hos234··on Statement on the Purpose of a Corporation
He is correct. I don't know why you are getting downvoted.
hos234··on We Have Ruined Childhood
Newton's father died when he was 3 months old and his mother ditched him as a kid and when she returned years later made him quit school to take care of the pigs. The reason he went on to become the Isaac Newton everyone knows, was because of the role all the other Adults around him played, not his parents.

Don't write off that kid.

I teach part time and see this a lot. Especially from fellow teachers. Oh this kid has an alcoholic abusive dad, that kid has a mom with cancer, those 2 have family members in jail etc etc, followed by go easy on the struggling kid or this kid has no hope etc. If the kid flunks a test or skips class let it slide etc.

All this compounds the issue. What is required is the opposite of just sympathy.

Help them find their strengths and interests. Show them how to focus on positives and tune out negatives. Encourage whatever small steps you see them taking. Sensitize the other kids around them to be supportive. Show them examples of resilience and what it takes to be resilient. All these small things add up. Basically don't focus on the parent, focus on things you can do for the kid.

It's very hard to reprogram dysfunctional adults and get them to change, but kids are very different story. And there are few things more beautiful and satisfying, than watching a kid who has struggled for years and years, overcome and kick ass.

hos234··on Media Can’t Stop Presenting Horrifying Stories as ‘Uplifting’ Perseverance Porn
I like Bernie, but it's not simple. Canada has 60 shrinks per 100k ppl while the US has 4. Universal healthcare is not going to increase the number of shrinks over night.

Another thing with the "all other western nations" line is the population in the US. There is really no western or "developed" nation with anywhere close to same number of people.

hos234··on Google Plans to Deprecate FTP URL Support in Chrome
They aren't evil man. They are just well programmed robots constantly searching for things to over-optimize. They hit their metrics every day and then plug into their charging stations. That's it.

Give it a few years and they will deprecate Android for security reasons.

hos234··on I've reproduced 130 research papers about “predicting the stock market”
There are no winning strategies. Its all BS.

There are people who are addicted to tracking weather fluctuations on Pluto and there are people who are not.

hos234··on Google Employee Writes Memo About ‘The Burden of Being Black at Google’
I disagree. I personally get cheesed off with psychologists and counselors who I don't feel a connect with. Imho best one's are those that know what is involved in creating an empathetic connection. Sport psychologists are much more interesting to me in that sense cause they can't pretend not to be invested in the person or the team winning.
hos234··on Nvidia CEO says Google is the only customer building its own silicon at scale
People are all full of foresight until their foresight doesn't work. Which is most of the time when working at the cutting edge of Tech. That's when companies crash and burn. Intel has not, despite missing the boat on big calls almost 10 to 15 times now. What does that say about Intel? People think missing the call is a sign of bad management.

Bad management is when your company evaporates because you make one bad call.

Management gets points for surviving and then fighting back despite being wrong. And when you look at Intel's history, there are few companies on the planet who have managed to do that multiple times. They have a good mix of people who know what they are doing technically AND people who do whatever it takes to keep the company from sinking when those bad technical calls happen.

If Nvidia survives whatever their next bad call maybe expect them to start looking more and more like Intel.

hos234··on A Walk in Hong Kong
> The protesters learned in 2014 that having leaders was a weakness. Once the leadership was arrested, the heart went out of the occupy movement, and it lost momentum. So in 2019, there is no leadership at all.

This part seems a little naive to me. Protests that have produced outcomes (in atleast a power shift) have all had Leaders and new political parties forming. Whether in India after the anticorruption/gangrape protests in 2013-14, Greece economic crisis in 2008, Right wing rise all across Europe thanks to the immigration issues. All these movements have had leaders who got arrested multiple times.

hos234··on Germany to close all of its coal-fired power plants over the next nineteen years
The problem with telling people they need to be "more scientific and less emotional" when dealing with fear or threats, is that it doesn't work.

If they knew how to be more logical, there wouldn't be a problem in the first place. They don't. And just saying you "should" is not enough. It doesn't enable them to be more logical.

Communication that produces better outcomes requires to put the focus on why the threat isn't a threat and STOP. There is no need to tell people, beyond that they are illogical in the way they are handling fear. Good communicators, with the skill to reduce threat perception of everyone in the room do it all the time. And they produce better outcomes.

hos234··on Counterintuitive physics property found to be widespread in living organisms
Well put. The history of science should be taught more and deeply.

That said, given how much the total number of scientists/ engineers/curious people with resources has grown, it feels like, for any work happening in one corner of the world with a particular cognitive blind spot, you can find one in another corner without it.

hos234··on Advertisers Blacklist Hard News, Including Trump, Fearing Backlash
Yup interesting trend. The real story is the public has made this happen.

Given the kind of cut throat competition that exists, Marketing manager don't really get "fed up". They are more focused on hitting their weekly numbers, than on where the numbers come from. It's all the screen grabs and naming and shaming on social media that makes them notice and change tack.

I see the public pressure getting more organized and targeted in future.

hos234··on I feel like im talking to the borg
It is Pavlov's dog experiment, where instead of the bell, you have a like/retweet Count conditioning and reinforcing behavior. Natural human interaction has never had a number placed next to every thought and utterance.

The numbers have fucked up the way people think and behave.

hos234··on Woman survives fall from plane after parachute fails
I know this lunatic who is into base jumping. And according to him, if the body isn't in the right position within a few seconds of jumping you are dead. Dumbest sport on the planet.
hos234··on India Shut Down Kashmir’s Internet Access
Well India has 20-30 odd states that are each, as distinct as countries in Europe. So answers to your questions lie in understanding how they have stayed integrated inspite of all the differences.
hos234··on Netflix’s biggest bingers get hit with higher internet costs
Competition between telcos is the answer. In many developed countries the Telco wars/market capture happened long long ago. In most cases there were just one or two winners, who then had no great incentive to upgrade infra. In the markets were the wars are ongoing, low rates will last until some player wins.
hos234··on A Novel Concept: Silent Book Clubs Offer Introverts a Space to Socialize
Similar to HN in some ways. There is not much small talk happening here. And no obligation for anyone to talk about some preassigned subject.
hos234··on Younger Americans less trusting of other people, institutions
Learning takes time. Most 5th graders have access to all the info 10th graders have, that doesn't mean they are ready to solve 10th grade problems.
hos234··on Teen's tweets from her smart fridge go viral after mother confiscates phone
My kids have access to the comp in the living room when their devices get confiscated. The punishment being they loose their privacy while still having access.
hos234··on Younger Americans less trusting of other people, institutions
Good attitude.

What I don't like is Adults telling kids, it's all on them to make things better. It's not on them. These Adults are the kind who don't know what else to do, and no one should be paying attention to them.

hos234··on Chinese military entering Shenzen, just across the border with Hong Kong
It's a fragile kind of power. If Xi croaks tomorrow morning, god knows whether the current power structures will stay intact. There are lots and lots of factions that have very different interests.
hos234··on Why Does Infrastructure Cost So Much?
He is right in the sense when local bodies have decent leadership good things happen. But who wants to go work in local govt? There lies the problem.
hos234··on Ask HN: What would the Mark Zuckerberg of 2019 use in his dorm to build his site
The only difference today is the number of platforms and browsers your code has to run on. And there are a zillion JS libraries to simplify that problem.

The main thing is to just pick one that is popular and has been around for a couple years (not something just released) and start coding.

Work on your JS fundamentals - https://github.com/getify/You-Dont-Know-JS

On the backend, use google cloud or azure. There is a ton of code already written for any kind of app/website usecase you can ever imagine. Just reuse it.

Today's Mark Zuckerberg would just be plugging in piece that already exist. Focusing less on code and more on the User needs.

hos234··on Russia Says Small Nuclear Reactor Blew Up in Deadly Accident

hos234··on Social exclusion fuels extremism in young men
Top mind at work here. How can we isolate it and increase world productivity?
hos234··on China successfully launches its largest reusable rocket
It is news because everyone else (Europe, Japan, Russia, India) have started RLV projects to catch up with SpaceX. And it shows who is moving fastest. No surprises that it's China. Just watch how long it takes for the rest to get to this stage.

hos234··on The Problem at Yale Is Not Free Speech

There too an empire was in decline.

hos234··on Telegram introduces feature to prevent users from texting too often in a group
Once upon a time that was called a chat room. You entered when you wanted to socialize and left when you were done. Which is more in tune with natural group interactions in real life.

This group chat BS was cooked up more so app devs could hit engagement metrics to satisfy braindead unimaginative investors.

hos234··on Who Owns Huawei?
So govt bureaucrats are driving innovation? To the point where they create market leading mega corps. Is that the claim?

Sounds like magic if you have ever met government bureaucrats.

hos234··on YouTube lets biggest stars off the hook for breaking rules, moderators say
It's possible. The counts (like/view/click/retweet/upvote etc) effect what content creators produce. It's the Control Variable in a Feedback Process.

Just like the news shows, radio/podcasters and comedians decide what gets the largest audience by looking at specific metrics. But in this case Twitter/Youtube/Insta etc have control over When, What and How they show metrics to content producers. Turning these knobs changes behavior. It is still early days and the big tech firms are just waking up to the possibilities.
