network.

If you aren't good at networking atleast put in work to know people who know people.

The advantage big orgs provide is basically a network of specialists you can count on to compensate for all your weaknesses and limitations.

If you have your own such network the transition isn't too bad.

hos234··on Google Fires Four Workers, Including Staffer Tied to Protest
Google is a political entity. Anyone controlling info flow is.

There are lot of people in Google deluding themselves that this is not true, while taking decisions that effect millions of people. Who elected them? That contradiction will always create political tensions.

If they don't want to be political they should stick to tech like phones and browsers and sell off Search and YouTube. Until that happens don't call polical objections and resistance wrong.

hos234··on The Simulation Argument and the Simulation Barrier

hos234··on Ask HN: Could AI make a comic book if it scanned enough comic books?
Why not? They have done it for movie scripts - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunspring

It would be interesting to see what it generates from a Moebius or Miyazaki Corpus

hos234··on Elon says Tesla received 146,000 orders for its Cybertruck after botched debut
Musk is all about Mass Marketing - larger the acquired audience larger the sales, and he clearly does that better than most.
hos234··on Small share of U.S. adults produce majority of tweets on national politics
It's not over. Value might appear diluted because of the ever increasing noise, but people will still look to say a Dexter Filkins for signal. Where else are you going to find that kind of signal?
hos234··on Elon says Tesla received 146,000 orders for its Cybertruck after botched debut
He did manage to generate a whole bunch of press. I can't remember when I last read an article about a new Truck.
hos234··on What I have learned from my suicidal patients
My point is someone else has to validate the decision.

And when you allow it sooner or later you will hear "Epstein/Khashoggi/that Uygur/this narco cop" were troubled souls and we were just helping them.

hos234··on What I have learned from my suicidal patients
It's not straight forward. Someone has to be involved in the process of validating that decision and then we get these kind of clowns - https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/health/news/4215059/Dignita...
