I'm a serial tech entrepreneur. Have done a couple EIR stints at Sequoia and co-founded a YC company. Spent 9 years in the Valley and currently live in Austin, where I work from home on various projects.

Runs about 6-7 fps on my iPhone 5.

How about a Kickstarter for legal defense funds? Is there one out there?
hornbaker··on 40,000 NYU students realize they can 'reply all' to everyone
It'd be pretty awesome if this happened to the Facebook user list.
hornbaker··on Silicon Valley's dirty secret - age bias
A data point: according to my quick eyeball count, only around 25% of these founders are "young" - http://www.sequoiacap.com/us/early

[Disclaimer: I'm an EIR at Sequoia at the ripe old age of 46]

hornbaker··on HN saved us millions; we need to change our name
"Nameless"

Not kidding, I think that'd be a cool name.

hornbaker··on Building 'From Holden', an apparel manufacturer, from the ground up
Yep. Founders, to save yourself potential headaches in the future, do a USPTO trademark search before settling on a name:

Word Mark: HOLDEN

Goods and Services: IC 025. US 022 039. G & S: clothing, namely, jackets, sweaters, sweatshirts, pants, t-shirts, shirts, vests and outerwear, namely, snow pants, snow jackets, snow suits, insulated and thermal pants, jackets, and shirts; headgear, namely, hats, caps. FIRST USE: 20020000. FIRST USE IN COMMERCE: 20020000

Did you read the article?

"I first thought the calibration was off and tried selecting Jill Stein to actually highlight Obama. Nope. Jill Stein was selected just fine. Next I deselected her and started at the top of Romney’s name and started tapping very closely together to find the ‘active areas’. From the top of Romney’s button down to the bottom of the black checkbox beside Obama’s name was all active for Romney. From the bottom of that same checkbox to the bottom of the Obama button (basically a small white sliver) is what let me choose Obama. Stein’s button was fine. All other buttons worked fine."

hornbaker··on How Do You Raise a Prodigy?
Win (or lose, depending on your perspective) the genetic lottery.
hornbaker··on Gmail was down
I like it. It's not a new window, it just stays on top – making it better (for me) than either 1) saving as a draft, then looking through old mail to find content for the new message, then finding the draft and completing the message, or 2) opening the new message in a "real" new window which then needs attended to. Also like the recipients' pics, which makes it harder to send to an unintended recipient.
hornbaker··on Gmail was down
It's back up, and now I'm seeing the new message Compose window (yay). Sounds inconceivable, but perhaps the push required some kind of downtime?
hornbaker··on Google’s most advanced voice search has arrived on iOS
I tried the same test.

Google got the translation right first try, and the first result, which returned in less than a second, had "over $20 billion in damage" visible.

Siri took ~8 seconds to return "Ok sports fans, the Hurricanes appear to be in first place in the Southeast right now" followed by AHL team standings.

Apple has a lot of catching up to do here. They're going to have to start translating client-side, which Google has obviously figured out, and they're going to need a data source as rich as Google. It think the first part will get done at some point, but how will they match Google on the data side?

hornbaker··on A/B Testing Scale Cheat Sheet
Good article. This G-test calculator, also by Ben, is my favorite tool to pick a/b test winners: http://elem.com/~btilly/effective-ab-testing/g-test-calculat...
hornbaker··on Over a month later and Comcast still doesn't know how to SSL
Looks like their cert for https://www.comcast.com/ is fine, so this problem is only with the 'contracts' subdomain. I'm guessing that's a low traffic/priority section for them.

They should buy a wildcard cert for *.comcast.com and be done with it.

hornbaker··on Infinite Gangnam Style
Done with bigger squares and optimized for a tablet, this would be a compelling UI for a live DJ performance.
hornbaker··on Amazon EC2 currently down. Affecting Heroku, Reddit, Others
Update from http://status.aws.amazon.com/:

2:20 PM PDT We've now restored performance for about half of the volumes that experienced issues. Instances that were attached to these recovered volumes are recovering. We're continuing to work on restoring availability and performance for the volumes that are still degraded.

We also want to add some detail around what customers using ELB may have experienced. Customers with ELBs running in only the affected Availability Zone may be experiencing elevated error rates and customers may not be able to create new ELBs in the affected Availability Zone. For customers with multi-AZ ELBs, traffic was shifted away from the affected Availability Zone early in this event and they should not be seeing impact at this time.

hornbaker··on Amazon EC2 currently down. Affecting Heroku, Reddit, Others
They've acknowledged that at http://status.aws.amazon.com/ for awhile now with a tiny "i" status icon (I can't load my instances pane):

12:07 PM PDT We are experiencing elevated error rates with the EC2 Management Console.
