Sorry, couldn't resist. :)
I'd proffer that it doesn't really matter what they're doing different from Tumblr; whatever they're doing is working and organically engaging a very large number of users. Try their service if you want to see what state-of-the-art social onboarding feels like circa 2012.
Really impressed otherwise.
IMO, with ajax page loads you need to show the user something that indicates their click was received. All browsers have a spinner or message somewhere to indicate "they're working" on pulling down the next page of content. If you take that visual clue away from users when loading content via ajax, what you'll end up with is frustrated users who click multiple times on the link since they think it's not working.
Whether the big obnoxious "loading" popup with ugly spinner is the right design choice is another matter, but fortunately the styling and location of that is easily changed.
This release of a management console for Route 53 has been a LONG time coming.
Not too much – it's just been a side project to explore what's possible with client-side photo editing and uploading.
If anyone has ideas they'd like to take offline, email bumblyapp at gmail.
None yet... I'll figure that out if enough people find it useful. Probably along the lines of selling virtual and physical merchandise with Bumblies on them. Physical postcards are a real possibility - I'll probably ask Brezina if he'll do a Sincerely deal with a web app. I'd like to avoid advertising and keep the site clean and fast.
Quickmeme has ridiculous traffic, and Memegenerator and Memebase aren't far behind. I wanted Bumbly to have a more sophisticated tone, and hopefully appeal to the female / BlueMountainArts / Pinterest crowd.
