horsemessiah··on GitHub was down
Wtf is going on at Github? They're having outages almost every other day.

August had 11 incidents it seems. September already has 3.

horsemessiah··on Hertz, the original meme stock, is turning out to be worthless
Americans always love tying things back to attacking China.
horsemessiah··on Voters rejecting the war on drugs is a win for public health
You're not wrong, but arresting people for possession doesn't help them either. And I can definitely tell you drugs aren't hard to find as it is.
horsemessiah··on Absent aid, few US cities will be able to avoid austerity
Reaganonmics has been a disaster for my generation.
horsemessiah··on Microsoft to acquire ZeniMax Media and Bethesda Softworks for $7.5B
Another example of capitalism tending towards monopoly.
horsemessiah··on Trump’s WeChat curbs halted by judge on free speech concerns
> no rights This is not true.

> Uyghur genocide This is a lie being spread by far right fundamentalist Adrien Zenz that the U.S. media had eaten up.

horsemessiah··on Six months in, N95 mask shortages persist
This is what is known as "anarchy of production" which is a key feature of capitalism. A global crisis like this is not compatible with our existing economic systems.
horsemessiah··on The Fed now owns nearly 1/3 of all U.S. mortgages
Markets are basically anarchy... there are countless examples of markets inefficiently allocating resources (homes, for one). Not sure I buy this.
horsemessiah··on Amazon deletes job listings for analysts to track ‘labor organizing threats’
Teachers unions are definitely not a net negative...
horsemessiah··on Why we are suing the Administration
The U.S. has 22% of the worlds prisoners, despite only having 4% of the population, if you really wanna talk about prison.
horsemessiah··on TikTok Inc. vs. U.S. Department of Commerce
Could the U.S. govt not subpoena a U.S. company for information, giving them the same power people are worried about China having?
horsemessiah··on TikTok and the Sorting Hat
My father made this argument to me, almost verbatim. It's definitely out there.
horsemessiah··on Experts recommend Machine Learning books
Yup!
horsemessiah··on TikTok’s Chinese owner offers to forego stake to clinch U.S. deal – sources
Why doesn't the government pass laws preventing this, instead of banning one particular app?
horsemessiah··on TikTok’s Chinese owner offers to forego stake to clinch U.S. deal – sources
Congress should pass laws in retaliation then, not the President.
horsemessiah··on TikTok’s Chinese owner offers to forego stake to clinch U.S. deal – sources
The solution would be to pass a law akin to the GDPR then. There is no need to go through executive action.

The U.S. is not supposed to be authoritarian like China is.

horsemessiah··on Experts recommend Machine Learning books
State and Revolution is where I'd recommend people start for ML ;)
horsemessiah··on Editorial board of Index and more than 70 staff members resign
Check out Bolivia, Honduras, and the failed attempt at Venezuela for some more recent examples within the last 15 years.
horsemessiah··on Resignation Letter
This is simply not true. Looking at the three mainstream cable channels (Fox, CNN, MSNBC) Fox hardly ever critical, MSNBC is almost exclusively critical, and CNN is pretty in between. Fox is by far the most popular of these three.

Similarly, the NYTimes and Washington Post are usually pretty critical of Trump (unless he's bombing people, in which case they love him) and the WSJ are somewhere in between.

Then, consider that Americans are increasingly not getting their news from these sources and podcasts, blogs, social media, etc. are becoming the primary source of news for many people.

All this to say, to claim 97% of media is critical of Trump is a wild fantasy of victimhood that has no basis in reality.

horsemessiah··on Resignation Letter
This comment is not explemifying the problem, as you put it. It's pointing out the hypocrisy of this author for condemning something she engages in herself, without taking any blame.
horsemessiah··on Conservatives are flocking to the social media app Parler
Ah, good. More echo chambers.
horsemessiah··on New Facebook tool allows employers to suppress “unionize” in workplace chat
This is only true if they block all non-work discussions. Law explicitly allows union related discussion if other non-work related discussions are allowed.
horsemessiah··on We can no longer ignore the potential of psychedelic drugs to treat depression
Definitely possible, but not at all extremely likely.
horsemessiah··on US schools lay off hundreds of thousands
You wouldn't believe this if you didn't grow up in a stable home.
horsemessiah··on Ask HN: Software Unionization
Kickstarter recently voted for a union and was able to negotiate excellent terms for their layoffs.

Check out their website here: https://kickstarterunited.org/

On another note, unions are a wonderful idea for increasing worker power. I don't understand how people expect others to care about democracy, voting, etc. when we're stuck in a dictatorship 8 hours a day at work. Unions make the workplace more democratic, which will overall make people care more about democracy in general, IMO.

horsemessiah··on Ask HN: How can a programmer help with current events?
Police aren't really distinguishing between the two. Besides, even looters don't deserve to stay in jail if they can't afford bail - they'll still see their day in court.
horsemessiah··on The unluckiest generation in U.S. history
"Unluckiest" as though decades of neoliberal economics didn't directly bring this on us.
horsemessiah··on The FBI investigating hacking of Covid research by “PRC-affiliated cyber actors”
How can western leaders condemn China's lack of publishing info related to COVID-19 and protect private research for curing it at the same time? Research like this should be public and accessible to everyone. I don't know why I shouldn't applaud any hackers spreading this information.
horsemessiah··on Woman who designed Florida's Covid-19 dashboard removed from her position
Imagine how different the comments would be if this article were about China...
horsemessiah··on Pompeo tells China to stop stealing Covid-19 research
How can you steal research to stop a disease causing global catastrophe? There's no good reason this research shouldn't all be publicly accessible.

If China were withholding research, I would applaud anyone who stole it from them. I see no reason I shouldn't do the same for China here.
