honkycat··on Ford kills the All-Electric F-150
Hicks with overpriced trucks don't want EVs, shocker!

They are a status symbol for middle class workers with no taste

honkycat··on Why Twilio Segment moved from microservices back to a monolith
I don't care how it is done just dont rely on your database schema for data modeling and business logic
honkycat··on Fighting the age-gated internet
"Age Gated"?? minnesota and wisconsin are trying to ban VPNs!
honkycat··on Instagram chief orders staff back to the office five days a week in 2026
I would honestly not mind 2-3 days a week but PDX is dead for tech jobs, and the pay is trash.

Can't wait to have to move to SF and pay 5k for a shoebox so I can work in an overcrowded office in a boring, crappy part of town.

honkycat··on Instagram chief orders staff back to the office five days a week in 2026
This isn't a conspiracy theory it is just a fact. They already invested in the offices and the people who own everything have a lot of money in commercial real estate.
honkycat··on Is America's jobs market nearing a cliff?
Yea! Start over my career, work way longer and harder hours, and make 1/3 of what I currently do! Sounds great!
honkycat··on You want microservices, but do you need them?
The one thing I would like to preserve from microservices is stuff about database table hygiene.

Large, shared database tables have been a huge issue in the last few jobs that I have had, and they are incredibly labor intensive to fix.

honkycat··on Iowa City made its buses free. Traffic cleared, and so did the air
Meanwhile PDX is letting homeless people ride certain bus rides for free.

It is a fucking nightmare. I'm a liberal guy but the amount of bums make the transit here unusable.

honkycat··on Helm 4.0
Helm sucks.

Helm, and a lot of devops tooling, is fundamentally broken.

The core problem is that it is a templating language and not a fully functional programming language, or at least a DSL.

This leads us to the mess we are in today. Here is a fun experiment: Go open 10 helm charts, and compare the differences between them. You will find they have the same copy-paste bullshit everywhere.

Helm simply does not provide powerful enough tools to develop proper abstractions. This leads to massive sprawl when defining our infrastructure. This leads to the DevOps nightmare we have all found ourselves in.

I have developed complex systems in Pulumi and other CDKs: 99% of the text just GOES AWAY and everything is way more legible.

You are not going to create a robust solution with a weak templating language. You are just going to create more and more sprawl.

Maybe the answer is a CDK that outputs helm charts.

honkycat··on Helm 4.0
What is Charts v3? Please tell me it is LUA support.
honkycat··on Helm 4.0
Yes, this is the key. Helm charts should basically be manifests with some light customization.

Helm is not good enough to develop abstractions with. So go the opposite way: keep it stupid simple.

Pairing helm with Kustomize can help a lot as well. You do most of the templating in the helm chart but you have an escape hatch if you need more patches.

honkycat··on US High school students' scores fall in reading and math
Gotta say it: School was easier back then, the US was less populated. There was way more opportunity. Kids these days are treated like slaves stuck in child-jail.

I don't need to go into the traditional whining, I'm sure you are aware of the changes of the structure of America.

It's not about personal responsibility. There is a reason rich kids do better than poor kids.

The thing nobody wants to say out loud: America's demographics are changing, they are aging. We are producing less wealth. Our country has less potential.

The wealthy members of the past generation have failed to invest in the American project so we are left with a weak, crumbling economy that doesn't have any industry or useful skills to export.

We, as a country, as WEAKER and POORER than EVER.

honkycat··on US High school students' scores fall in reading and math
I mean, is it any question it's about money? And I don't mean money spent on education.

People are too poor and harried to care anymore.

When I was growing up, you could strive for a white collar job and get one, and we assumed it would lead to a decent life.

Now, what are kids supposed to look forward to? Tech is in the toilet, everything is going overseas, everyone is broke.

So many of my friends are unemployed, LinkedIn is filled with people desperately posting looking for jobs. Of COURSE this is going to affect early education as well.

honkycat··on Scientists may have found a way to eliminate chromosome linked to Down syndrome
Even if it allows them to function in society, they have significantly higher poverty rates.

It is a hard life for everyone involved.

honkycat··on AMD CEO sees chips from TSMC's US plant costing 5%-20% more
Yep, bingo.

They don't want to be competitive they want to bleed the company dry.

honkycat··on AMD CEO sees chips from TSMC's US plant costing 5%-20% more
Intel needs to course correct.

I live in the area and know a LOT of intel fab workers.

The issue is not the workers: Intel has been captured by corporate raiders and toxic management.

They aren't interested in making chips or an innovative company. They just want to squeeze the juice out of the company until it is dry.

That is why it is so bad.

honkycat··on Yoni Appelbaum on the real villians behind our housing and mobility problems
i always drag this one out: For a lot of modern history, public hangings were a family affair. Pack up a picnic and go downtown to watch a man hang.
honkycat··on Yoni Appelbaum on the real villians behind our housing and mobility problems
I grew up in the 90s and I agree: I shared a room with my older brother until high school.

We shared EVERYTHING. And strangely, it didn't kill us! In fact: it just motivated us to go to sports and clubs and stay out of the house.

Obviously less extreme, but I do not understand this "every child must have their own room" thing. They don't! And I grew up in an incredibly poor rural area, imagine living in a city where there was actual shit to do.

honkycat··on What a Hacker Stole from Me
A bored teenager doesn't care.

There are people in the world who are profoundly nihilistic [0]. They will do mean shit for no reasons, and move on without caring.

This has always been true throughout human history.

"Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do"

honkycat··on Entry-level jobs down by a third since launch of ChatGPT
You're right, things are great in the US market. Totally different.

These are all multi-national corps.

honkycat··on Entry-level jobs down by a third since launch of ChatGPT
> Voters and lobbyists are the same thing

one is a large corporation with money paying for access and favors, the other is a regular person who votes. Absolutely absurd.

honkycat··on Entry-level jobs down by a third since launch of ChatGPT
It's not AI. We are in a recession caused by fear and instability.

Tech may just be dying in general.

This could finally be the collapse we have been waiting for.

While the US was allowing capitalists to hoard all of the USs excess capital, China was facilitating the development of important industries via central planning.

Look at Intel. The owning class has become so greedy and incompetent. They aren't even running functional companies anymore: just grifting for government money then using that for stock buybacks.

honkycat··on Why I wrote the BEAM book
everyone is trying to hire the best, but caters to the lowest common denominator.

"But what if we hire an engineer to stupid to learn a new language in a few weeks???" and on and on and on

honkycat··on (On | No) Syntactic Support for Error Handling

honkycat··on Mario Kart designers had to rethink everything to make it open world
The Forza Horizon series are open world car games, and they are very fun and effective.
honkycat··on Show HN: I wrote a modern Command Line Handbook
Cryptic, overly complicated syntax. for loops, if statements, etc.. are all done better in other languages.

No package manager, build, or dependency features. This means it is ugly and gross to import functions from other programming languages.

Zero data structure support, so any data manipulation is horrible.

No test support, so you can't mock and test business logic.

No debugger support.

It's just a bad, cryptic, confusing language that is hard to maintain.

Remember: it's not that you CAN'T do these things, it's that they work better in other languages, like Node or Python. And shelling out in Python or node works great and is very easy. And Python comes built into most systems these days.

It is hard to justify writing shell scrips anymore. It's like writing perl or cobol. We have better tools now, the world has moved on.
