homerowilson··on Tensorflow sucks
This is a good observation! Tensorflow is a practical and flexible dataflow implementation. See for instance Greta, https://github.com/gavinsimpson/greta -- a framework for Bayesian stats built on tensorflow.
homerowilson··on Disabling Intel ME 11 via undocumented mode
Great new marketing phrase tho: MINIX Inside!

homerowilson··on The Idea of Lisp
As mentioned in this list, Ihaka and Gentleman's R implementation of S begain like this but quickly grew into a larger system. R's source code today is still full of lispisms.

They are plain text, you can easily diff and version control them.

homerowilson··on Good affordable laptops I can run linux on without compatibility problems?
I bought a Toshiba CB35-B3340 13.3 Inch Chromebook/4GB RAM for $269. It has a really nice 1920 x 1080 display.

Then I installed the SeaBIOS firmware from John Lewis, https://johnlewis.ie/custom-chromebook-firmware/rom-download...

Then I installed Ubuntu 15.04.

Everything works great, including the HDMI adapter, wifi, sound, webcam, USB, etc. Accelerated OpenGL and WebGL works, although the performance isn't going to win any speed contests.

The thing only has 16GB flash storage, which is a little small so I added a 64GB compact flash card for more storage. Otherwise it's a great cheap Linux box.

homerowilson··on The Fed caused 93% of the entire stock market's move since 2008
I think you're right to be a bit suspicious. The quote "This isn’t just a spurious correlation" appears in the article followed by..."regression analysis" with a link to an analysis that is, unfortunately, not immune to spurious results.

Engle and Granger came up with a stronger measure of time series association called "cointegration" that would be more appropriate to use here than regression. Including such an analysis would strengthen the article.

homerowilson··on Marine Corps Shelves Futuristic Robo-Mule Due to Noise Concerns
There are these things called "mules." They're quiet, can carry about 200lbs., and can refuel themselves as they go by eating grass and drinking water...
homerowilson··on Train vs. Airplane Energy Efficiency (2010)
These numbers are pretty different than the ones here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuel_efficiency_in_transportat...

Passenger trains are more efficient than planes, even when low capacity is assumed.

What surprised me is how efficient air travel has become, it really is quite impressive.

homerowilson··on Introducing DataFrames in Spark for Large Scale Data Science
A replica of this benchmark on my laptop running R has this running in about 1/4 second. Seems like a pretty trivial benchmark?

library(data.table)

x = data.table(a=sample(10,10e6,replace=TRUE),num=sample(100,10e6,replace=TRUE)) t1=proc.time(); x[,sum(num),by=a]; print(proc.time()-t1)

   user system elapsed
  0.209 0.032 0.245
homerowilson··on Defending GCC considered futile
Not only does gcc often produce faster running programs as referenced in the post, it has mature OpenMP support (although llvm/clang is moving pretty fast on OMP development), and has a Fortan compiler. These are important for numerical computing.
homerowilson··on Struggle at the heart of the Apple supply chain
It's worth noting that Corning is a successful American manufacturer!
homerowilson··on The per capita rate of innovation (2004)
Yeah. Got to love that 10th order polynomial fit...
homerowilson··on Surface Pro 3 Review
I was jhust on an airplane trip and watced with some amusement my aisle-mate fumbling with a new surface pro.

When first using it on his lap, the screen kept flopping around as the kickstand slid off his legs--he eventually used the back of the seat in front of him to prop it up a bit.

Then when the tray came down, he clearly could not get a comfortable typing angle.

At some point, he dispensed with the keyboad and used it as a tablet with the kickstand on the tray, and that looked like a pretty good set up.

I asked him if he liked it near the end of the flight, and alas he said he plans to dispense with tablets all together and go back to laptops.

homerowilson··on Tesla Motors by the numbers
I agree strongly with ebbv and further take issue with a point in the article:

"Taxpayers pay first so Tesla can build the cars and again to help the wealthy buy them."

It turns out that anyone subject to AMT (my guess is a substantial portion of Tesla buyers) does not in fact qualify for the federal tax credit.

homerowilson··on Postgres on the GPU
Nvidia uses ECC RAM on their GPU compute cards, an important consideration for serious HPC computing.
homerowilson··on Microsoft Introduces New "Surface" Tablet
I am writing this from a Transformer Prime, which has totally replaced my laptop. But I have to augment the Android OS with Debian to make the machine useful to me (which I run in a chroot jail).

I agree that Windows in such a form factor could be quite compelling to lots of users.

I think the Asus Transformer has a better form factor though since it does not need a desk to support the screen/keyboard--you can use it on your lap like a laptop.

homerowilson··on Notes from a failed attempt to port LaTeX to iOS
I use LaTeX on my Asus transformer primer in a Debian Squeeze chroot. It runs quite fast and works well.
homerowilson··on Sending holiday cards, but I don't have addresses, so I made SendSpree
I traveled around the country once for a long while without an address. Friends sent me letters and parcels using general delivery at post offices. It worked quite well!
