hornbaker··on What Every Founder Should Know When an Acquirer Comes Calling
Absolutely spot-on. ALWAYS assume it's going to fall through, and put your BUSINESS first, not the discussions. As long as you keep the business growing, the acquirer will not walk away (assuming they're serious in the first place).
hornbaker··on There is Little to No Relationship Between Financial Runway and Startup Success
It'd be helpful to see this study normalized for ROI over time, which is arguably a better measure of VC success than exit size.

Doing so might very well make Fred's contention hold up.

hornbaker··on How to Create 100,000 Parking Spots in San Francisco
HelloParking tried and folded, while ParkCirca is still going (http://www.parkcirca.com/) but has sparse listings. Tough space, apparently, or perhaps just still nascent due to lack of consumer mindshare.
hornbaker··on Apple's fingerprint scanner may be the biggest leap in payments since the C-Card
The prefix "epi" means above or on top. Perhaps you're thinking of "hypodermal," which means underneath the skin.

hornbaker··on Show HN: This page will disappear in 10,000 views
Why does the view count change wildly up and down as I refresh?

Otherwise, love it. Needs a favicon. Get ready for viral growth.

hornbaker··on LinkedIn Payola: Selling out employers and job hunters
What makes it inevitable is being a public company, or being on track to be a public company, with quarterly numbers to hit.
hornbaker··on Lifehacks from 100 Years Ago
I'm a DVM, and you're mistaken about antifreeze. It causes kidney failure over a period of several days, leading to a slow, agonizing death while toxins normally filtered out by the kidneys build up in the bloodstream. The dogs with antifreeze toxicity that I attempted to treat were quite obviously suffering.
hornbaker··on The Morality of Meditation
"The G-test statistic is 3.8189 so version 'Meditators' wins with 94.93% confidence." [1]

I'd have expected them to go for a higher level of statistical confidence.

hornbaker··on Google Correlate - Draw
My first try, with a hockey-stick growth pattern starting 2007. Expected a match with "twitter," instead got "baby poop."

hornbaker··on Show HN: Sieve - filter webpages and watch changes
Pretty slick. Could be the seed of a lightweight Browserling competitor, if you could scale it economically.
hornbaker··on The Wise Way to Crowdsource a Manhunt
Google will almost certainly add that functionality to Street View in the future. The coming ubiquity of always-on Glass-type cameras will turn a significant fraction of the public into walking surveillance cameras.
hornbaker··on Disney have stolen my artwork

hornbaker··on Robots.txt
An SEO consultant complaining about Google's frequent algo changes is like a mechanic complaining that cars break down too often.
hornbaker··on Svbtle Funding
It has an undo, but it could be more discoverable. Click and hold on the Kudos button for a couple of seconds, then release, and the count will go back down. Works on Chrome and iOS Safari for me.

Marissa is "pushing for it"?

If she wanted it done, it'd already be done.

hornbaker··on Dharmesh Shah pays out $3,001 for Twitter contest hack
It's a good thing none of the students went crazy on Fiverr, or Dharmesh would have been out of a lot more money.
hornbaker··on Google Car Search
Looks a little half-baked – only 3 BMW M3s near Silicon Valley, and no Porsches? Otherwise, the interface looks nice, and I hope they crawl more inventory, including pre-owned.

It reminds me of the ill-fated Google Real Estate search (http://google-latlong.blogspot.com/2011/01/retiring-real-est...). That said, Google was going up against strong competitors in Trulia and Zillow at the time, and there doesn't seem to be a strong competitor in the car search space.

hornbaker··on How I got a YC interview as a single founder and blew it at the final hurdle
From Reuters: Zap.Com Corporation, incorporated in 1999, is a shell company. The Company was established for the purpose of creating and operating a global network of independently owned Web sites. Harbinger Group Inc., the Company's principal stockholder owns approximately 98% of its outstanding common stock. As of December 31, 2011, the Company has no business operations. During the year ended December 31, 2011, the Company had no revenue.

"So you're telling me there's a chance." - Lloyd

Zap is a great name. But there's no harm in starting with PayWithZap.com, like you're currently doing, then acquiring zap.com down the road when you have real capital or revenue. Owning zap.com now is a premature optimization, a nice-to-have.
