hopw_roewur_ne··on The Lost Treasure of Sid Meier's Pirates
Hanse: Die Expedition (1994) - https://www.mobygames.com/game/9273/hanse-die-expedition/

There's also the Patrician series (Patrician 1, 1992, Patrician III 2002) I think you may be referring to: https://www.mobygames.com/game/15367/patrician-iii/

Patrician III starts out as a manual trading game, sailing your trading cogs up and down the Baltic, but then to expand you build industries, and supply goods so the population can expand and create and consume more of your goods, automate trading routes, you can become mayor of your home town, defend it against sieges, and it to a large extent turns into a city builder.

You can also send ships to explore and find trade routes to the Mediterranean, and IIRC you can occasionally accidentally discover America.

Very cool game.

Mosh on server and client keeps the SSH connection going during suspension or network drops, etc.

hopw_roewur_ne··on Microsoft doubles down on small modular reactors and fusion energy
I don't think it's a huge success, considering they're unable to meet their own demands for electricity, instead driving up energy prices in neighboring countries as well.
hopw_roewur_ne··on The Reign of Alexander III of Macedon
I tried reading Devereux's blog posts on Sparta but bounced off of them. Watching this I remember why. He's punching so hard against a popular image of Sparta as invincible warriors that he sometimes starts painting his own opposite-world parody of Sparta.

For example: After 19:40, not finding it enough to say that Thermopylae was maybe a one-off and that there are multiple examples of Sparta surrendering instead of fighting to the last man, he has to exaggerate:

> Spartans surrender all the time.

Still an informative interview, though.

Fallout 1 used GURPS in development, but Interplay lost the rights and they made their own system.

hopw_roewur_ne··on KOReader Document Viewer for E Ink devices
KOReader is nice. There's also Plato[0] for Kobo, which unlike the Kobo Libra 2 stock reader and KOReader didn't choke on an .epub with the entire Bible in one xhtml file.

hopw_roewur_ne··on I taught the Iliad to Chinese teenagers (2021)
There are some tricks like stock phrases that often take up half a line, but rhyme is not among them. Epic poetry wasn't written to rhyme.

Yes, the page is rendered remotely in Firefox and turned into text transmitted over SSH.
hopw_roewur_ne··on "LibreOffice is better at reading old Word files than Word"
Formatting for docx files isn't the same between modern desktop Word, and the online version either, I've had trouble with tables for example.

This high end system draws ~35W idle: Intel Core i9-10900K @ 5,0 GHz, AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT (16 GB), Asus ROG Maximus XII Hero Wi-Fi, 2× 16 GB G Skill Trident Z Royal 3 600 MHz 16-16-16-36, Samsung 970 Evo M.2 1 TB, Samsung 860 Evo 1 TB, Seasonic Prime Ultra Titanium, 1 000 W.

hopw_roewur_ne··on Five lines I put in a blank .vimrc
I tried that, but found it annoying to occasionally get kicked out of insert mode while writing. I ended up rebinding Caps Lock to Escape instead, with Shift+CL to toggle caps; I quite like this rebinding even outside Vim. Two lines in autohotkey on Windows, or setxkbmap in X11.

I didn't know the Spectator was running for office; I guess these companies didn't donate to the campaign.
hopw_roewur_ne··on Modern mathematics emerged from “The House of Wisdom” in the 13th century
I mean, sure. But there seems to be this weird underlying idea that the world owes Islam a debt of gratitude for conquering the region where these texts existed and had been successfully transcribed and preserved under Christian rule for hundreds of years already, as if they swooped in at just the right moment to save them from being swallowed by the desert.

Tmux allows you to set up several windows and programs in a session (or multiple tmux sessions at once, like virtual desktops), detach from tmux, disconnect SSH, and when you SSH back in a week later, just "tmux attach" to get back to where you were. Also works if your connection drops in the middle of something.

> Weight lifting is generally about isolating the muscles

Bodybuilding often involves a high degree of isolation exercises for fatigue management and for building specific muscles. But good luck deadlifting, squatting, pressing, snatching or clean&jerking etc without "integrating" muscles, or without good balance.

hopw_roewur_ne··on I don’t understand Graph Theory
It took a bit of work to understand what was going on here though: "From this proposition it will follow, when arithmetical addition has been defined, that 1 + 1 = 2." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Principia_Mathematica#/media/F...
hopw_roewur_ne··on New ethics courses in computer science
Soon after birth? Partly, but this is a much deeper issue that starts soon after conception. Actually scratch that, it started soon after sexual reproduction and therefore sexual selection was introduced about a billion years ago.
